The final segment of the gym battle continues for the Tri. Dent's Yanappu keeps the upper-hand through using SolarBeam on Ash's Mijumaru. Ash commands Mijumaru to use it's Shell Blade protectively and blocks out the move, leaving everyone in the gym stunned. Dent happily praises Mijumaru's abilities and continues the battle by using Bullet Seed, that was also blocked out by Mijumaru's Shell blade. Mijumaru finally uses the move offensively against Yanappu but is struck down and nearly knocked unconscious. Dent reveals his battle cry to be "イツ テイスティング タイム!" and earns cheers from his cheerleaders.
With his first Gym Badge at stake, Ash’s battle challenge rages on. So far, our hero has defeated one of the three brothers who lead the Striaton City Gym, and lost to another. He now faces the deciding match against Cilan. Early in the match, the Gym Leader’s Pansage proves to be a formidable opponent, and Cilan declares Ash’s battling style a bit bland and predictable. Just then, Ash tells Oshawott to aim its Water Gun against the Gym wall, a creative strategy that ultimately leads to Ash’s victory, earning him the Trio Badge!

Dent mentions Yanappu's type advantage over Mijumaru's but is unable to shake Ash's confidence for the battle. Ash commands Mijumaru to use Water Gun toward the wall, making it ricochet toward it's fallen shell and re-power it. It regains the weapon and severely injures Yanappu with it.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket is busy with its next assignment—to extract the mysterious substance known as future energy from the Dreamyard, an abandoned research facility. But one of the research scientists, Dr. Fennel, has discovered their plans. She joins Ash, Iris, and Cilan, as well as the Pokémon Munna and Musharna, in an attempt to stop Jessie, James, and Meowth. However, it is to no avail, and Team Rocket escapes with the data!

The two at nearly equal health attack each other simultaneously. Yanappu with Bite, and Mijumaru reusing it's Shell blade. Both attacks hit, however only Yanappu faints. Putting Ash victorious with two wins out of three and officially defeating the Gym.
Back at the Gym, Cilan reveals that as a Pokémon Connoisseur, he’s fascinated by Ash’s ability to see the pairing possibilities between Trainer and Pokémon. His interest ultimately leads him to ask if he can join our hero on his journey. Ash agrees, and the traveling trio of Ash, Cilan, and Iris is born!

Ash is awarded the Tri Badge by Dent, Pod and Corn respectively. Eagerly, Ash asked for Iris' opinion on the battle. In which she began to tease him for needlessly challenging all three Gym Leaders, angering Ash before she hastily headed out of the gym without him.
Plot
After beating Chili, and losing to Cress, it is the decisive match for the Trio at the Striaton Gym for Ash. Cilan gathers light with the sprout on his head before firing a Solar Beam at Oshawott. Quickly, Oshawott grabs the scalchop on his belly and holds it out. The strategy works, with the Solar Beam being deflects upwards and through the Gym’s roof. Cilan, his opponent, is full of praise for Oshawott, but nevertheless Ash is not completely out of the woods - he still has to finish the battle. Pansage follows up with some Bullet Seed attacks, but Oshawott once again deflects them with ease, his scalchop acting as a shield. Confident, Ash commands Oshawott to use Razor Shell. Oshawott readies his scalchop - it glows blue for a while, before Oshawott jumps up and prepares to strike Pansage. However, the Grass Monkey Pokémon retaliates with Bullet Seed, sending Oshawott into panic and disarray. As the Water Pokémon struggles, he loses his grip on the scalchop, which flies to the edge of the field. Oshawott stands back up, but Pansage keeps him away from retrieving his scalchop.

