Walkthrough:Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky/Chapter 27
After the incident in Treasure Town, Cresselia will tell you she will hunt down Darkrai with you. So, she'll be near your bluff, and will tell you to go and get ready quickly. Once you are ready, she will lead you to Dark Crater!
While not necessary, if you were lucky enough (and or prepared in time) to get the Lunar Veil from Spacial Rift, it will make Dark Crater somewhat easier, as it causes Cresselia's stat-boosting moves to apply team-wide, a fantastic effect. Additionally, while Dark Crater itself can have Reviver Seeds, it will help to stock up on some beforehand. It's the final fight; better use them now than never!
At the Dark Crater's Entrance
It appears to be a volcanic cavern, with the entrance being all gray and fire burning inside the holes. Your partner thinks about this for a moment, then decides that you really are about to face Darkrai. Cresselia mentions there's no telling what Darkrai has in store for the three of you. You must proceed with utmost caution! Like with Spacial Rift, you cannot recruit anything here on the first way through, so simply seek stairs.
As the entrance suggests, this place is full of Fire-types. In fact, this is the only story related dungeon to contain lava tiles, with all other ones being completely optional, which means Fire-types have extra tiles to walk on. The dungeon is 30 floors long with a second section after 15 floors, making it longer than pretty much any other story dungeon (outside of Sky Peak, which was divided into ten short sections), although there are optional dungeons that are much longer. Due to the prevailing type, a Grass-type will struggle here a bit, while Water-types should be feeling fine.
Do keep an eye on Cresselia, as she infamously can get lost and run into a fight beyond her capabilities. All the basic stages here are very low level, so you should easily knock them out, but there are still other threats:
- Hippowdon: One of the few non-Fire types in this dungeon, it will cause annoying sandstorms that basically prevent you from naturally healing. It also has some other attacks, but only Sand-Attack and Yawn are going to cause trouble, since it's still quite below the level curve.
- Charmeleon/Charizard: Charmeleon has less moves in its moveset, so it's more likely to roll something like SmokeScreen, Scary Face, or Flamethrower. Charizard is thankfully still not high level enough for Heat Wave.
- Monferno/Infernape: Can have Taunt or Torment, Fury Swipes, Mach Punch and even Close Combat for sheer damage.
- Combusken/Blaziken: Focus Energy, Sand-Attack, Double Kick, and the very annoying Mirror Move. Combusken's only other STAB move is the basic Ember, but Blaziken has the often-critical Blaze Kick.
- Flareon: Helping Hand to boost others, as well as the annoying Sand-Attack, Bite and Fire Fang.
- Numel/Camerupt: Numel will always have Magnitude, which just completely ignores damage calculation, so it's still a bit of threat. Camerupt can also have Earthquake, Earth Power, Lava Plume or Focus Energy, making it a big threat. Thankfully Cresselia does not care about Magnitude or the like, due to her Levitate Ability, but you and your partner still need to watch out.
- Rapidash: Can have multihit Fury Attack and Agility to speed up its allies, as well as Stomp (and Bounce). It has a bunch of Fire-type moves in its moveset, but nothing ranged.
- Arcanine: As a stone Evolution, it only has those six moves to choose from: Thunder Fang, Bite, Roar, Odor Sleuth, Fire Fang and ExtremeSpeed. The fangs and Bite can be annoying with cringing, and ExtremeSpeed has reach of 2 tiles, but that's about it, and it's predictable.
- Quilava/Typhlosion: Can have Lava Plume or Flamethrower, as well as SmokeScreen and multihitting Rollout.
- Magcargo: Can have AncientPower and Flamethrower, among other STAB moves.
- Rhyperior: Has Lightning Rod, hindering Pikachu and Shinx if you have them, as well as any other case of Electric moves. Can have multihit in Fury Attack or STAB Rock Blast, as well as OHKO Horn Drill, Earthquake, Stomp, or Scary Face. Thankfully it only starts showing up towards the end.
- Magmortar: Can have Confuse Ray, SmokeScreen, Lava Plume, Faint Attack, Flamethrower, or even Sunny Day, boosting all other Fire types' moves even further, and weakening your Water moves, making it a possible big threat.
- Torkoal: Can have SmokeScreen, Lava Plume, Protect or Flamethrower; thankfully it just barely misses out on Heat Wave level-wise.
- Mismagius: Another case of stone Evolution moveset: Lucky Chant, Magical Leaf, Growl, Psywave, Spite, and Astonish. Spite will burn through your PP, Psywave ignores typical damage calculation and Astonish can cause you to cringe (on top of being STAB).
- Aggron: Can have Metal Sound, Protect, Iron Head, Headbutt or Mud-Slap, among other moves. It also has Rock Head to take advantage of Take Down.

The Final Showdown
On floor 30 is the Dark Crater's end, where you can find Darkrai.
