This page details the Pokémon that are first available or choosable in various games in the franchise.

Core series games

Player's first Pokémon

At the start of most core series Pokémon games, the player can choose from one of three Pokémon: a Grass-type Pokémon, a Fire-type Pokémon, and a Water-type Pokémon. These Pokémon are generally rare in other games. The following table shows the Pokémon that are choosable at the start of each core series game, and which other games they can also be obtained in.

Pokémon Colosseum

In Pokémon Colosseum, Wes starts with two Pokémon, since most battles in the game are Double Battles.

Pokémon XD

In Pokémon XD, Michael starts with an Eevee who he is later able to evolve into Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, or Umbreon.

Pokémon Battle Revolution

In Pokémon Battle Revolution, the player's first Pokémon are determined by the gender they specified on their Rental Pass or Custom Pass.

Pokémon Masters EX

In Pokémon Masters EX, in the main story, Scottie/Bettie starts with a Pikachu.

Pokémon GO

In Pokémon GO, when the player first starts the game, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle will appear nearby and the player can battle and catch one of them. The player can walk away from them and they will reappear later. After walking away four times, Pikachu will also appear.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, the player character is a Pokémon. Classically, the player chooses their character by a quiz, but in the Adventure Squad games and Gates to Infinity, the character can be chosen manually; in later games, it can be chosen by either method. After choosing their character, the player also chooses a partner from the remaining Pokémon, so long as it is not the same type as the player. Up until Explorers of Sky, the partner can only be selected from first partner Pokémon or Pikachu.

In Red and Blue Rescue Team, Meowth, Machop, and Cyndaquil are only available to male players, while Eevee, Chikorita, and Skitty are only available to female players.

First Pokémon in Explorers of Time and Darkness:

In Explorers of Sky, Phanpy, Shinx, and Riolu are only available to male players, while Vulpix, Eevee, and Skitty are only available to female players.

In the Adventure Squad games, the available starting Pokémon differ depending on the game.

Pokémon Ranger series

In Pokémon Ranger, the player's first Pokémon depends on their gender: female player characters get Plusle, while male player characters get Minun.

In Shadows of Almia, the player can choose one of the following Pokémon for their first partner.

In Guardian Signs, the player's first partner is a special Pichu.

Pokémon Rumble series

In the Pokémon Rumble games, the player controls Toy Pokémon.

In Pokémon Rumble, the player immediately starts in a Battle Royale controlling a Rattata.

In Pokémon Rumble Blast, the player starts in Beginner's Park with a Pikachu.

In Pokémon Rumble U, the player first enters Dream Gate and takes control of a Pikachu, with Tepig, Oshawott, and Snivy fighting alongside them.

In Pokémon Rumble World, the player starts with a Pikachu lent to them by the king to explore the King's Training Field.

In Pokémon Rumble Rush, the player is first given a Rattata to practice with in a tutorial area.

PokéPark series

In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, the player plays as a Pikachu for the whole game.

In PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond, the player starts out as a Pikachu, but can later switch to Snivy, Tepig, or Oshawott.

Pokémon Conquest

In Pokémon Conquest, the player starts off in Aurora as the newest Warlord, with their partner Eevee.

Pokédex 3D

In Pokédex 3D, all players begin with the following Pokémon.
