Phanpy (Japanese: ゴマゾウ Gomazou) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
It evolves into Donphan starting at level 25.
Biology
Physiology
Phanpy are blue elephant Pokémon that are quite small in stature. Unlike its evolved form, it has a cute appearence. It has two orange pads on each of its big ears and another on the bridge of its nose, which is also quite long.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Despite its small size, Phanpy is quite strong, and can easily carry an adult human on its back. It also has the ability to rollout just like its fully evolved form, Donphan. Its trunk is also quite sensitive.
Behavior
It is a timid Pokémon that flees very easily. However, it has a very affectionate side and can be very friendly, even if it doesn't know its own strength. During the deserted morning hours, Phanpy comes ashore where it deftly uses its trunk to take a shower. When others gather around, they thoroughly douse each other with water. Phanpy can be seen drying their soaking-wet bodies at the edge of water. For its nest, Phanpy digs a vertical pit in the ground at the edge of a river. It marks the area around its nest with its trunk to let the other Phanpy know that the area has been claimed. Phanpy's big ears serve as broad fans, and when it becomes hot, it flaps its ears busily to cool down.
Habitat
While it is normally found in rocky regions and terrain, it also likes lakes and watersides.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
It probably loves fruit. It seems to have an affinity with the Passho berry, as it is sometimes found with this berry.
In the anime
Major appearances
Phanpy made its debut appearance in the anime in Hatching a Plan. It hatched from an egg that Ash Ketchum received in Extreme Pokémon. It evolved into Donphan in Reversing the Charges.
Minor appearances
Phanpy first appeared in Spell of the Unown, however, it was just a Pokémon that Molly Hale dreamed up and made real by the power of the Unown.
A Phanpy appeared in The Saffron Con! as a Pokémon owned by a Coordinator.

Trivia
- In Pokémon Crystal, it could learn Water Gun through breeding, in a probable reference to elephants. Elephants suck water up into the trunk and then blow it into their mouth. Also, they inhale water to spray on their body during bathing. Despite this, it can't learn Water Gun at all in later games. It isn't even able to learn Water Pulse via TM03.
- Although it is a Template:Type2 Pokémon, it cannot learn any Ground-type moves by level-up.
- Phanpy and Teddiursa, along with their evolutions, are the only Pokémon to swap version-exclusive status between localizations. While Phanpy and Donphan are found only in the Japanese Gold, they are not found in Gold in other languages, being found in the Silver Version of those languages instead, with Teddiursa and Ursaring getting the opposite treatment.
Origin
This Pokémon is based on an elephant calf.
Name origin
Phanpy's name is derived from the word elephant. The -py suffix might have been added to designate Phanpy's name in the diminutive to reflect its small size and its infantile appearance.
Gomazou is probably a combination of 当歳駒 tōsaigoma, yearling, and 象 zō, elephant.
