Synopsis
Blurb
May and Harley are about to face each other in the first battle round, May and May against Harley and Harley. Harley goes first with Banette’s Screech and Cacturne’s Bullet Seed, which throws both May’s Pokémon off guard and losing about twenty points. Bulbasaur then uses Vine Whip, Cacturne and Banette both try to dodge it, but Bulbasaur is quick and catches them both by the leg. While they’re both immobile, Beautifly does damage with Silver Wind as well. After that, Bulbasaur throws them both, sending them spinning in circles while Beautifly uses yet another Silver Wind. When they slow down, they wind up Confusion, and Harley lost a little more than half of the entire point bar. Bulbasaur then goes for another Vine Whip, but Banette quickly counters with Torment, not allowing it to repeat its move. Bulbasaur backs off, withdrawing its vines. Cacturne then goes for a Pin Missile, but May has Beautifly quickly sweep down and lift Bulbasaur out of the way. However, Banette’s Will-O-Wisp easily gets them, dropping May's point bar to half. However, while Beautifly does a Petal Dance on Bulbasaur, it somehow pops all of Banette’s blue flames from its last attack! Vivian Meridian and the crowd are pretty impressed with her strategy. As Harley is gradually losing bits of his bar, he tries a last-effort Pin Missile from Cacturne, but fails. Finally, with Bulbasaur still on Beautifly, they use a combo of Silver Wind and Razor Leaf, knocking both opponents out at 1:57 seconds. This round goes to May.

<i>May and Harley face off in the main competition of the Grand Festival! It's Harley's Banette and Cacturne against May's Beautifly and Bulbasaur. May's team gets in the first hits, but Harley makes a comeback and it takes some quick thinking for May to beat Harley and move onto the semifinals.

Harley angrily leaves the hall, sulks into the dressing room and pretends not to notice Drew. But Drew can’t help but comment on Harley getting what he deserved, and that he’s actually going to beat May without having a dirty reputation.
Elsewhere, Jessie wants to impersonate a coordinator and sneak into the competition. Team Rocket decides to kidnap Robert, but Ash interrupts them as they make their move. Snorunt is hit by Team Rocket's Pokémon and evolves into a Glalie! Jessie thinks it's adorable, James thinks it's creepy, but either way, Glalie easily sends them packing.

Team Rocket are planning their next scheme again, so they use James’s laptop to look up the top Coordinator. Sure enough, the closest they could find is Robert, who according to the database has Milotic and Claydol. Then suddenly they see Robert walk out of the hall. MTR quickly fires his net, but Robert is quick and stops it with his bare hands. Just then, Ash comes out of the door with Pikachu and Snorunt, ready for training. Noticing Team Rocket and the net, he orders Pikachu to use Thunderbolt to break the net. As Team Rocket say their Team Rocket, they also complement Robert on his Milotic, but he just laughs knowing what they’re up to. As Team Rocket sends out James and Jessie, Ash decides to finally put Snorunt’s Ice Beam to use. However, it barely comes out. Robert then points out to Ash that Snorunt’s just having a bit of energy shortage from training from the looks of it, so it’s possible that’s why it’s having trouble. Then, Robert goes up and gives Snorunt a bit of consoling about controlling it’s Ice Beam with Ash and Pikachu’s support as well and Meowth’s mockery. Cacnea and Dustox then use Pin Missile and Psybeam which are just about to hit Pikachu, but Snorunt pushes him out of the way and takes the hits instead! Amidst all the smoke and dust from the attack, Snorunt begins to glow and evolves into Glalie! Robert congratulates Ash, and Team Rocket look threatened by Glalie’s angry look. Finally, Robert gives Ash the advice that Glalie are known to be well coordinated, and should have no problem controlling attacks. With that, Ash has Glalie use Ice Beam sending Team Rocket off in a block of ice. Ash hugs Glalie, and thanks Robert for all his help.
Back on the stage, May defeats Anthony's Pinsir and Combusken, but her next opponent will be an even greater challenge: Drew! And Drew has brought a Flygon he trained especially for the competition. Flygon and Roselia are up against Combusken and Skitty. It's a close fight but Roselia hits May's Pokémon with Stun Spore, followed by a Steel Wing from Flygon, and takes the win.