Ash decides to head to Sanyou City's Pokémon Center to victoriously rest up his Pokémon for his next gym battle, while Dent happily watches from a far.
Cilan announces a slogan of his: "Time for the battle to be served!", and the cheerleaders go wild with excitement. In his dream-like Pokémon Connoisseur state, he briefly mentions that Ash uses "simple, deducible, and bland" attack patterns and has no compatibility with Oshawott, unlike the bond shared between him and his Pansage, whose attacks have the "aroma of a freshly mowed lawn". He ends with a simple pose, remarking that Ash made a poor choice of Pokémon with regard to type compatibilities. Ash explains that types do not matter, but again, Cilan believes otherwise, claiming he is becoming desperate, and with his "sour" attitude, he will "just spoil the flavor of Oshawott's battle". Ash states they will see about that, and immediately, he pulls a stunt: he asks Oshawott to aim his Water Gun at the wall. His Water Gun ricochets off the wall, between the rocks and towards his scalchop - the scalchop flies into the air, and Oshawott catches it. With that, he readies another Razor Shell attack, and this time, he manages to hit his target; Pansage is caught by surprise and limps backwards. Cilan tells Pansage to use Bite. At that instant, Ash tells Oshawott to use Razor Shell, and both Pokémon rush towards each other, ready to attack. Both score a glancing blow on their opponent; they face away from each other and stand there, motionless. Suddenly, Pansage gives way and faints, shocking Cilan and sending a wave of disappointment through the group of cheerleaders.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket began investigating the building ruins at the Site of Dreams. Taking out a portable machine to analyze the area while searching it themselves. This causes a disturbance of energy in the area and awakens a dormant Pokémon deep inside. Massive waves of glowing pink aura flow into town and begin to disrupt the town's Pokémon, especially a Trainer's Munna.
Oshawott sits on the ground to rest. Ash is now victorious, having defeated two of the three Striaton City Gym Leaders. The Striaton Gym brothers award Ash the Trio. Turning to Iris, Ash tries to show off his Badge, but she reprimands his decisions to challenge all three Gym Leaders and for using Pokémon of incompatible types. Ash gets annoyed and rebukes Iris by trying to challenge her to a Pokémon battle, but she refuses, seemingly embarrassed. Cilan steps in and talks about the two's "bouquet", and Iris subsequently scolds Ash for being a "small child", not knowing what "bouquet" is. As Cilan questions if the two are traveling together, Iris admits they aren’t and turns to leave, leaving Ash and Cilan puzzled.

Ash arrived at the Sanyou City Pokémon Center and hands his injured Pokémon over to Nurse Joy, whom he mistakenly greets as the Joy he met back in Karakusa Town. Ash is shown a family portrait of Isshu's identical Joys. Dent immediately appears as Nurse Joy asks him about his battle at the Sanyou Gym and answered in his place, complimenting Ash's abilities.
Meanwhile, the Team Rocket trio have arrived at the desolate Dreamyard. They begin their mission by assembling a machine to collect data to be sent back to their headquarters. As the machine rumbles and kicks into life, the surrounding area glows bright pink; the disturbance caused by the machine forces a dormant Musharna awake, and Fennel’s Fennel from elsewhere senses it, causing its eyes to glow and itself to shiver in fear.

Dent requests to talk to Ash privately and the two head over to the waiting room. Dent begins to pester Ash with random questions, with Ash's approval first, before a Joy calls to the front desk. A Tabunne comes by shortly to return Ash's Pokémon and he quickly learns from Dent that Joy use Tabunne as their helpers in place of Chansey in the Isshu Region.
Ash arrives at the Striaton City Pokémon Center. As he hands his Pokémon over the counter, he addresses the Nurse Joy as the one whom he met at Accumula Town. However, she corrects him, telling him that she is the older sister of the Joy at Accumula Town, and shows him her family photo: three rows of identical Joys crowded together within the small frame. As Nurse Joy questions if he came from a Gym battle, Cilan affirmatively answers from behind, and requests to talk to Ash.

