<!-- Detailed synopsis goes here. -->
The gang is on their way back to Ecruteak City to get to Mahogany Town. On their way down a hill, a couple of a milk cans start to roll down. They break into a run until someone says to catch them, so they stop and grab the milk cans. They carry the cans up towards a truck driver who asks where they're going. Since the gang helped out with the cans, the driver says he'll give them a ride along the route to a destination more closer to Ecruteak. They get to an airport with a blimp waiting. Team Rocket is later spying on them, seeing if there would be a way inside the blimp. They sneak onto the cargo hold and look around. They come to a freezer and decide to go in, (who'd be stupid enough to do that?) except the door latch closes on them when they go in. After a while, they notice the door's stuck, and by the time they knock it down, they're frozen. And since the blimp makes another assent, down they go.

After they land, Ash gives Oak a call at a nearby rest house, except no one's there when he calls. Mr. Mime pops up eventually then Ash's mom. Ash wonders what's going on and then Oak and Tracey come into the scene. It looks like they're having a little problem with the Pokémon in the area. The Oddish/Glooms/Vileplumes/Bellosoms, the Hopips/Skiplooms/Jumpluffs, and a group of water Pokémon won't cooperate to share a lake with each other. Oak suggests that he should send Bulbasaur to them, maybe he can help out. Ash does so and hopes that Bulbasaur could solve this problem or two.

Plot
Ash and ashfr are on their way up a hill when a couple of milk cans start to roll towards them. They break into a sprint until someone calls out to them, and soon they stop the runaway cans. The group helps load them back into the man's vehicle. He asks where they are headed, and upon hearing that they are going to Ecruteak City he offers to drive them part of the way.
They arrive at an airport, and their escort, Carter, says it will get them to the Moomoo Ranch near Ecruteak City. While they wait for their tickets, Ash calls Professor Oak's Laboratory. On the other side, however, are Mimey and Delia. Tracey and Professor Oak appear onscreen and then Oak explains that the many wild Pokémon that live in his lab’s sprawling gardens have recently had trouble. A group of migrating Hoppip, Skiploom and Jumpluff decided to stop at Oak’s gardens, but this ignited a territorial squabble with the resident Oddish line and then the Water Pokémon. Oak asks Ash if he could send over his Bulbasaur to act as the peacemaker, given its history with Melanie. Bulbasaur happily accepts the task, so Ash transfers it directly to the Professor. The call ends, and Oak greets Bulbasaur as it arrives.

Tracey, Oak, and Bulbasaur set off to the place. Along the way, Heracross comes by happily and yet again licks the bulb off on Bulbasaur, except Bulbasaur gets even by slapping Heracross with a few Vine Whips. They get there and Bulbasaur rushes up to the three gangs of Pokémon. He decides to talk them into being friendly, but that don't work. Bulbasaur then tries to put a Bellosom in front of a Hopip, but instead gets slapped by the Bellosom. Bulbasaur tries a Hopip in front of a Poliwhirl, but gets Tackled by the Hopip and slapped by the Poliwhirl. This continues on until all three gangs turn in on Bulbasaur and start one of those cartoony fights. Tracey tries to help by sending out his Pokémon but the fight ends up with Bulbasaur releasing a Solar Beam straight up into the sky. For some reason, all the grass Pokémon now respect him and each other.
Carter and the group enter the waiting blimp, and TRT decide to sneak aboard as well. The trio enters through the cargo hold but finds it to be a little stuffy. MTR points out a mysterious door, and it turns out to be a freezer room. The trio happily enters, seeking refuge from the heat, though the door latches shut behind them and effectively traps them in.