Now May is up against Anthony, and there are thirty seconds left in the battle. May has half her points left, while Anthony has about thirty percent, and it’s Bulbasaur and May against Swalot and Pinsir. Combusken tries to Peck Swalot, but Pinsir (who was hiding under Swalot) gets out and uses its claws to shut Combusken’s beak. But before anyone could make another move, time runs out and since May has more points left, the round is hers.
Now it's Drew and Robert in the finals. To May's surprise, Robert earns the victory and wins the Festival. But Drew isn't upset—that night, even though there's a party, he goes right back to training. Impressed by his example, May sets her sights on next year's Grand Festival!</i>

Back in the room, Anthony congratulates May and thanks Ash and company for helping him with his previous problem. There are about eight trainers left now and to May’s luck, she’s placed against Drew for the quarterfinals! Everyone’s shocked, but she’d have had to face him eventually.
Plot
Harley starts his battle with May by having his Banette use Screech, while his Harley uses Bullet Seed. Both hit their marks and lower May's points. May has May attack with Vine Whip; Harley's Pokémon try to dodge it, but Bulbasaur grabs onto their legs. Beautifly uses Silver Wind that lowers Harley's points. Bulbasaur releases its grip on Cacturne and Banette, which sends them both spinning. Beautifly whips up another Silver Wind, accelerating the spinning and leaving both of Harley's Pokémon dizzy. The dazzling combination earns high praise from the judges as Harley's points fall below half. May calls for Bulbasaur to use Vine Whip again, but Banette counters with Torment, halting the attack cold. Ash is confused why Bulbasaur stopped, leaving Max to explain that Torment blocks your opponent from using the same move twice in a row, leaving Brock to comment that May must now mix things up.

This time May uses Combusken and May, while Drew uses Drew and Drew! Everyone’s surprised because they never knew him to have a Flygon, but Drew says he was saving it specifically for contests, and especially for this battle. As Vivian signals the start, Roselia uses Petal Dance and having Flygon zoom through it. May decides to try her luck with Skitty’s Assist and uses Fire Spin! This stops the petals and distracts Flygon for a bit as well. While Flygon is still airborne, Combusken goes for a Sky Uppercut but Flygon is pretty fast and dodges. With that, Combusken falls over, right on Skitty, with Flygon hovering over them both! Flygon then uses Flamethrower and Roselia uses SolarBeam. As the attacks close in on May’s Pokémon, Ash yells to May to have them dodge it, but instead she has Combusken counter with Fire Spin which cancels both attacks! Both May and Drew lose points, but Drew loses a bit more. May then tries another one of Combusken’s Fire Spins, but Flygon counters with Sandstorm. During the confusion, Skitty aims at Roselia with Blizzard. However, the Sandstorm hits, and Drew uses the same trick May used. Flygon sweeps down and grabs Roselia, taking it out of the way. May’s side takes a lot of damage, now left with about forty percent. Only one minute is left...
Cacturne fires Pin Missile at Bulbasaur, but Beautifly carries Bulbasaur high into the air, leaving Harley's attack a miss. Banette fires Will-O-Wisp, which manages to score a hit on both of May's Pokémon, but Bulbasaur uses Petal Dance, which combines with Will-O-Wisp to create sparkling dust all over the field, costing Harley more points. Cacturne retaliates with another Pin Missile which begins shredding the petals, but Bulbasaur and Beautifly are unharmed, and they retaliate with a Silver Wind and Razor Leaf combination that knocks out both Cacturne and Banette. Harley's points drop to zero as a result, and May moves on to the next stage. As he storms off in defeat, Harley tells Drew that he's probably happy to see him lose to May. Drew responds that May was just better than him, and Harley declares that he will be happy once he sees both of them lose.

Skitty’s Assist this time sends a Vine Whip, which Roselia and Flygon easily dodge. However, she can still make use of it. Having Combusken jump really high, Skitty holds out the vines, and Combusken jumps from the tip right at Flygon! However, back on the ground Roselia tries to distract them with Magical Leaf, but Skitty stops them with Blizzard. Flygon then tries to stop the Blizzard with Flamethrower, but Combusken, still in the air, takes the fire and heads towards Flygon. Engulfed in flames, Combusken goes for a fiery Tackle, hitting Flygon square-on! This stunt gets a lot of attention from the crowd, and even Norman at home. Drew takes a bit more damage. But, it’s not over yet. Combusken and Skitty then use Quick Attack and Tackle, since Drew’s Pokémon have just taken a bit of damage but Roselia stops them both with Stun Spore. While Paralysis, Flygon hits them both with Steel Wing and just as the clock runs out, May has also ran out of points. This round is Drew’s.
Meanwhile, Jessie is still set on becoming Top Coordinator even without any Ribbons. James suggests that Robert is their best chance, and they watch as he steps outside before ambushing him with a rope cannon. Ash arrives and has Pikachu use Thunderbolt to free Robert from the rope. TRT recites their motto before calling out James and Jessie to attack. Snorunt tries to use Ice Beam. but it fails while everyone laughs at it, with James calling it a "Nice Beam". Robert gives Snorunt some encouragement and advises it to focus its energy in its head to be able to aim Ice Beam properly. Cacnea uses Pin Missile and Dustox uses Psybeam towards Pikachu, but Snorunt jumps in front to take the hit and evolves into Glalie. Ash scans Glalie with the Pokédex. James and Meowth are unsettled by Glalie's fierce glare, but Jessie oddly finds Glalie beautiful. Robert suggests to Ash to test out Glalie's Ice Beam. Glalie follows suit, using Ice Beam to freeze Team Rocket and send them blasting off. Jessie is angered that her dreams of becoming Top Coordinator have been shattered yet again, to which Meowth sarcastically replies that if she really wants something to be shattered to wait until they land.

