Whirlpool (Japanese: うずしお Whirl Tide) is a damage-dealing Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation II. It was the first HM move to lose its HM status, and was later followed by Flash and Dive.
Effect
Generation II
In battle
Whirlpool inflicts damage and traps the target in a whirlpool for 2-5 turns, damaging them slightly at the end of each turn.
Outside of battle
Whirlpool clears whirlpools in the field.
Generation III and on
Whirlpool inflicts damage and traps the target in a whirlpool for 2-5 turns, damaging them slightly at the end of each turn.
Generation IV
If the user of Whirlpool is holding a Grip Claw, the duration of Whirlpool is always 5 turns.

Pokémon
Piplup glows a blue-white color. It then opens it mouth and a huge Whirlpool is released from it.
- Used by Dawn's Piplup from Getting the Pre-Contest Titters to present.
Lugia Whilst swimming at the bottom of the ocean, Lugia's eyes glow white, and a large whirlpool forms around it's body. Lugia ascends through the whirlpool, breaking the surface and attacks its foes, or if not attacking, the whirlpool explodes and does a large amount of damage.
- Used by Lugia in The Power of One.