As he appears in front of you, your partner wonders as to what's his deal is. Why does he even care about you two? He then reveals that he knows of your time accident with Grovyle, and what it did to both of you! He then asks you, wasn't the whole thing very weird? That it happened just at that time you were travelling?
Turns out, that was caused by none other than Darkrai himself, as part of his nefarious plan. He wishes to engulf the planet in darkness, as was true in the future you visited. He sabotaged the Temporal Tower and then your trip to the past once he learned of it, in hopes that it would be enough to cause the planet's demise. Turns out that you managed to shield Grovyle from Darkrai's attack, causing your transformation! Your willpower seemingly messed with the whole thing and you became a
However, Darkrai underestimated your resourcefulness. You managed to meet up with your partner, which caused a butterfly effect of all the events leading to you discovering the truth behind everything, with partner's Relic Fragment leading you safely to Temporal Tower with the Time Gears collected by Grovyle. This is why this time he decided to intervene personally and simply get rid of you, going as far as spreading rumors that you're the cause of the space distortion, which on top of making you mentally discourage, would also very obviously anger Palkia if you somehow persisted regardless. Even this whole trip here was part of his plan!
But what's that? Darkrai thinks that just getting rid of you would be a waste, given how resourceful and strong you have shown to be ? He wants you and your partner to join him as his co-rulers, which Cresselia warns you is just a lie. However, your partner seems to be of other opinion, saying it is pointless to resist Darkrai, for he is too strong, as they walk over to your said. Darkrai then suggests you follow the suit, upon which you three will start with getting rid of Cresselia for good. Your partner pleads, knowing Darkrai won't be satisfied with just one of you. As you walk, Darkrai tries to sweet talk you even more, and then...
...Wait. No! This is just all a nightmare conjured by Darkrai himself! Your partner would never give up that easily! You give Darkrai a good ol' whack right in the body. Cresselia and your partner are relieved, as you resolve that you will never ever abandon this world, no matter what it takes.
Dissapointed that you refused his offer, Darkrai reveals his Plan C: an ambush! He had his henchmen hiding out here, so you're now at a quite number disadvantage. The true final fight starts! For the future of the planet!
All bosses are guaranteed to know one move listed below. Their other three known moves will vary between the following:
Darkrai: Disable, Ominous Wind, Quick Attack, Hypnosis, Faint Attack and Nightmare.
Arbok: Bite, Poison Sting, Leer, Wrap, Thunder Fang, Ice Fang, Fire Fang, Glare, Screech, Acid, Crunch, Stockpile, Swallow and Spit Up.
Magcargo: Yawn, Rock Throw, Smog, Ember, Harden, Recover and AncientPower.
Aggron: Harden, Headbutt, Tackle, Mud-Slap, Metal Claw, Iron Defense, Roar, Take Down and Iron Head.
Mismagius: Psywave, Growl, Magical Leaf, Lucky Chant and Spite.
Rhyperior: Horn Attack, Stomp, Fury Attack, Poison Jab, Tail Whip, Scary Face and Rock Blast.
Magmortar: SmokeScreen, ThunderPunch, Smog, Leer, Ember, Faint Attack, Fire Spin and Confuse Ray.
This is a pretty tough fight, as fitting for the true final showdown of the game's story. First off, all of Darkrai's henchmen are enemies that you have fought to get here. While they are much lower-levelled than the main enemies, they make up for basically being a mini Monster House, and having even more IQ than regular enemies (everyone here has 600, whereas enemies in dungeon have either 150 or 331 depending on dungeon part). The arena is also an open one, so you can't just retreat to a hallway to bait them out.
Darkrai is the main guy here, with a titanic 800 hit points. He always has Double Team, and he will remind you as to why the developers replaced its TM for a Wonder Orb; if he gets any off, hitting him will be painful. None of the other possible moves are a pushover either; Disable can paralyze you, Ominous Wind is a room-wide move with possible chance for omniboost, Quick Attack isn't quite as dangerous but it still has range, Hypnosis puts you to sleep (which synergizes with his Bad Dreams Ability), Faint Attack is a STAB move that never moves, and Nightmare is basically worse Hypnosis (as the target doesn't have to be already sleeping, unlike in main games). He's in the same IQ group as Dialga, so that grants him some annoying IQ skills: Nontraitor to make him never hit his allies in confusion (except with possibly Ominous Wind), Self-Curer so that he recovers from status faster, Practice Swinger raising his attacking stats after a missed attack, Aggressor making hit harder but also making hit take more damage, Sharpshooter boosting his critical hit chance, Quick Dodger meaning that he's more likely to just oddge an attack, and Intimidator with the dreaded 1/3 chance to just negate an attack performed next to him.
