Rhyperior first appeared as a wild Rhydon in Rock, Paper...Scizor, rampaging near the Viridian Gym along with an Alakazam, an Arcanine, and an Exeggutor due to the Pokémon League music that was being played in a radio. Seeing that they needed to be stopped, Blue used his Blue to defeat the rampaging Pokémon, which he then caught, impressing the Pokémon Association so much that they decided to appoint him as the new Gym Leader of Viridian Gym.

It, along with an Alakazam, an Arcanine, and an Exeggutor, rampaged near the Viridian City after being attracted by the sound of the Pokémon March being played by a Pokémon Association van's radio. Blue used his Blue to defeat the rampaging Pokémon, which he then caught. The Pokémon Association were impressed so much that they decided to appoint him as the new Gym Leader of Viridian Gym.

During the Gym Leader Exhibition match at the Indigo Plateau, where Blue faced his former mentor, Chuck, he decided to restrict his use of Pokémon to Rhydon only. At first, Rhydon faced Chuck's Machamp. Although Rhydon managed to hit Machamp with Horn Attack, it proved to be a part of Chuck's strategy, as he then hit Rhydon with Vital Throw, which has a 100% hit rate in exchange for a decreased priority. After this Chuck switched to Hitmonlee, which used Mind Reader to easily dodge all of Rhydon's attacks. Although Rhydon managed to eventually strike Hitmonlee with Stomp, the hit was proven to be taken on purpose again, as the Kicking Pokémon then attacked the Drill Pokémon with Reversal, which became more powerful after Hitmonlee had been weakened. Chuck then once again switched his Pokémon, now sending out Hitmontop. Trying to seek an optimal moment to hit the opponent, Blue had Rhydon destabilize the ground with Earthquake. However, Hitmontop just took an advantage of the situation, escaping into the air before striking Rhydon with its head spike. When Hitmontop prepared for another strike, Blue recalled the lessons he had learned from Chuck, feeling the movements and connecting those feelings to his Pokémon. Using this as his advantage, Blue had Rhydon cancel out Hitmontop's spin and attack it with Horn Drill, defeating the Handstand Pokémon and winning the battle for Blue. After the battle, Blue revealed Chuck that he had chosen to use Rhydon alone because after being appointed as the Leader of Viridian Gym, he had discovered a secret guide hidden in there, labeled Secrets of the Land and written by Giovanni, who had been a Ground specialist. Seeing that he was the new Leader of the Gym, Blue explained that he felt that he should decode the guide and master the techniques it described.

Rhydon first went up against Chuck's Machamp, which let Rhydon hit first so that it could use Vital Throw, which always makes the user go last. Next, Chuck switched Machamp with his Hitmonlee, which used Mind Reader to dodge Rhydon's attacks. Rhydon managed to grab Hitmonlee's stretchy legs and attacked with Stomp, only to be countered with Reversal. Chuck then switched Hitmonlee for a Hitmontop, which greatly damaged Rhydon with its ability to attack multiple times while spinning. Eventually, Chuck had Hitmontop attack from the air by using its horn as a drill. Rhydon countered with its own Horn Drill and caused Hitmontop to slow down by reversing the rotation of its drill, leading to Hitmontop's defeat and Blue's victory. After the battle, Blue revealed he trained Rhydon to a high level with a book titled Secret Earth Arts, which was written by Giovanni, who had been a Ground specialist.

Having no time to explain the situation, Silver battled the three Gym Leaders in order to force his way into the Gym. Blue's Rhyperior (Japanese: グリーンドサイドン Green's Dosidon) is one of the Pokémon that Blue owns in the Pokémon Adventures manga. As of All About Arceus III, he is at level 81, has a Mild nature, and his Characteristic is "proud of its power."

History

As a Rhydon, with Blue
Activating Lightning Rod as a Rhydon

Rhyperior first appeared as a wild Rhydon in Rock, Paper...Scizor. It, along with an Alakazam, an Arcanine, and an Exeggutor, rampaged near the Viridian City after being attracted by the sound of the Pokémon March being played by a Pokémon Association van's radio. Blue used his Scizor to defeat the rampaging Pokémon, which he then caught. The Pokémon Association were impressed so much that they decided to appoint him as the new Gym Leader of Viridian Gym.

During the Gym Leader exhibition match at the Indigo Plateau, Blue faced his former mentor, Chuck. During this battle, Blue only used Rhydon. After the battle, Blue revealed he trained Rhydon to a high level with a book titled Secret Earth Arts, which was written by the previous Viridian Gym Leader, who had been a Ground-type specialist.

Later, Blue used Rhydon to dig a tunnel to Ilex Forest so that he and Red can help their allies confront the Masked Man.

In the FireRed & LeafGreen arc, Blue used Rhydon to battle Red to determine which one would learn one of the ultimate moves from Ultima. With its Lightning Rod, Rhydon redirected the Electric attacks fired by Pika to prevent them from hitting Machamp. Later, Rhydon was used to battle Orm on Six Island. With its drills, Rhydon broke the horde of Shuckle Orm was using to keep Blue pinned down. Near the end of the fifth chapter, Rhydon was used to help slow the descent of the Team Rocket battleship to prevent its crash-landing into Vermilion City.

In the HeartGold & SoulSilver arc, it was revealed that Blue and Silver traded Pokémon. With the Protector he received from Silver, Blue's Rhydon evolved into a Rhyperior. Afterward, Blue gave Rhyperior to Silver so that it may fill the missing slot in his party. Rhyperior was first used to battle Ariana on Route 38. With an Earth Plate-boosted Earth Power, it distracted Ariana long enough for Silver to escape and head to Ecruteak City to meet with Morty. When Silver arrived at the Gym, he was stopped by Falkner, Bugsy, and Chuck, who were protecting the Gym from suspicious people under Morty's request. Having no time to explain the situation, Silver battled the three Gym Leaders in order to force his way into the Gym. Chuck used his Hitmontop to battle against Rhyperior, but the two Pokémon stopped when their drills collided, making both realize that they fought each other. After Silver explained who Rhyperior originally belonged to, Chuck decided to trust Silver and allowed him into the Gym.

Later at the Sinjoh Ruins, Silver used Rhyperior to battle Giratina to protect his father. Silver then revealed that he decoded Giovanni's book, which allowed him to teach Rhyperior Rock Wrecker.

In the X & Y arc, it is revealed that Silver returned Rhyperior to Blue. Rhyperior is first seen helping Diantha emerge from underground, where she was put in order to escape the blast of the ultimate weapon.

In the games

In the original Generation I games and their remakes, Blue uses a Rhydon in the Champion battle. He also uses Rhydon in the Gym battle during the Generation II games and their remakes, as well as the Round 1 battle of Pokémon Stadium 2. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it has evolved into a Rhyperior by the time of the rematch. Rhydon does not appear during the FireRed and LeafGreen rematches, instead being replaced by Tyranitar.
