Walkthrough:Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire/Part 6

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
These pages follow the original Game Boy Advance iteration, not Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. The guide for those games can be found here.

Mauville City

Mauville City

Mauville City is located in central Hoenn, at the intersection of Routes 110 to the south, 111 to the north, 117 to the west, and 118 to the east. A bicycle shop in the northeast offers several different models for weary travelers. At the Mauville Game Corner, patrons try their luck in the hopes of winning big. The Mauville Gym stands in the northwest part of the city.

Lady Luck

Visit the south-central house and speak to the woman inside. She would like to visit Slateport City to purchase some Harbor Mail, but has no bicycle for the long trip. Buy a piece of Mail from the Poké Mart there, then deliver it to her to receive a Coin Case as thanks. This case allows the holder to try their luck in the Mauville Game Corner and can hold up to 9,999 Coins, which may be redeemed for valuable prizes.

A Smash Hit

Visit the southeast house and speak to the Scientist inside to receive HM06 (Rock Smash). When used in the field, this move allows you to remove breakable rocks, often clearing the way to new areas in the process. Wild Pokémon may even appear when their hiding place is removed! To use it, Trainers must first earn the Badge from the local Gym.

Rydel's Cycles

A bicycle shop known as Rydel's Cycles is located in the northeast part of the city. The owner notices how dirty your Running Shoes have become, and is shocked to learn that you have traveled all the way from Littleroot Town on foot. He decides to give you one of his bicycles, and explains that there are two different models available. The Mach Bike can reach speeds high enough to ride up muddy slopes and over cracked tiles. The Acro Bike can perform tricks, like wheelies and bunny hops. Each model allows the rider to reach areas that are otherwise inaccessible. Handbooks that explain each model's abilities are located in the store's backroom. Whichever model is selected may be exchanged for the other at any time by speaking to Rydel.

Mauville Game Corner

Mauville Game Corner

The Mauville Game Corner is located in the southwest part of the city. The venue features two roulette wheels and sixteen slot machines. Coins can be purchased at the counter from the woman on the left in bundles of 50 for $1,000 or 500 for $10,000.

Share the Wealth

Speak to the girl to the left of the service counter. It turns out that she accidentally got two of the same Doll, and offers you the spare. The type of Doll received matches your first partner Pokémon: either a Treecko Doll, Torchic Doll, or Mudkip Doll.

Prize Corner

Coins can be exchanged for prizes at the counter from the two women on the right.

A Familiar Face

As you approach the Mauville Gym, you find Wally and his uncle in front of the building. Wally wants to challenge the Gym to see how much stronger he has become. His uncle admits that he has grown stronger, but is afraid that challenging a Gym may be too much for him. Wally notices you at this point, and asks if you would battle him to help convince his uncle.

VS Wally

Wally has not yet captured any other Pokémon, so he has only his Ralts. Its only damaging move is Confusion, a weaker move that may confuse the target. Bug-, Ghost-, and Dark-type moves are most effective, but are not necessary as both its physical Defense and Special Defense are fairly low.

Afterward, Wally gives in and tells his uncle that he will return to Verdanturf Town. He thanks you for the battle, and his uncle tries to cheer him up by telling him that there is no limit to how strong he can become. The two begin to leave, but then his uncle turns back to you. He has just realized that you were likely the person to help Wally catch his first Pokémon, and invites you to visit them in Verdanturf Town.

Mauville Gym

Mauville Gym
Mauville City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Wattson

The Cheerfully Electrifying Man

The Mauville Gym specializes in Electric-type Pokémon. Electric-type moves are super effective against Flying- and Water-type Pokémon, while Electric-type Pokémon are weak to Ground-type moves.

The Gym features two sets of electrical barriers, one red and one blue, that can be toggled by stepping on floor switches that are shaped like a lightning bolt. Step on the switch nearest the door to disable the blue barriers and enable the red ones, then go east and fight Battle Girl Vivian. Step on the switch next to her to reactivate the blue barriers, then move southwest toward Youngster Ben. Go north and step on the final switch to reactivate the red barriers, then battle Guitarist Kirk to clear the way to the Gym Leader.

