Route 103 is an east-west route located in western Hoenn. Its eastern terminus is at Route 110 near the Trick House north of Slateport City. The western terminus is at the northern edge of Oldale Town. The route is the second route traversed by trainers in Generation III, though on first encounter, only the western portion of the route is accessible.
The route is often used as a shortcut between Littleroot Town and the rest of western Hoenn to Mauville City and central and eastern Hoenn. In this regard, Route 103 is similar to the Rusturf Tunnel between Route 116 and Verdanturf Town.
Route description
Eastern side
Heading west from Route 110, Route 103 passes an opening in a forest blocked by a Cut-able tree that leads to a pair of items and a loamy soil patch containing two varieties of Berries. Just west of the passage is the first trainer on the route. Continuing west on the path, Route 103 leads into the path of three more trainers, two of which partake in a double battle, before turning northeast and opening up on the east side of a river.
The river itself contains an assortment of wild Pokémon as well as two Swimmers looking to do battle. The path that Route 103 takes across the water body is directly east-west, allowing trainers to quickly traverse the channel.
Western side
On the west side of the river are three patches of grass containing more wild Pokémon. The route, from the east, avoids these patches, heading west from the river bank before hopping a ledge west of a grass patch and traveling south into Oldale. From Oldale, it is necessary to travel through a patch of grass to circumvent the ledge and reach the river.
Due to the route's location, it has become a popular training spot for trainers, especially the Rival from Littleroot, who is first seen and battled here.
In Pokémon Emerald, the forest is slightly larger, contains an extra item and is home to two trainers.
After the Elite Four is defeated in Emerald, Altering Cave can be accessed on the bank of the water.
