Habitat

Wynaut is only found on Mirage Island, where it is the sole species. It is unknown why Wynaut only appear there. Mirage island is also the only place the Liechi Berry is found naturally. This leads to the theory that they need to feed on the Leichi Berry to survive in the wild.

In the anime

Wynaut first appeared in Camp Pikachu. This Bright Pokémon helped Pikachu and co. help the Pichu Brothers get to the next train to Big Town.

Wynaut also appeared during the Blackthorn City arc (Beauty is Skin Deep - Why? Wynaut!), But Jessie's Wobbuffet, Ash's Bayleef and Ash's Noctowl were the only ones to see it.

In Who, What, When, Where, Wynaut?, a plan of Team Rocket's backfires and sends everyone to Mirage Island. The only inhabitants of this island are none other than Wynaut.

Trivia

  • Wynaut is the baby Pokémon that evolves by level the earliest, at 15, while most other baby Pokémon that evolve by level all evolve at level 30.
  • By appearing on Mirage Island in Generation III, Wynaut is the first baby Pokémon found in the wild in the games, while the others later would do the same in Generation IV.

Origin

Name origin

Wynaut's name is pronounced identically to phrase "why not?" Its Japanese name is almost homophonous with the word そうなの sō na no, which means "really?" The French name seems to be based on a repitition of "Okay." The German name may be a corruption of "It's so."

Its name, when paired with the Japanese name of its evolution, Wobbuffet, ソーナンス Sonans, makes for a potential perpetual conversation of "really?" followed by "that's the way it is," and so on, as seen in Camp Pikachu.
