Dodrio (Japanese: ドードリオ Dodorio) is a dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves from Doduo starting at level 31.

Biology

Physiology

Dodrio are bird Pokémon with three heads. They have very small wings hidden under the fluffy brown feathers that cover their black underside. Because their wings are so small, they have little to no flying ability, but can jump incredibly high. Dodrio's long legs allow it to deal devastating kicks, but only frontward. However, to protect its back, one of the necks can turn around and fiercely peck the opponent.

Gender differences

A female Dodrio has brown necks, while the male has black ones.

Special abilities

Dodrio have long legs which allow it to jump incredibly high, which makes up for its lack of flight. These legs also allow it to run incredibly fast. It can deliver devastating blows with its sharp beaks.

Behavior

Dodrio love to wake up early and call their cries every morn, and also love to run. They are usually very crotchety, arguing with themselves on a constant basis.

Habitat

Dodrio can be found living in deserts and plains.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Dodrio mainly eat seeds and berries.

In the anime

Ash and friends riding Dodrio with Kellyn

Dodrio first appeared in Pokémon - I Choose You!, where it has a brief appearance, while shouting its cry to the rising sun like a rooster, notably as the first Pokémon seen in real life in the anime (all Pokémon that had appeared beforehand in the episode were either on TV, in dreams, or not real). Its next appearance was in The Flame Pokémon-athon!. Dario used the three-headed bird to compete in a race, but was beaten by Ash who was riding Lara Laramie's Ponyta, after it evolved into Rapidash.

Dodrio also made a cameo in A Chansey Operation. This Dodrio had its necks tied in a knot.

Falkner, the Gym Leader of Violet City, used a Dodrio to battle Ash in Fighting Flyer with Fire.

Gary Oak's Doduo evolved into a Dodrio some time before Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl. Gary used it to attack Team Rocket's helicopter when they made a second attempt to capture Aerodactyl.

Dodrio was used in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part Two by Ash, Hajime, Dawn and Brock to get to the Riolu that J had kidnapped.

A Dodrio appeared in Camping It Up!.

Dawn used a Dodrio in the First leg of the Pokémon Triatholon in DP091.

In the manga

Yellow's Doduo evolved into Dodrio in Template:PSV of Pokémon Special. It was seen again in Template:PSV, managing to save Pika and Template:P2 from a surfing accident.

Pokédex entries

This Pokémon was unavailable prior to Generation I.
Generation I
Red Uses its three brains to execute complex plans. While two heads sleep, one head is said to stay awake.
Blue
Yellow One of Doduo's 2 heads splits to form a unique species. It runs close to 40 MPH in prairies.
Stadium The three heads express joy, sorrow and anger as they plan strategy together. When it sleeps, one head remains awake.
Generation II
Gold It collects data and plans three times as wisely, but it may think too much and become immobilized.
Silver If one of the heads gets to eat, the others will be satisfied, too, and they will stop squabbling.
Crystal An enemy that takes its eyes off any of the three heads--even for a second--will get Template:M2 severely.
Stadium 2 It collects data and plans three times as wisely, but it may think too much and become immobilized.
Generation III
Ruby Watch out if Dodrio's three heads are looking in three separate directions. It's a sure sign that it is on its guard. Don't go near this Pokémon if it's being wary - it may decide to peck you.
Sapphire Apparently, the heads aren't the only parts of the body that Dodrio has three of. It has three sets of hearts and lungs as well, so it is capable of running long distances without rest.
Emerald A peculiar Pokémon species with three heads. It vigorously races across grassy plains even in arid seasons with little rainfall.
FireRed An odd species that is rarely found. The three heads respectively represent joy, sadness, and anger.
LeafGreen Uses its three brains to execute complex plans. While two heads sleep, one head is said to stay awake.
Generation IV
Diamond When Doduo evolves into this odd breed, one of its heads splits into two. It runs at nearly 40 mph.

Trivia

  • While one of its heads is saying something in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, the others say me too or mine too, but its pre-evolved form's other head won't.
  • Doduo and Dodrio are the only Pokémon that receive the ability Run Away that aren't in the Ground Egg Group.
  • Before Generation IV, the normal necks of Dodrio is the color of the female's (brown), while its pre-evolution's is based on the male's (black).
  • Dodrio ties with Snorlax for the highest base Attack stat of any Generation I Template:Type2, at 110.
  • Even though Dodrio is based on a dodo, a bird that can't fly, it can still learn the move fly

Origin

Despite its name, it seems like it has more in common with ostriches or Chocobos than dodos.

Name origin

Dodrio's name seems to be a combination of dodo, an extinct, flightless, bird, and trio, meaning a group of three. The dori in its Japanese name may also come from 鳥 tori, bird, or it may be a combination of ドードー dodo and トリオ trio because of its three heads.