Iris dashes into the Pokémon Center seconds later with a glowing and incapacitated Iris, alerting Ash, Dent and Joy that a mysterious pink light that was filling the city had consumed it and left Kibago, along with all other Town's Pokémon unconscious. Just as she finishes, a Professor flees into the Center and spots the glowing Kibago.
Seated in a corner of the waiting area, Cilan questions Ash fervently, with regard to their previous battle, before a confused-looking Ash is called on to receive his Pokémon. An Audino appears with Ash's Pokémon, and Ash soon learns from Cilan that Nurse Joy has an Nurse Joy helping her within the Pokémon Center. Ash checks his Pokédex.

She commands her Munna to use Dream Eater on it and manages to awaken it. After consuming it's dream, it released it into a smoky cloud depicting it. In the dream, it evolved into an Onondo, then immediately into an Ononokus. The Professor introduces herself as Makomo, and explains that she specializes in mysterious energy waves such as these then leads Ash, Iris and Dent outside, where they meet up with an alternate looking Jenny, who demands Ash put Pikachu in it's Pokéball.
Suddenly, Iris rushes into the Pokémon Center, her Iris glowing pink as she carries him to Nurse Joy. She exclaims that the city is emitting pink light, and as Axew was exposed to the light, he too started glowing pink and fell asleep. At that moment, a woman in a lab coat, together with her Munna, runs into the Pokémon Center. As she sees Axew, she quickly asks Munna to wake Axew up, and the Dream Eater Pokémon complies: it starts consuming the pink cloud surrounding Axew. As soon as Munna is done, the floral patterns on its body glow for a while, before it expels a dense cloud that was Axew's dream. Axew finally wakes up, and as he watches his own dream, seeing himself running, before evolving into a Fraxure, and then into a Haxorus. The lady introduces herself as Professor Fennel. Leading Ash, Iris and Cilan outside, they find the city covered in pink, and Professor Fennel explains that it is actually Dream Mist produced by Munna's evolved form, Musharna. Ash checks his Pokédex for Musharna.

Makomo places Ash's hat over Pikachu's head and the group get into Jenny's squad car. Where she explains the story of how building at the Site of Dreams was demolished. Originally she had worked there as a Professor, with a Munna and Musharna that she experimented on, but treated lovingly. One day a group of men in trench coats came and attacked Musharna, causing it to go berserk and destroy the area. With Musharna nowhere to be found. Explaning Musharna to be the cause of the mysterious energy waves. Just as she finishes her story, they spot the massive amounts of energy pouring from the Site of Dreams, there they meet up with the disguised Team Rocket who quickly unmask themselves. During introduction, Makomo realizes that Team Rocket were the cause of Musharna's awakening and the group begins to frantically search for it. Musharna reveals itself, but Team Rocket attacks Makomo and Ash immediately and Makomo captures it. Ash, enraged takes his hat back and orders Pikachu to attack them with Makomo's Munna joining in quickly. They easily free Musharna from Team Rocket's grasp and it clears out the aura waves from the area as Team Rocket attempts to attack it. While no longer having the upper-hand, Team Rocket quickly uses Gust to stir up sand and flee the scene before they could be arested by Jenny. Makomo embraces Mursharna and the two make up after thanking Ash and co while Team Rocket reports their mission failed.
A police car pull up in front of the group, and Officer Jenny alights from the car, telling Ash to return Pikachu into his Poké Ball to avoid contact with the Dream Mist. Ash reveals, to Iris's and Cilan's surprise, that Pikachu does not like to go back into his Poké Ball. Professor Fennel has an idea: she places Ash's hat over Pikachu and reassures Cilan that Munna will be all right from the smoke's exposure, and suggests going to the Dreamyard. As the group travels in Officer Jenny's car, they discuss the Dreamyard. Before the explosion had occurred, the Dreamyard was originally a research facility for Pokémon Energy, and it was investigating the possibility of harnessing clean energy through Musharna. However, such research became popular and many people ambitiously wanted rights to the project. As Musharna had to eat dreams in order to develop the energy, it absorbed the negativity of such thoughts and intentions, and thus, facing a great deal of pressure, it was unable to take the stress and caused an explosion. Musharna disappeared, and the research ceased. Fennel explains that she returned to Striaton City when Munna detected Musharna's presence. As they drive further down to the outskirts of the city, they soon notice a strong pink light emitting from behind the trees in front of them.

