If you were looking for the mark on a Pokémon's status screen that indicates which game it came from, see Origin mark.

A mark (Japanese: あかし mark) is a special marking that a Pokémon can have when caught in Pokémon Sword and Shield and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Marks are shown on the Pokémon's summary screen and grant a particular title to the Pokémon that is shown when it is sent out in battle, like Ribbons.

Generation VIII

Availability

Wild Pokémon may have marks when encountered in a random encounter (including fishing) or symbol encounter. Additionally, Pokémon that join while cooking curry at Pokémon Camp will always have the Curry Mark. It is impossible for a Pokémon to gain a mark through any other means, it must be initially obtained with the mark.

Pokémon originating from the following sources can never generate with, or obtain marks in Generation VIII:

Some Legendary Pokémon, namely the Swords of Justice in the Crown Tundra, and Galarian forms of the Legendary birds, appear in the overworld as symbol encounters rather than static or scripted encounters, and therefore can generate with marks.

Mechanics

Depending on conditions, there is an approximately 1/19.9 to 1/3.5 chance[1] that a Pokémon encountered in the wild will have a mark.

When a Pokémon is encountered in the wild, the game checks whether to apply a mark to it, using the following rates in the following order:[2]

Category Chance of success
(if previous check fails)
Rare Mark #69 1/1000
Personality Marks
#70 through #97
1/100
Uncommon Mark #68 1/50
Weather Marks
#57 through #64
1/50
Time Marks
#53 through #56
1/50
Fishing Mark #66 1/25

That is, first, the game determines if the Pokémon will have a Rare Mark. If that test fails, it checks the Rowdy - Slump Mark group. If that fails, it checks Uncommon Mark, and so on.

As examples, in clear weather, with no Mark Charm, and if not fishing, the overall probability of having any mark is ; if fishing during non-clear weather, the overall probability is .

If a Personality Mark (Rowdy - Slump Mark group) is chosen, the marks within that group all have an even chance of being selected (1/28 each, relative to each other). If a weather-based mark is chosen and the weather is not clear, the mark corresponding to the weather will be given; if the weather is clear, the game will continue checking the following types of marks. If a time-based mark is chosen, the mark corresponding to the current time will be chosen.

If the player has the Mark Charm in their Bag, wild Pokémon are more likely to have a mark. If a wild Pokémon would not have a mark while the player has the Mark Charm, the game runs through these checks a second and third time.[3]

The Mark Charm gives +2 rolls for a Pokémon to generate with a mark, so the chance is the sum of getting it on 1st roll, 2nd roll, and 3rd roll. Each roll checks all categories above, and only proceeds to the next roll if no mark succeeded:

  • Chance of getting a mark on the 1st roll is exactly same as having no Mark Charm. The 2nd and 3rd rolls do not occur if a mark succeeds here.
  • Chance of getting a mark on the 2nd roll is chance of "no mark on 1st roll x chance of getting it on 2nd roll". The 3rd roll does not occur if a mark succeeds here.
  • Chance of getting a mark on the third roll is chance of "no mark on the 1st and 2nd rolls x chance of getting it on 3rd roll".

The weather-based marks and the Fishing Mark are the only random marks that are not part of a group that is always possible (specifically, when the weather is clear or when encountering a Pokémon other than by fishing). This affects the overall chance of encountering a wild Pokémon with a mark, since each chance is separate (as opposed to choosing whether any mark will be received, and then choosing the mark).

Generation IX

Marks, and their respective titles, are present in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Pokémon transferred into Scarlet or Violet from Pokémon Sword and Shield via Pokémon HOME will retain any marks and titles associated with them.

Availability

Wild Pokémon, excluding fixed symbol encounters, may have a mark when caught.