After the quarrel was solved, Bulbasaur decided to get to work. Oak and Tracey stand by to watch, Tracey taping the whole event. He showed the grass types a blank field, then cut the grass to make a patch of barren land, and started to dig up the sand. The others got the idea and started to dig in the non-grassy area. After a while, Bulbasaur hit something hard, it looks like he can't dig much further than that. Bulbasaur runs off towards the Poliwhirl from before. The Poliwhirl declines for a while, but Bulbasaur presists, eventually the Poliwhirl agrees. Bulbasaur later talks with a Sandslash, the Sandslash also agrees to help out with the problem. (and both have a posse of their own)
Tracey, Oak, and Bulbasaur set off to the lake. Along the way, Heracross flies in and makes a beeline for Bulbasaur's bulb. He begins suckling for nectar, resulting in Bulbasaur Vine Whipping Heracross. After arriving, Bulbasaur rushes into the three-way conflict and tries to negotiate with each of the parties. However, its negotiation attempts fail, as the three fronts turn on Bulbasaur and go on to attack it. Tracey sends his three Pokémon to end the fight, and Heracross enters as well. Though the fight ends when Bulbasaur releases a blinding Solar Beam straight into the sky. Stunned, all the Grass Pokémon learn to respect Bulbasaur and each other. They exchange a "peace dance" to commemorate their new truce, and Tracey films the entire exchange. However, the Water-types are still feeling uneasy towards the Grass Pokémon.

Soon all the Pokémon is working on getting the lake. Ash's mom and Mr. Mime come by later, both with bags of Pokémon food for the Pokémon. Later one the Sandslashes encounters a boulder in the ground. Once they exposed enough of it, Bulbasaurd goes first in getting it out of there. After a while, all the other Pokémon start to help out Bulbasaur. The boulder soon is carried out and everyone resumes their work. Soon enough, the Sandslash start scattering becuase they hit the ground water. The hole soon fills up with water and the lake is successful. The ground loosens and falls where an Oddish by the boulder were. The boulder is just about the land on the Oddish but Bulbasaur pushes it out of the way... except Bulbasaur can't get out! (and there's a flashback of the things that happened with Bulbasaur)
The group's blimp arrives at Moomoo Ranch. Carter bids Ash and his friends a farewell as he drives off. Soon, Team Rocket break open the blimp’s fridge door but emerges frozen. As the blimp takes off again, the Rocket trio slides out of a hatch door and plummets towards the ground. Later, Oak updates Ash that he will need Bulbasaur for a while longer as the Water Pokémon continue to fight with the Grass-types. Tracey adds that a new grass field will be constructed, but this will take some time to complete. Ash agrees to leave Bulbasaur at the lab, thanking the category for helping the Professor out.

Later in a field, Ash gets up from a nap they were taking in a field. He looks towards the clouds and senses only that Bulbasaur is doing good.
The Professor, Tracey, and Bulbasaur venture out into the field once again. Tracey calls on his Tracey's assistance, and it soon finds a potential underground spring. Bulbasaur calls out, and its booming cry summons all of the Grass-types over. Bulbasaur announces to them that this site will be their new home. It promptly sends out a Razor Leaf to cut an outline of the new lake and uses its vines to dig it out. The Grass Pokémon begin to dig into the ground. Bulbasaur soon hits a tough rock layer. It isn’t giving up though, and it runs off to gather the perfect team; a group of Poliwhirl and Sandslash. The choice puzzles the Professor and Tracey. They watch in amazement as the Poliwhirl soften the bedrock with their Water Gun attacks, while the Sandslash Dig into the ground. Delia and Mimey later arrive to deliver lunch for the hardworking Pokémon. Work soon grinds to a halt after one of the Sandslash uncovers a giant boulder wedged into the ground. Bulbasaur lassos its vines around the obstacle and the other Pokémon help it to pull the rock out of the way. Tracey considers helping the Pokémon out, but Oak and Delia remind him that the project has brought all of the once warring Pokémon to collaborate. The boulder eventually gives way allowing Bulbasaur and the others to finally heave it out. The Sandslash suddenly rush out of the pit before the underground water begins to fill it. As the Pokémon cheer, the ground collapses underneath an Oddish and the giant boulder. Bulbasaur jumps into action and manages to throw Oddish to safety.

Oak and Tracey push the boulder into the flooded area, but Bulbasaur is nowhere to be seen. Everyone starts to wonder what happened to him, but then Bulbasaur pops out from the ground, alright and rarin' to go!
Instead, Bulbasaur finds itself in the rolling boulder's path. Time appears to slow down and everyone watches the unfolding scene in horror. An almighty smash sound is heard, and Bulbasaur reflects on its life. Ash awakens from a daytime nap and looks into the sky, seeing the clouds, thinking about his Bulbasaur. Meanwhile, Oak and Tracey manage to push the rock into the growing lake. They scour the area, but Bulbasaur is nowhere to be seen. Oak calls out. Everyone gasps when Bulbasaur emerges from the dirt, seemingly unscathed. It jumps up the escarpment and shakes itself clean of the muck. The Grass types are thrilled to have their hero and throw Bulbasaur into the air several times as a show of gratitude. Tracey marvels that Bulbasaur cannot usually learn the move Dig, but Oak notes that in times of need, it is possible to call upon power never known to it previously.