Dent decides to leave the Gym and bids farewell to his brothers, giving him Best Wishes. Dent then leaves to travel alongside Ash and Iris, and the three head out for Shippou City!
The Team Rocket trio is extremely pleased with the amount of data they are receiving. While they delight in the success of their mission, a police car suddenly draws to a stop behind them, and the group emerges. Immediately, Professor Fennel realizes what is going on: the machine Team Rocket is using is causing residual energy to react strongly. As Officer Jenny questions who the three of them are, the trio breaks into their motto, and reveals their identities. As the Rocket trio announces that they are using the residual energy at the Dreamyard to fuel Team Rocket's ambition of taking over Unova, Professor Fennel becomes disappointed at the thought of being involved in such a research project. Cilan reminds her of the reason she came to the Dreamyard-- the connection between Munna and Musharna, and Munna agrees. Seemingly in response to their answer, the ground trembles, and lightning bolts rise to the sky to form a pink veil; Musharna calls out in response. A gap soon materializes in front of them and Musharna appears. Professor Fennel approaches it, but Team Rocket capture it with their machine. Ash takes back his hat and tells Pikachu to use Volt Tackle. As the Mouse Pokémon charges himself with electricity, blue beams shoot forth from the machine and attempt to stop him from advancing. Fennel tells Munna to use Psychic to crumple the machine and Pikachu rams it head-on with Volt Tackle, causing the machine to explode and freeing Musharna. Immediately, the pink veil disappears. Jessie calls out her Jessie, using a Gust attack aimed at the ground to make a clean getaway.

Fennel is now reunited with her Musharna and embraces it, trying to make up for what Musharna has gone through. While she thanks Ash and the group, Cilan goes into his Pokémon Connoisseur state and dreamily talks about Fennel and her Musharna's 'harmony'.

Meanwhile, Giovanni announces that the Team Rocket trio has completed their mission: the data gathered from the Dreamyard has been successfully transmitted and sent for analysis. He tells them to wait for their next mission.

At the Striaton City Gym, Cilan announces to Chili and Cress that meeting Ash has inspired him to go on a journey of his own, and though initially suprised, Chili and Cress offer their support and bid him farewell. On their way out of the city, Cilan asks Ash if he can join him on his journey, and Ash agrees. While Ash and Cilan have decided on their next destination, Iris shows up and decides to travel with them as well. Ash declares that they're all going to work towards their respective dreams together and asks Iris what her dream is, but she simply smiles and says it's a secret. With a newly expanded circle of friends, the three of them now start making their way to the Gym in Nacrene City.

Plot

After beating Chili, and losing to Cress, it is the decisive match for the Trio Badge at the Striaton Gym for Ash. Pansage gathers light with the sprout on his head before firing a Solar Beam at Oshawott.

Oshawott sits on the ground to rest. Ash is now victorious, having defeated two of the three Striaton City Gym Leaders. The Striaton Gym brothers award Ash the Trio Badge.

Meanwhile, the Team Rocket trio have arrived at the desolate Dreamyard. They begin their mission by assembling a machine to collect data to be sent back to their headquarters. As the machine rumbles and kicks into life, the surrounding area glows bright pink; the disturbance caused by the machine forces a dormant Musharna awake, and Fennel’s Munna from elsewhere senses it, causing its eyes to glow and itself to shiver in fear.

Seated in a corner of the waiting area, Cilan questions Ash fervently, with regard to their previous battle, before a confused-looking Ash is called on to receive his Pokémon. An Audino appears with Ash's Pokémon, and Ash soon learns from Cilan that Nurse Joy has an Audino helping her within the Pokémon Center. Ash checks his Pokédex.

Suddenly, Iris rushes into the Pokémon Center, her Axew glowing pink as she carries him to Nurse Joy.

Jessie calls out her Woobat, using a Gust attack aimed at the ground to make a clean getaway.
