Like all other Gyms in Paldea, the Medali Gym building itself is simply used for registering Gym challengers. The Gym Test requires the player to gather clues across Medali, and the Gym battle is conducted at the Treasure Eatery restaurant.
Nemona will challenge the player to a battle here if it is the third, fifth, or seventh Gym the player challenges. In case of the encounters at the third and seventh Gyms, the battle will take place before the Gym Test, while with the encounter at the fifth Gym, it'll take place after the Gym battle.
Gym Test
The Gym Test of the Medali Gym requires the challenger to figure out the secret menu item. At the start of the test, the player is given one clue for the secret menu item, while the other clues are scattered in various places throughout the town. Other Gym challengers can be found across Medali and will give hints to the player if defeated, which will help the player in finding the clues.
Once the player has figured out the secret menu item, they must report it to the waiter at the Treasure Eatery. If the player places the correct order, Larry will accept a battle against them.
The possible answers for the secret menu item are as follows (the correct answers are written in bold):
Like the other Paldean Gyms, there are Trainers present. Unlike those Gyms, however, the ones fought here are not local Gym Trainers, but other Naranja AcademyS/Uva AcademyV students who are also attempting to challenge Larry.
Medali Gym appeared in Dance, Quaxly! The Blue Medali Step!, where Liko, Roy, and Dot visited it for Dot's second Tera Training test. While Larry was away from the Gym when the group visited it, they later found him at the Treasure Eatery, where Larry formally introduced himself and agreed to battle Dot at a battlefield that was revealed to be located at the restaurant. During the test, Dot used her Tinkatink in battle for the first time and her Quaxly unexpectedly evolved into Quaxwell. Despite this, however, Dot ultimately lost the battle, but Larry still approved her performance and usage of Terastallization in a battle with two Pokémon, allowing Dot to pass the test.
Dudunsparce is Larry's third known Pokémon. It was used during Dot's Tera Training test, where it faced both Quaxly and Tinkatink. It was able to gain the upper hand on Quaxly when it paralyzed him with Glare. It then battled Tinkatink before being recalled in favor of Staraptor after their attacks seemed evenly matched.
Staraptor is Larry's fourth known Pokémon. It was used to battle Tinkatink and Quaxly during Dot's Tera Training test battle, where it was swapped in to replace of Dudunsparce and quickly defeated Tinkatink. Despite receiving major damage from Dot's newly evolved Quaxwell, it was still able to defeat him after Terastallizing while Quaxwell was immobilized by paralysis.
Medali Gym first appeared in PASV20. Upon meeting Violet, Larry wanted to gauge his strength to determine if the rumors of him having defeated three Titan Pokémon already were true. Although Violet didn't want to waste time in battling Larry, the Gym Leader refused to let him leave and took him to the Gym, where Violet was explained the Gym mission. After clearing the mission, Violet fought Larry at the battlefield located within the Treasure Eatery. Thanks to the TM moves he had taught to his Pokémon, Violet was able to win, prompting Larry to reward him with a Gym Badge and declare that the tales about his strength were not exaggerated.
In PASV23, Geeta invited Nemona to join her and the Elite Four for an urgent meeting at the Medali Gym, where she arrived in PASV25. Geeta and the Elite Four questioned Nemona on what she knew about Scarlet, with Nemona telling them everything she knew and how Scarlet needed Miraidon to be at full power and was thus helping Violet in fighting the Titan Pokémon. Hearing this, Geeta told Nemona that she would personally like to encourage Scarlet to continue challenging Gyms, which Nemona was happy to hear and agreed to tell Scarlet when she could. Behind Nemona's back, Geeta intended to use this as an opportunity to continue monitoring Scarlet, planning to inform the rest of the Paldean Gym Leaders about this.
Komala is Larry's first known Pokémon. It was first used to prevent Violet from escaping his battle with Larry by hitting Miraidon with its saliva, instantly making it fall asleep. Later, it was used to battle against Violet's Lokix but lost.
Dudunsparce is Larry's third known Pokémon. It was Larry's second choice in his battle with Violet. After defeating Violet's Lokix, it went up against his Smoliv, who covered its body in oil to make Dudunsparce's moves slip off, reducing the damage they dealt. Dudunsparce put Smoliv to sleep, only for it to retaliate with a Sleep Talk-Flail combination, knocking Dudunsparce out.
Staraptor is Larry's second known Pokémon. It was first used to forcibly carry Violet and Arven to the Medali Gym so the former could register for his battle with Larry. Later, it was Larry's third choice in his battle with Violet. Despite being Terastallized to remove its weakness to Rock-type moves, Staraptor fell after Violet turned his Clodsire into a Rock-type to make its Rock Slide stronger.