Ash gives Oak a call again to see how things are going. It looks like Bulbasaur was a great help, but just one thing, it looks like he's wanted there to keep things in check. Ash asks if that's okay with Bulbasaur if he stays and Bulbasaur says "yes". Later the Bulbasaur solves another conflict going on and looks at the sky, knowing Ash is gonna do good.
Oak calls Ash and his friends again for another update. Ash is glad to see that Bulbasaur helped restore the peace back at the lab. The Professor asks Ash for another favor; for Bulbasaur to remain at the lab a while longer. Ash is initially sad, but Bulbasaur offers him some reassurances. With that, the decision is made that Bulbasaur will remain at Professor Oak's lab. Ash wishes Bulbasaur good luck with its new responsibilities before continuing on his journey through Johto. Bulbasaur soon begins its new duties in Kanto. After breaking up a squabble between a Gloom and a Skiploom over an apple, Bulbasaur looks up to the sky, thinking of Ash and knowing he'll be just fine.

Trivia
* Ash's Bulbasaur learned Dig in this episode, a move that Bulbasaur cannot normally learn. This fact is even mentioned by Tracey. Professor Oak then points out that it was able to use the move because it acted in a crisis.
* This episode is featured on Volume 7: Bulbasaur from Viz Media's Pokémon All-Stars series.
* This episode marks the last appearance of Tracey's Venonat, as well as that of his Tracey in the main series, until The Rainbow and the Pokémon Master!, 1,007 episodes later.
* In this episode, Caterpie's mouth was yellow during a flashback to Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village, despite officially being changed to green in Wings 'N' Things. This is probably because that episode aired long before Caterpie's mouth changed from yellow to green.
* As of this episode, all of Ash's Kanto Pokémon except Pikachu have been either released, left in training, or sent to Professor Oak's Laboratory.
* Team Rocket does not recite their motto in this episode.

Ash gets a surprise request from Professor Oak: it seems to Pokémon in the Professor's laboratory have taken to fighting amongst themselves, all of the Professor's attempts to stop them ending in failure. Sure enough it isn't long after Bulbasaur's arrival that peace returns to the laboratory, but will the same endure even after Bulbasaur leaves? Plot

Ash and his friends are on their way up a hill when a couple of milk cans start to roll towards them. They break into a sprint until someone calls out to them, and soon they stop the runaway cans. The group helps load them back into the man's vehicle. He asks where they are headed, and upon hearing that they are going to Ecruteak City he offers to drive them part of the way.

On the other side, however, are Mimey and Delia. Tracey and Professor Oak appear onscreen and then Oak explains that the many wild Pokémon that live in his lab’s sprawling gardens have recently had trouble. A group of migrating Hoppip, Skiploom and Jumpluff decided to stop at Oak’s gardens, but this ignited a territorial squabble with the resident Oddish line and then the Water-type Pokémon. Oak asks Ash if he could send over his Bulbasaur to act as the peacemaker, given its history with Melanie. Bulbasaur happily accepts the task, so Ash transfers it directly to the Professor. The call ends, and Oak greets Bulbasaur as it arrives.

Carter and the group enter the waiting blimp, and Team Rocket decide to sneak aboard as well. The trio enters through the cargo hold but finds it to be a little stuffy. Meowth points out a mysterious door, and it turns out to be a freezer room. The trio happily enters, seeking refuge from the heat, though the door latches shut behind them and effectively traps them in.

Ash agrees to leave Bulbasaur at the lab, thanking the Seed Pokémon for helping the Professor out.

The Professor, Tracey, and Bulbasaur venture out into the field once again. Tracey calls on his Marill's assistance, and it soon finds a potential underground spring.

Dub edits

 • An instrumental of You Can Do It (If You Really Try) is used as the background music in the dubbed version of Bulbasaur's flashback montage. In the original Japanese version, the melancholy song used in previous goodbye episodes played in the background.
