Trivia
- According to an interview in Nintendo Power with Ken Sugimori, Shellos and Gastrodon were originally designed for Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, but were not implemented in the final design.
- No in-game trainer uses the East species in battle, even if the trainer's current location is east of Mt. Coronet, where only the blue species could be caught.
Origin
Gastrodon is based on sea slugs.
Name Origin
Gastrodon's name is derived from "gastropod", the zoological category slugs and snails belong to, and "don", a Spanish honorific meaning leader or king, or in other words, king of snalis and slugs.
The name Toritodon may also come from the fact that eastern Gastrodon look like cows or oxen. The word Torito is Spanish for "ox". Its name might mean "royal ox snail", referring to its strength. Its French name, Tritosor, comes from triton.
