The Loyal Three^[1][2] (Japanese: ともっこさま Dear Companions),^[3] also described as the Heroes of Kitakami^[4] (Japanese: キタカミの里の英雄たち Heroes of the Land of Kitakami),^[5] is a trio of Legendary Pokémon consisting of Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti. They originated from an unknown land, but currently reside in the land of Kitakami. Pecharunt is later revealed to be the apparent leader of the trio and the one that led them to Kitakami.

Overview

The three members are all male, and they share a primary type, Poison; a category, "Retainer Pokémon"; and an Ability, Toxic Chain.

After their true, greedy nature is revealed, Carmine refers to them as the Lousy Three or the "Loyal" Three. Before being known as the heroes of Kitakami, they were known as Pecharunt's retainers.

History

The Pokémon that formed the Loyal Three were once below-average Pokémon: Okidogi was small and weak, Munkidori was clumsy and dim-witted, and Fezandipiti had short, dull feathers, all living in a faraway land. One day, the Mythical Pokémon, Pecharunt, met each of them, needing retainers to help it grant its caretakers's wishes, used its Binding Mochi and toxic chains to tame and transform each of them, granting them the strength^[6], cleverness^[7], and beauty^[8] that they respectively wished for, but they also became chained to Pecharunt's will as a result, joining it in its quest to now retrieve a brilliant set of masks rumored to exist in the land of Kitakami for its caretakers.

The trio traveled through fields, mountains and seas until they arrived in Kitakami to finally do what they were tasked for. They found a man and an ogre who were becoming famous around the region due to the masks the trio was ordered to retrieve. Munkidori managed to track down where the duo lived and then, Okidogi and Fezandipiti snuck into the the den they resided in while two were absent, however, as they managed to steal the masks, the man returned to the cave. The quickly attacked and after a brief struggle, Okidogi and Fezandipiti managed to leave with just three: the Wellspring Mask, the Hearthflame Mask, and the Cornerstone Mask, as the man managed to hold onto the remaining Teal Mask, while left heavily injured.

Later, the ogre returned to its cave and found it in ruins, with only the Teal Mask left behind and no traces of its friend or the other masks. Donning the remaining Teal Mask with its cudgel in hand, the ogre set out to the nearby village in search of its friend, only to find the trio and Pecharunt gloating over their plunder. Enraged, the ogre slayed the trio and attacked Pecharunt, leaving it unconscious. Already afraid of the ogre due to its appearance, the villagers believed that the trio were actually defending them from the ogre, causing them to be even more scared of it. As the wounded ogre left the village, alone and in sorrow, the villagers named the trio the Loyal Three, and put their bodies to rest. The Loyal Three's remains were buried near the village, and a monument dedicated to honor their "sacrifice" was erected on top. The surrounding area would be known as Loyal Three Park, later renamed to Loyalty Plaza.

Only the village mask maker, who had gifted the ogre and the man with the masks, understood what had transpired between the Loyal Three and the ogre. However, the other villagers dismissed him as a heretic for attempting to explain the truth. To protect his family from suffering the village's wrath as he did, he kept the truth hidden from everyone, and passed the truth down to his descendants as a family secret. From that point on, the Loyal Three were unjustly revered as heroes by the people of Kitakami for generations, even having them as part of their Festival of Masks, crafting masks of Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti, along with the ogre's Teal Mask, as a way to celebrate their heroes's story and sacrifice.

According to local Kitakami beliefs, worshiping the Loyal Three would grant various benefits such as kindness, success, and good fortune.

Prior to the release of update 2.0.1, the Loyal Three could be seen on a poster in Medali, teasing the future expansion.

The Loyal Three formally appear in The Teal Mask. They are somehow suddenly resurrected after their grave was punched by Kieran and emerge from their burial ground, and they proceed to Mossui Town, where they are fed by the villagers and given back Ogerpon's masks that they had stolen, which the villagers had kept in Kitakami Hall. Afterwards, the three head to the Dreaded Den to fight Ogerpon again, but are stopped by the player, causing them to flee. Wanting to help Ogerpon retrieve her masks back, the player forms a group called the "Mask Retrieval Squad" with Carmine and Kieran — the latter two being descendants of the mask maker who provided Ogerpon with her masks.

