The Attack stat (Japanese: 攻撃能力 attack ability, symbol A), or informally Physical Attack, partly determines how much damage a Pokémon deals when using a physical move.

In the core series

Each Pokémon's Attack stat is used to determine how much damage a Pokémon deals when using a physical move. For more information on how Attack affects damage, see Damage → Damage calculation.

Before Generation IV, all damaging moves of the following types are physical moves, and therefore only scale with the Attack stat:

Abilities that affect Attack

III Intimidate When the Pokémon enters a battle, it intimidates opposing Pokémon and makes them cower, lowering their Attack stats.
III Huge Power Doubles the Pokémon's Attack stat.
III Hyper Cutter The Pokémon's prized, mighty pincers prevent other Pokémon from lowering its Attack stat.
III Hustle Boosts the Pokémon's Attack stat but lowers its accuracy.
III Guts It's so gutsy that having a status condition boosts the Pokémon's Attack stat.
III Pure Power Using its pure power, the Pokémon doubles its Attack stat.
IV Anger Point The Pokémon is angered when it takes a critical hit, and that maxes its Attack stat.
IV Download The Pokémon compares an opposing Pokémon's Defense and Sp. Def stats before raising its own Attack or Sp. Atk stat—whichever will be more effective.
IV Slow Start For five turns, the Pokémon's Attack and Speed stats are halved.
IV Flower Gift Boosts the Attack and Sp. Def stats of the Pokémon and its allies in harsh sunlight.
V Defiant If the Pokémon has any stat lowered by an opposing Pokémon, its Attack stat will be boosted sharply.
V Defeatist Halves the Pokémon's Attack and Sp. Atk stats when its HP drops to half or less.
V Moxie When the Pokémon knocks out a target, it shows moxie, which boosts its Attack stat.
V Justified When the Pokémon is hit by a Dark-type attack, its Attack stat is boosted by its sense of justice.
V Sap Sipper The Pokémon takes no damage when hit by Grass-type moves. Instead, its Attack stat is boosted.
VII Battle Bond When the Pokémon knocks out a target, its bond with its Trainer is strengthened, and its Attack, Sp. Atk, and Speed stats are boosted.
VIII Intrepid Sword Boosts the Pokémon's Attack stat the first time the Pokémon enters a battle.
VIII Gorilla Tactics Boosts the Pokémon's Attack stat but only allows the use of the first selected move.
VIII Chilling Neigh When the Pokémon knocks out a target, it utters a chilling neigh, which boosts its Attack stat.
IX Thermal Exchange Boosts the Attack stat when the Pokémon is hit by a Fire-type move. The Pokémon also cannot be burned.
IX Anger Shell When an attack causes its HP to drop to half or less, the Pokémon gets angry. This lowers its Defense and Sp. Def stats but boosts its Attack, Sp. Atk, and Speed stats.
IX Wind Rider Boosts the Pokémon's Attack stat if Tailwind takes effect or if the Pokémon is hit by a wind move. The Pokémon also takes no damage from wind moves.
IX Guard Dog Boosts the Pokémon's Attack stat if intimidated. Moves and items that would force the Pokémon to switch out also fail to work.
IX Tablets of Ruin The power of the Pokémon's ruinous wooden tablets lowers the Attack stats of all Pokémon except itself.
IX Orichalcum Pulse Turns the sunlight harsh when the Pokémon enters a battle. The ancient pulse thrumming through the Pokémon also boosts its Attack stat in harsh sunlight.
IX Supreme Overlord When the Pokémon enters a battle, its Attack and Sp. Atk stats are slightly boosted for each of the allies in its party that have already been defeated.

Items that affect Attack

Item Description
Protein Protein A nutritious drink for Pokémon. This drink increases base points for a Pokémon's Attack stat.
X Attack X Attack An item that sharply boosts the Attack stat of a Pokémon in battle. This effect disappears if the Pokémon leaves the battle.
Kelpsy Berry Kelpsy Berry If a Pokémon is fed this Berry, it will grow more friendly, but it will lose base points for its Attack stat.
Liechi Berry Liechi Berry If a Pokémon holds one of these Berries, its Attack stat will be boosted should it find itself in a pinch.
Choice Band Choice Band An item to be held by a Pokémon. This curious headband boosts the holder's Attack stat but only allows the use of a single move.
Light Ball Light Ball An item to be held by Pikachu. It's a mysterious orb that boosts Pikachu's Attack and Sp. Atk stats.
Thick Club Thick Club An item to be held by Cubone or Marowak. This hard bone of unknown origin boosts their Attack stat.
Power Bracer Power Bracer An item to be held by a Pokémon. Holding this bracer reduces a Pokémon's Speed in battle but allows its Attack stat to grow more quickly.
Cell Battery Cell Battery An item to be held by a Pokémon. This single-use battery boosts the Attack stat if the holder is damaged by an Electric-type attack.
Muscle Feather Muscle Feather An item to be used on a Pokémon. This feather slightly increases base points for a Pokémon's Attack stat.
X Attack 2 X Attack 2 Sharply boosts the Attack stat of a Pokémon in battle. This effect disappears if the Pokémon leaves the battle.
X Attack 3 X Attack 3 Drastically boosts the Attack stat of a Pokémon in battle. This effect disappears if the Pokémon leaves the battle.
X Attack 6 X Attack 6 Immensely boosts the Attack stat of a Pokémon in battle. This effect disappears if the Pokémon leaves the battle.
Weakness Policy Weakness Policy An item to be held by a Pokémon. If the holder is hit with a move it's weak to, this policy sharply boosts its Attack and Sp. Atk stats.
Snowball Snowball An item to be held by a Pokémon. This single-use ball of snow boosts the Attack stat if the holder is damaged by an Ice-type move.
Mighty Candy Mighty Candy A candy that is packed with energy. When given to a Pokémon, it will increase that Pokémon's Attack stat.
Mighty Candy L Mighty Candy L A big candy that is packed with energy. When given to a Pokémon at Lv. 30 or higher, it will increase that Pokémon's Attack stat.
Mighty Candy XL Mighty Candy XL A huge candy that is packed with energy. When given to a Pokémon at Lv. 60 or higher, it will increase that Pokémon's Attack stat.
Lonely Mint Lonely Mint Having a Pokémon smell this mint can make its Attack stat grow stronger. However, its Defense stat may suffer.
Adamant Mint Adamant Mint Having a Pokémon smell this mint can make its Attack stat grow stronger. However, its Sp. Atk stat may suffer.
Naughty Mint Naughty Mint Having a Pokémon smell this mint can make its Attack stat grow stronger. However, its Sp. Def stat may suffer.
