Each location in the Generation IV games has its own identification number used internally by the game. They are enumerated here, in order.
Met location
When a Pokémon is caught in a Generation IV game, it stores the location index as its met location in its data structure. This data is used to display where a Pokémon was caught on the Summary screen.
When a Pokémon is migrated from Generation III to Generation IV via the Pal Park, its met location is set to Pal Park (index 0x37
). However, this value is ignored, and instead the Pokémon's met location is displayed based on its game of origin: "Hoenn" for Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald; "Kanto" for Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen; and "Distant land" for Pokémon Colosseum and XD. While there are location entries defined for "Hoenn", "Johto", "Kanto" and "Sinnoh", these are not used for Pokémon caught in these respective regions.
In Pokémon Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, both location IDs 0x0000
and 0x07DC
are labeled "Mystery Zone" in non-Japanese games; 0x0000
is used for map IDs, while 0x07DC
is used for Pokémon caught in a Mystery Zone. However, the Mystery Zone cannot be accessed without exploiting glitches, so this is not relevant in normal gameplay.
Unrecognized locations
Each Generation IV game includes all locations from previous Generation IV games, but not any introduced in subsequent games. If a Pokémon is traded to a game that does not recognize its met location, its met location is displayed as "Faraway place" while in that game (e.g. a Pokémon is caught on Route 1 in Pokémon HeartGold traded to Pokémon Diamond will display as being met in a "Faraway place"). Generation IV games do recognize the locations from previous releases, however (e.g. a Pokémon caught on Route 201 in Pokémon Diamond traded to Pokémon HeartGold will still display as being met at "Route 201" in that game).
List
The rows in the table are color-coded as follows:
- Indices in grey debuted in Pokémon Platinum, so are only recognized by Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver.
- Indices in gold debuted in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, so are only recognized by those games.
- Indices in white appear in and are recognized by all games.
