Neutralizing Gas (Japanese: かがくへんかガス Chemical Change Gas) is an Ability introduced in Generation VIII. It is the signature Ability of Koffing's evolutionary lines.

Effect

In battle

Neutralizing Gas suppresses the effects of Abilities of other Pokémon currently in battle. When a Neutralizing Gas user switches in, the Ability displays a message, even before entry hazards take effect.

Once Neutralizing Gas is no longer applying, Abilities that activate when gained (i.e. Abilities that activate when a Pokémon is switched in, such as Intimidate) immediately pop up an activation message regardless of whether they have already done so, with the exceptions of Unnerve (which still applies but without displaying a message) and Imposter (which only activates when switched in, not when gained). If Neutralizing Gas stops applying because the Pokémon with Neutralizing Gas is about to switch out, those Abilities activate before the switch occurs (e.g. if Intimidate is activated this way, it will decrease the Attack of the Pokémon with Neutralizing Gas before it switches out, rather than decreasing the Attack of the Pokémon who switches in to replace it).

Neutralizing Gas cannot suppress itself, Multitype, Zen Mode, Stance Change, Power Construct, Schooling, RKS System, Shields Down, Comatose, Disguise, Gulp Missile, Ice Face, or As One.

Neutralizing Gas cannot be copied by Trace or Role Play. Neutralizing Gas cannot be swapped by Skill Swap or Wandering Spirit. Entrainment fails if the user has Neutralizing Gas, but can succeed even if the target has Neutralizing Gas. However, Neutralizing Gas can be replaced (e.g. by Worry Seed) or suppressed (e.g. by Gastro Acid) like any other Ability, except that it cannot be suppressed by itself or by another instance of Neutralizing Gas.

Outside of battle

Neutralizing Gas has no effect outside of battle.