Arbok has Mud Bomb, which might lower your accuracy on a hit. It has bunch of other annoying moves; Bite and the elemental fangs can cause cringing or status, Poison Sting is STAB and can poison you, Glare paralyzes you, while Screech massively tanks your Defense stat. Shed Skin also means it will recover faster from statua as well, while Intimidate (not to be confused with the Intimidator IQ skill) Ability causes any adjacentphysical attacks to be weakened. Its IQ skills include: Nontraitor, Type-Advantage Master increasing critical chance on supereffective moves (and it has a bunch of various types to take advantage of it), Nonsleeper making it immune to sleep, Concentrator raising its Accuracy but lowering its Evasion, Practice Swinger, Aggressor, Counter Basher which furthers lowers its Defense but gives it a chance to counter adjacent attacks, Erratic Player making type matchups more extreme while attacking and defending (0.25/0.5/1/1.7x instead of 0.5/0.7/1/1.4x), Clutch Performer raising its evasion when it's low on health, and of course another case of Intimidator.
Magcargo has Amnesia, raising its Special Defense. Other annoying moves include Yawn, as it will put you to sleep, AncientPower due to the omniboost chance, as well as Smog and Ember due to status infliction, which is not exactly good in this type of boss fight. Flame Body also gives it a random chance to burn attackers when adjacent. Its IQ skills include: Cheerleader, boosting attacking stats of adjacent allies, Bodyguard to take hits for allies at critical health, Wise Healer to possibly heal more with Recover, Wary Fighter to step back after a miss, Defender which raises its Defense but lowers Attack, Counter Hitter which makes it sometimes counter adjacent attacks for 25% damage (without lowering its Defense) and yet another case of Intimidator.
Aggron always has Protect; remember that items like Sticks or Geo Pebble go through it! Its other annoying moves include Roar (to push one of you away), Headbutt and Iron Head to cause cringing, and Mud-Slap to lower your accuracy. It also won't take recoil damage from Take Down if it does have it, due to its Rock Head. Aggron is in the same IQ group as Magcargo.
Mismagius always has Astonish, a STAB move that can cause cringing. Other moves include the dangerous Psywave, Lucky Chant to protect its allies from crits, Spite to burn through your PP, Growl to lower your Attack, and Magical Leaf which never misses. It has Levitate for its Ability, so it can't be hit with Dig if you're using it. It has Nontraitor, Self-curer, Hit-and-Runner which nullifies counterattacks sometimes, Erratic Player and Critical Dodger which makes it never get hit critically. Notably, this makes Mismagius the only enemy here that does not have Intimidator!
Rhyperior always has Take Down, although since it has Solid Rock instead of Rock Head like Rhyhorn and Rhydon, it will take recoil damage from it. Its other annoying moves include multihit Fury Attack and STAB Rock Blast, Stomp to make you cringe and Scary Face to slow you down. Solid Rock makes it take less damage from supereffective moves, but Lightning Rod is the big thing. If you have Shinx or Pikachu, it will effectively neutralize their biggest advantage in Discharge, as Rhyperior will redirect all your Electric moves until it is knocked out. It has the same IQ skills as Magcargo.
Last but not least is Magmortar. It is the only other enemy here other than Mismagius to have guaranteed STAB in Fire Punch. It can have Confuse Ray to confuse you, SmokeScreen to blind, ThunderPunch to paralyze you, Smog to poison you, or Faint Attack which never misses, among other things. Like Magcargo, it has Flame Body. It also has the same IQ skills as Arbok.
This fight can go either way depending on your preparation and/or luck, so don't give up! Push onwards to the victory, it is the final fight!
To Live In This World
After the big fight, Darkrai reveals Plan D: escape using a Dimensional Hole. He admits that even he himself has no idea where or even when it leads, but anything is better than his current situation! He will simply restart his plan in another time and another place. You try to run after him, but he manages to get just next to the portal, gloating about how you'll never catch him.
...But that ends up being his undoing, as Palkia arrives just in the nick of time. PALKIA WILL HAVE NONE OF DARKRAI'S FOOLISHNESS. HE COMES HERE TO GET RID OF THIS VILLAIN ONCE AND FOR ALL. THERE'S NO ESCAPING PALKIA'S JUDGMENT HERE!
Just as Darkrai enters the Dimensional Hole, Palkia's attack strikes it, causing the portal to shatter with Darkrai still inside. Hearing Darkrai's scream, your partner asks whether Darkrai is gone for good. Palkia answers that no, he simply was wounded heavily and landed in some unknown place, which worries your partner; wouldn't Darkrai just start his plan anew after recovering? However, Cresselia points out the similarities in what happened to you and Darkrai, and that most likely Darkrai will now just wander aimlessly around the world, not knowing any better about who he used to be. Palkia leaves, saying that all that had to be done here has been done.
As you return to Treasure Town where everyone is awaiting you, your partner remarks how Darkrai had both of you fooled, that neither of you belonged in this world. But the sight of everyone cheering for their success made them realize how wonderful it's to be alive, and how things ended well, even for the little Azurill. That everyone in this world has a reason to exist, even the nefarious Darkrai.
Although you have managed to defeat the true mastermind behind the planet's paralysis, there are still things left. There are still tougher, meaner dungeons to conquer in this game!
