The Attack stat (Japanese: 攻撃能力attack ability, symbol A), or informally Physical Attack, partly determines how much damage a Pokémon deals when using a physical move.
In the core series
Each Pokémon's Attack stat is used to determine how much damage a Pokémon deals when using a physical move. For more information on how Attack affects damage, see Damage → Damage calculation.
Before Generation IV, all damaging moves of the following types are physical moves, and therefore only scale with the Attack stat:

The user attacks the target by showering it with water that’s so cold it saps the target’s power. This also lowers the target’s Attack stat.

When an attack causes its HP to drop to half or less, the Pokémon gets angry. This lowers its Defense and Sp. Def stats but boosts its Attack, Sp. Atk, and Speed stats.
Turns the sunlight harsh when the Pokémon enters a battle. The ancient pulse thrumming through the Pokémon also boosts its Attack stat in harsh sunlight.
When the Pokémon enters a battle, its Attack and Sp. Atk stats are slightly boosted for each of the allies in its party that have already been defeated.