Most marks previously available in Sword and Shield are available, with similar chances to be obtained under the listed conditions[4][5], excluding the Curry, Fishing, Dry, and Misty Marks, due to their corresponding mechanics not existing in Scarlet and Violet. Additionally, the Destiny Mark, which was found in the assets of Sword and Shield but never made available, is available on wild Pokémon on the player's birthday in Scarlet and Violet.[6][7]

Pokémon originating from the following sources can never generate with, or obtain "naturally generating" marks in Scarlet and Violet:

Additionally, there are a few other conditions for certain encounter types and marks:

  • Wild Tera Pokémon cannot obtain normal marks, but are more likely to have access to the Jumbo Mark due to their Scale always generating between 200 and 255, rather than 0 to 255. This also makes them ineligible for the Mini Mark, as their Scale will never be 0.[8]
    • The formula used is Scale = 200 + rand56, giving it a flat 1/56 chance for the value to be 255.
  • Titan Pokémon always generate with the Titan Mark, but cannot obtain normal marks. They always have a Scale of 255, and are therefore guaranteed to have access to the Jumbo Mark, but can never have the Mini Mark.[9]
  • Humungo Power, Teensy Power, and Title Power from Sandwiches have no effect on Tera Raid Battles, fixed symbol encounters such as Wild Tera Pokémon, Titan Pokémon, Eggs, gifts, in-game trades, and static encounters such as Gimmighoul or Legendaries.
  • The Partner and Gourmand marks can be earned by any Pokémon, regardless if it already has a naturally generating mark, they do not generate naturally on wild Pokémon. Likewise, the Jumbo and Mini marks can also be earned if a Pokémon has a Scale value of 255 or 0 respectively, regardless of whether it already has a naturally generating mark.

Scarlet and Violet introduce several new marks, notably the Jumbo, Mini, Itemfinder, Partner, Gourmand, Alpha, Mightiest, and Titan Marks.[10][11]

Mechanics

Mechanics have two notable differences compared to Sword and Shield:

  • Sandwiches may grant the "Title Power" bonus, increasing the odds for wild Pokémon to spawn with a mark/title. Title Power essentially replaces the Mark Charm, (which despite being programmed into Scarlet and Violet is not obtainable in-game), with each level of Title Power granting an additional roll for a Mark, up to 4 rolls for Title Power Lv. 3.
    • Sandwiches may also grant the "Humungo Power" or "Teensy Power" bonuses, which affect the probability of a Pokémon generating with a Scale value that would make them eligible to receive the Jumbo and Mini marks, respectively.
  • Mark groupings are no longer checked and rolled for in a descending order. This means that when no Title Power is applied, the rate of each Mark is exactly as stated, and marks of similar base rarity always have the same rarity even with Title Power, (such as Time, Weather, and Uncommon mark groups, which all share a base rarity of 1/50).

Trivia

  • Since Pokémon hatched from Eggs or caught in a Max Raid Battle cannot have a mark, the only way for a Pokémon to have both a Hidden Ability and a mark in Sword and Shield is to use an Ability Patch.
    • This is no longer the case in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as Hidden Abilities can be obtained without the Ability Patch from some encounters such as Tera Raid Battles, and some marks can be earned after a Pokémon has already been obtained, such as the Gourmand Mark via making sandwiches.
  • Weather-related marks in Sword, Shield, Scarlet, and Violet are granted based on the current weather where the player character is located, not where the Pokémon itself is located, and the type of weather mark granted is determined when the symbol encounter is generated, not when it enters battle, nor when it is caught. Due to this, it is possible for Pokémon to generate with weather marks based on the weather in adjacent locations, if they were generated when the player was in an adjacent zone with different weather conditions. This can even allow Pokémon to have marks corresponding to weather that can never occur in the location in which they are found.[16]
    • An example would be Kantonian Sandshrew encountered in Sword and Shield. Kantonian Sandshrew can only be found as a wild Pokémon in Warm-Up Tunnel, a location that can only have clear weather, which doesn't have a corresponding weather mark. Standing nearby in the Training Lowlands during rain would allow Sandshrew to generate inside the tunnel with the Rainy Mark despite the Sandshrew itself being located in an area with no weather.
  • Despite Hassel mentioning the Itemfinder Mark as being obtainable during one of his art classes, no logic appears to exist in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet to grant the mark. This bug remains the case as of v1.1.0 of Scarlet and Violet.
  • The Partner Mark is the only mark that becomes automatically equipped to display its title at the moment it is earned.
