List of Pokémon by color palette in Generation I

This is a list of Pokémon sprites by their color palettes in Generation I.

Color formats

Main article: List of color palettes by index number in Generation I → Color formats

The Super Game Boy and Game Boy Color use the 15-bit RGB format, with 5 bits (a value from 0 to 31) for each color: red, green, and blue. The colors shown here have also been converted to the 24-bit RGB format, with 8 bits (a value from 0 to 255; from 0x00 to 0xFF) for each color.

For example, in the Pokémon game data, one of Bulbasaur's colors is the dark green "9 20 11" in 15-bit RGB. This color is also known as "#4AA55A" in 24-bit RGB, but this value is produced by converting the original 15-bit color and is not stored directly in the games. Some sources (including official websites, fansites, and sprite editing tools) may have slightly different 24-bit RGB values for retro game sprites. The 24-bit RGB values mentioned here are used by the respective sprites below.

List of game-based color palettes

These are the color palettes stored in the game data, allowing different groups of Pokémon to have their own color palettes. Pokémon Red and Green have different shades of white. The Japanese Pokémon Red's palette was reused in the Japanese Pokémon Blue and the localized Pokémon Red and Blue.

In a Pokémon battle, multiple palettes are present at the same time: each participating Pokémon has its own palette, in addition to separate palettes for their HP bars (which may be green, yellow, or red). The Pokémon's palette is technically applied to the entire screen when it appears by itself during Evolution (where the Pokémon quickly changes into a black silhouette), or with accompanying text in a trade, the Hall of Fame cutscenes, or the Hall of Fame data on the PC.

Mew palette

This palette is also used for the battle sprites of all Pokémon Trainers (including the player Red), as well as Professor Oak in the game intro. It is also used for all the Pokémon icons on the party, nickname, and trade screens. In the Virtual Console releases of Pokémon Yellow, Jynx's skin was changed to be purple, probably related to controversies surrounding its skin being black. Its sprites use five colors instead of four. To achieve this effect, some of the 8×8 tiles composing the sprite use an altered palette, where black is replaced with purple, which is technically possible on a Game Boy Color game.

In the new game intro cutscene from the Generation I games, NidorinoRGB and PikachuY use the Mew palette instead of their usual color palettes, resulting in slightly different colors than in main gameplay. They appear facing right here, unlike in Pokémon battles.