May sighs, now that it’s over but she is relieved to have made it this far, and everyone else is proud of her. It was a pretty intense battle and Top Eight is pretty impressive for a coordinator's first Grand Festival. However, Harley is really embarrassed and jealous and sulking in a corner, that after all his scheming carefully to beat May and failing, Drew beat her just like that. Hopefully he learned from that. May then roots for Drew for the time being.
In the second stage and with thirty seconds remaining, May's Combusken and Bulbasaur face off against Anthony with Swalot and Pinsir. Anthony has only one-fourths of his score while May still has half of hers. Combusken tries to use Peck but Pinsir emerges from Swalot's mouth to pinch Combusken's beak shut. Time runs out, but May has the most points remaining and moves on to the third stage. Anthony respectfully congratulates May on the win and wishes her luck in the next stage. The third stage match ups are soon revealed, and May will face off against Drew.

Drew is now in the final round, facing Robert’s Milotic and Claydol, using Flygon and Drew. Robert has about sixty percent left and Drew barely has ten percent, and there are just thirty seconds left in the battle. Milotic sends a Twister at them, and before they can to anything Claydol pops out from the Twister and uses Hyper Beam. Finally, Milotic attacks them both with Iron Tail. Flygon and Masquerain both fall, and the battle as well as the Festival goes to Robert.
In the third stage, May chooses Combusken and May while Drew selects Drew's Roselia and a Flygon. Brock and Max are stunned by Drew's newest Pokémon while Ash looks it up in his Pokédex. May is surprised to see a Flygon, and Drew remarks that this match is its debut appearance, stating he raised Flygon specifically to battle against May in the Grand Festival. Roselia begins with a sparkling Petal Dance while Flygon flies right through it to attack. Skitty counters with Assist which comes out as Fire Spin and burns the opponents' combination. Combusken uses Sky Uppercut but misses its target and falls back onto Skitty. Flygon uses Flamethrower and Roselia unleashes a Solar Beam towards their opponents while May has Combusken use Fire Spin to push the combined attacks away. The failure of his massive attack combination costs Drew serious points, putting May in the lead. Combusken uses Fire Spin again while Flygon counters with Sandstorm which blows the attack away. Skitty aims a Blizzard, though Roselia jumps on top of Flygon to fly away and dodge it. May's points suffer from having both of her attacks fail.

Confetti fills the stage, the crowd cheers as Vivian awards Robert the cup. May is a little disappointed that Drew lost, but at least he got pretty far as well. Plus, who knows she would have been against Robert. Anyway, to end the festival, Vivian announces a conclusion party in the evening.
Putting her trust in its unpredictability, May orders an Assist attack from Skitty, which turns into a Vine Whip, but it misses Flygon. Undeterred, May declares Vine Whip to be just what she needs, and orders Combusken use the Vine Whip to jump high into the air. Roselia calls for a Magical Leaf which Skitty blows away with Blizzard. Flygon uses Flamethrower, but it is exactly what May wanted to happen. May has Combusken dive into the flames towards Flygon and smashes it with Sky Uppercut. Caroline is overcome with joy at seeing her daughter work so well with Pokémon. Vivian gives May praise while Norman watches from Petalburg City with pride. However, with little time and Drew still holding the lead, May can only hope for a knockout to win the round. She calls for Skitty to use Tackle and Combusken to use Quick Attack. Roselia replies with a Stun Spore that hits and Paralysis the pair. Flygon finishes the match off with Steel Wing. The five minutes is up, and Drew is declared the winner. May is upset by the loss but puts on a brave face as she checks on her Pokémon. The crowd begins cheering for May and her wonderful performance, though the applause infuriates Harley who declares that there is no justice in the world.

