Walkthrough:Pokémon Scarlet and Violet/Part 14
Next stop Medali
Our next stop is the Medali Gym, and while the town looks close to Cascarrafa, without the ability to climb it is easier to get there from Zapapico (West). Leaving Zapapico via this exit, and taking the fork to the right, will lead us on the path straight to Medali with a fly point we can unlock on the way. One thing to note is that the Pokémon here can be slightly higher level than what we’ve faced so far, coming in around the mid-30s. This is also the level of our Gym Leader Larry, so you’ll need to make sure your team is ready to take them on. Once you leave the tunnel head down the hill to enter Medali for the first time.
Much to do in Medali
Medali has a lot of shops, but the most important one is Treasure Eatery. This is not only where you’ll face the next Gym Leader, but also where you go if you want to change your Pokémon’s Tera type. Be warned you’ll need 50 Tera Shards of the type you want to change to. You probably won’t have this many at this point unless you’ve been participating in a lot of Tera Raid Battles.
Here is the list of shops in Medali:
- Artisan Bakery – Sandwich ingredients and picks
- Chic Kebab – Food cart
- Deli Cioso – Sandwich ingredients
- Every Wich Way – Restaurant
- Gastronomie en Famille – Restaurant
- Go-For-Broke Grill x2 – Restaurant
- Jade Palace Garden – Restaurant
- Kanto Crepes – Food cart
- Seabreeze Café x3 – Restaurant
- Seafood Fresco – Restaurant
- Smoochurro – Food cart
- Sugar-N-Ice x3 – Food cart
- Sushi High Roller – Flower, Bird, Wind and Moon Four-piece sushi set, and Miso Soup
- Sure Cans – Sandwich ingredients
Larry’s favorite food
To begin the Medali Gym Test you’ll first have to enter the Gym. Once you do so Nemona will challenge you to another battle. However, you won’t fight her until after you have taken down Larry, so you don’t have to worry about her yet. When signing up to the Gym Test you are asked to find four clues as to Larry’s favorite food, and tell the code word to the wait staff at the Treasure Eatery.
You can find these by battling trainers around town. They will then give you a location where you can find the clue. You can skip all of this by going straight to the waiter if you know the order, but you will miss out on the money and experience. There is one trainer in front of the restaurant, one in front of Sure Cans, and one in front of the amphitheater. You will notice them as their speech bubbles are outlined in yellow.
One will tell you that they want some ice cream, leading you to Sugar-N-Ice near the Treasure Eatery where the odd food out is Grilled Rice Balls. The next will say to listen to the blue bird Pokémon, meaning the Squawkabilly that tells you “Medium”. The next will tell you to look for a dark spot surrounded by stairs, and you can find the words Fire Blast hidden behind the grate. Finally, ask the man eating at the counter, and he will tell you that regulars season their food with “Lemon”. All that’s left is to approach the waiter and ask for Grilled rice balls, Medium serving, Extra crispy Fire Blast style, and Lemon. You can then talk to the waiter again to challenge Larry.
Facing the Exceptional Everyman
Larry’s team isn’t too intimidating, except Staraptor which has Intimidate and can lower your Attack. Fighting-types are best here, and you’ll want to watch out for status moves like Yawn and Glare. Komala’s Comatose, and Staraptor’s Facade also mean that you don’t want to status Larry’s team back. Once you are done, you’ll grab a picture with Larry, and be given TM025 Facade, a strong Normal-type move that doubles in power when you are statused. Pokémon caught below level 45 will now always obey.
Facing Nemona
After you’ve finished against Larry, Geeta will approach. Nemona tells you a bit more about her, and how Geeta’s the Top Champion. Geeta says she’s here to scope out top talent, and Nemona will give you that battle she promised. Don’t worry, Geeta will heal your team before the battle starts. Nemona’s team is the same no matter her first partner Pokémon, except for that Pokémon. She will always Terastylize this Pokémon, but like our other fights with Nemona, it doesn’t matter if you win or lose.
Once you’re finished Geeta will give you a few TM171s. This is Tera Blast, a move that takes on a Pokémon’s Tera type when it’s Terstylized. It also adapts to your highest offensive stat, so it’s a great move to give your Pokémon more type coverage, particularly given that we’ve just unlocked the Treasure Eatery. If you don’t Terastylize then it is a fairly powerful Normal-type special move. After this Geeta will return you to Larry’s Gym and you are free to take on the next challenge.