Wattson's Magnemite has a high Special Attack rating, which lets it deal a good bit of damage with ThunderShock. Supersonic and Thunder Wave allow it to further harass the target with confusion and paralysis, respectively. Voltorb's high Speed can be problematic, especially if the volatile Pokémon decides to use Selfdestruct! His Magneton is similar to Magnemite, but Shock Wave is stronger than ThunderShock and never misses its target. Ground-type moves are effective against all three of Wattson's Pokémon, while Magnemite and Magneton are also vulnerable to Fire and Fighting attacks.

Route 117

Route 117

Route 117 leads west from Mauville City to Verdanturf Town. The path serves as a shortcut back to western Hoenn, by way of Rusturf Tunnel. A Pokémon Day Care stands at the east end of the route.

Pokémon Day Care

The Pokémon Day Care is a facility that raises Pokémon for busy Trainers. For a small fee, up to two Pokémon can be left here to be raised by the Day Care staff. During their stay, Pokémon will gradually level up and learn new moves. When two compatible Pokémon are left at the same time, their Trainer may return to find an Egg! The two Pokémon must be of opposite genders, and the resulting Egg will hatch into the unevolved form of the female parent. The Day-Care Man watches over the Pokémon in their care from a gap in the fence, and hints at the odds of finding one.

Whenever an Egg is found, the Day-Care Man will be facing the road, eager to talk to you. Speak to him to receive the Egg, and carry it with you on your journey. The more you travel with an Egg, the faster the Pokémon inside will hatch.

Verdanturf Town

Verdanturf Town

Verdanturf Town is a small town at the west end of Route 117. Due to the prevailing wind pattern, the area is always kept clear of falling volcanic ash. The local Contest Hall holds Normal Rank competitions, the first step for every aspiring Pokémon Coordinator.

Wanda's house

The south-central house is home to Wally's aunt and uncle, and his cousin, Wanda.

According to her mother, Wanda is concerned about her boyfriend, who has lately been working non-stop to complete the construction of Rusturf Tunnel. She often goes there to visit him.

Wally is visiting with his uncle's family in the hopes that the fresh, clean air will improve his health. He may have lost to you in Mauville City, but vows to continue his training and challenge the region's Gyms. He promises to challenge you to another battle once he has grown stronger.

Friendship checker

The southwest house belongs to a woman and her Pikachu. Speak to her, and she will evaluate the friendliness of the first Pokémon in your party. There are certain Pokémon that can only be acquired when a Pokémon is happy with its Trainer. There are many things that can be done in order to deepen a Pokémon's friendship with its Trainer, like feeding it vitamins and raising it to a new level.

Contest Hall

The local Contest Hall accepts registrations for Normal Rank competitions. Each new entrant is issued a Contest Pass in order to participate. A Pokémon Contest involves four Trainers entering one Pokémon each in competitive judging. A Contest has two stages of judging, primary and secondary. Primary judging is a popularity poll involving the audience. Secondary judging features appeals by the Pokémon using their moves. Trainers must plan their appeals carefully to earn the most attention of the Judge and excite the audience. The primary and secondary scores are added at the end, with the highest-scoring Pokémon declared the winner.

Rusturf Tunnel

Rusturf Tunnel

In Search of Sight

From the east end of the tunnel, take the path on the left first. This leads to a secluded part of Route 116 that was inaccessible on the previous visit. A PokéManiac here has lost his glasses, so dig out the Itemfinder to start searching. A pair of BlackGlasses can be found a few steps west of him, but after inspection, he determines that they are not the pair that he lost. He wonders aloud if he even lost them in the area and wanders off to continue his search, leaving the BlackGlasses with you.

Before moving on, be sure to grab the HP Up from the mountainside.

A Long-Awaited Reunion

Follow the tunnel northward to find Wanda standing next to a pair of cracked rocks. Use Rock Smash to clear the debris, reuniting her with her hardworking boyfriend. He gives you HM04 (Strength) as thanks, and the pair leave for her home so that he can rest. With the debris removed, the tunnel can now be used as a shortcut between western and central Hoenn.

Route 116

The Researcher's Reward

Continue through Rusturf Tunnel to its western exit to return to Route 116. The same Devon researcher from earlier can be found just outside the tunnel. As thanks for delivering the Devon Goods to Captain Stern, he wishes to reward you with one of Devon's newest products: a Repeat Ball. From this point onward, Repeat Balls and Timer Balls are available for purchase in Rustboro City.