Presumably due to the food they were fed earlier, the Loyal Three assumed titanic forms, requiring the player and Carmine to team up to take each one down together. Eventually, they were beaten and forced out of their titanic forms, causing them to leave behind their stolen masks.

In the post-story, the player can optionally rematch and catch the individual members at the same areas they were fought at before.

In the Mochi Mayhem epilogue, if the player uses any of the Loyal Three members against their former leader, Pecharunt, as it tries to take control over Mossui Town, it'll become enraged, possibly feeling betrayed that they now follow the player instead of it.

• During the scene showcasing Ogerpon's true story as told by Yukito, when the Loyal Three are about to steal Ogerpon's masks, Pecharunt can be barely seen right above Okidogi. What appears to be a Pecharunt decoration can also be seen at Peachy's in Mossui Town, which is later implied in Mochi Mayhem to be the actual Pecharunt, simply slumbering after the Loyal Three's defeat at the hands of Ogerpon.
• During the start of the battles against the Titanic forms of Okidogi, Munkidori, Fezandipiti, and Pecharunt, a psychedelic effect briefly appears on the screen. This effect appears to be caused by Pecharunt's toxic powers, as each of the Loyal Three members possess a toxic chain wrapped around their body and Pecharunt is the source of that power.
• If the player uses any member of the Loyal Three in the battle against Pecharunt, Pecharunt will react with shock and anger, yelling out "Pechaaa! Chraaahhh!".
  • Pecharunt will repeat this reaction every time each Loyal Three member is sent out for the first time.
  • Inversely, Ogerpon will be the one to react should she be used in battle against Pecharunt. Much like it, Ogerpon will react with anger and loathing, yelling out "GRAH! Pon PON!!!"

Origin

The Loyal Three, Pecharunt, and Ogerpon appear to reference the Japanese folktale of Momotarō, albeit with the roles of the heroes and the villains reversed. The tale of Momotarō relates the titular Momotarō, a boy born from inside a peach, who traveled alongside a talking dog, monkey, and pheasant to fight a band of oni (a Japanese folkloric creature commonly equated to ogres in translations).

The names of the trio's members all reference different expressions that are associated with happiness: Okidogi being taken from "okeydokey", Munkidori being taken from "hunky-dory", and Fezandipiti being taken from "serendipity".

As per each of their Scarlet Pokédex entries and typing, the Loyal Three may also draw inspiration from the common media trope: brawn vs brains vs beauty, with Okidogi being the brawn (part Fighting type, “…Okidogi transformed and gained a powerful phisique”), Munkidori being the brains (part Psychic type, “It stimulated Munkidori’s brain…”), and Fezandipiti being the beauty (part Fairy type, “Fezandipiti owes its beautiful looks…”).

Additionally, the Loyal Three appear to share a thematic tie to the number eight. This may be because the character 8 looks like a set of chains. Eight is also considered a lucky number in many Asian cultures, including Japanese, which aligns with the trio's naming convention and role. Notably, there are eight complete chains worn by the three: Okidogi has three in its scarf, Munkidori has one in its headband, and Fezandipiti has four in its belt. The group's shared base HP stat of 88 can be read in Japanese as goroawase for やばい yabai, which can mean "terrible" or "dangerous", referencing their true nature as greedy, vicious thieves. Conversely, 88 can also be read as goroawase for ぱちぱち pachipachi, the sound of clapping. This could reference the trio's misinterpreted role as heroes in their story. Pecharunt, often viewed as the leader of the Loyal Three, also shares the same base HP stat of 88; all of its other stats are 88 as well, except for it's Defense, which is 160, a multiple of 8. Pecharunt is also caught at level 88.