May’s enjoying herself later that evening, but then notices in the distance something that looks a bit like fireworks. Then she turns around, and notices Drew outside the area, training with Roselia and Masquerain. She’s a little surprised that he’s not participating, but apparently he’d rather be training. Robert is really an experienced Coordinator and Drew wants to compete in next year’s festival as well. He knows Robert will be there, since he’s there every year and his current challenge is to beat Robert. In fact, he did meet him back at the Slateport Contest Hall. Robert has been the undefeated top Coordinator for years now, and now Drew wants that position. May stands there for a moment as Drew walks off, thinking to herself but then Ash and friends interrupt this moment.
Drew faces Robert in the final stage, and he is losing by a lot of points. Milotic uses Twister while Claydol rushes through the Twister and attacks Masquerain and Roselia with Hyper Beam, before Milotic finished them off with Iron Tail. With the win, Robert becomes a Top Coordinator and wins the coveted Ribbon Cup. During the awards ceremony, May says to Drew that she's sorry he lost, but Drew isn't bothered by the loss and tells her that it seems to him there will always be someone better.

They then notice Drew in the distance, and ask if she knows what he’s up to. As her mom comments that this was a cozy moment, May gets a little embarrassed and blushes. She then says that she definitely wants to try for the Grand Festival again next year. She’s found her ambition, and that is to be the top Coordinator. Her mother and friends all wish her luck then Caroline remembers Ash and also wishes him luck. That’s right, it’s time to head over to Ever Grande City for the Hoenn League!
Later that night, an after-party takes place to celebrate the conclusion of the Hoenn Grand Festival. May sits down after eating a lot, looks behind her and wonders where the flashing lights are coming from. She locates the source, and it is Drew continuing to practice his Contest techniques. Drew remarks that Robert is also training so no one will get ahead of him, hence why he became the Top Coordinator. Drew explains that if May wants to become a Top Coordinator, she has to keep practicing and getting better. He admits that he looks forward to the next Grand Festival and also expects May to be there. He promptly walks off, leaving May speechless. Ash offers May a vanilla ice cream cone but startles her in the process. Caroline realizes the pair were momentarily alone and suggests there might be a romantic connection. May sharply reminds her that she and Drew are just friends. She admits that Drew did give her something to consider however, admitting that she is planning on not giving up until she becomes a Top Coordinator. Caroline is very proud of her daughter's new ambition but reminds May that now she has to support Ash as he tries to become the next Hoenn League Champion.

May and Harley face off in the main competition of the Grand Festival! It's Harley's Banette and Cacturne against May's Beautifly and Bulbasaur. May's team gets in the first hits, but Harley makes a comeback and it takes some quick thinking for May to beat Harley and move onto the semifinals.

Now it's Drew and Robert in the finals. To May's surprise, Robert earns the victory and wins the Festival. But Drew isn't upset—that night, even though there's a party, he goes right back to training. Impressed by his example, May sets her sights on next year's Grand Festival!

Plot

Harley starts his battle with May by having his Banette use Screech, while his Cacturne uses Bullet Seed. Both hit their marks and lower May's points. May has Bulbasaur attack with Vine Whip; Harley's Pokémon try to dodge it, but Bulbasaur grabs onto their legs.

Team Rocket recites their motto before calling out Cacnea and Dustox to attack.

In the third stage, May chooses Combusken and Skitty while Drew selects Drew's Roselia and a Flygon.

Roselia replies with a Stun Spore that hits and paralyses the pair.

Trivia

Errors

 • During the battle between May and Harley, Brock says that "Bulbasaur cannot use Vine Whip for awhile now", after Banette uses Torment. Torment only prevents a Pokémon from using the same move twice in a row.
 • In one part of the episode, May says "Combusken, use jump!", which is not a move.
 • After defeating Harley, Vivian Meridian says that May will be moving on to the semifinals, but in reality, she was moving on to the Top 16.
 • When Drew is watching May and Harley's battle, the time counter goes from 4:01 to 3:00 to 3:59.

Dub edits

 • In the original Japanese version, Banette and Cacturne's eyes turn into X's after being spun around. In the English dub, their eyes were changed to sideways-facing arrows. This also occurs with Cacnea when Team Rocket is blasted off.

Pokémon Trainer's Choice

 • Question: Trainers, what is the final evolution of Geodude?
 • Choices: Dugtrio, Golem, Regirock
 • Answer: OK, Trainers! If you chose Golem, you were right!
