Route 124

The underwater area of the route.

Route 124 is a large Water route that links Lilycove City's eastern side with Route 126's northern side. Near the center of the route, the path turns to the south. You will need Dive to fully explore it. At the mouth of the outlet near Mossdeep, a pair of islands play home to the Diving Treasure Hunter, who will exchange Shards for Evolutionary stones. South of the outlet, Route 124 becomes Route 126.

There are 16 spots to Dive along the route. Although not every spot is connected to one another via underwater pathways, most are, allowing trainers to reach otherwise inaccessible areas of Route 124. Seaweed, the underwater equivalent of long grass, line the submarine passages of the route.

Diving Treasue Hunter

The Diving Treasure Hunter is a man that will exchange Shards for evolutionary stones. He lives in a small hut on Route 124, near Mossdeep City. If you talk to him, he will trade a corresponding stone for your Shard based on its color. This transaction is one of the few ways to obtain evolutionary stones, so take advantage of this guy!

Mossdeep City

Mossdeep City

Mossdeep City is on an island. North of the city is the Shoal Cave, which is located on Route 125. To its west is where you have traveled from, Route 124, and to the east is Route 127. It blossoms with flowers and trees. The city's slogan is Cherish Pokémon!. It also has a Space Center which boasts of being the closest place to space. Now, the house right at the corner of the west side of the city is Steven Stone's house. Enter it. You will find a note left by Steven, saying that he has gone on a journey and is leaving Beldum, his most favorite Pokémon, for you. There is a Poké Ball next to it. It contains a level 5 Beldum. This is a nice surprise... Beldum is the first evolution of Metagross, a very powerful Template:Type2. Unfortunately, the only move Beldum learns is Take Down. But once it evolves into Metang at Level 20, it's a good Pokémon, and it's awesome once it becomes Metagross at Level 45. Now head out. There are also other houses. One boy will inform you about where your secret base is in case you have forgotten. In another house, a Black Belt will inform you which Pokéblocks your Pokémon like. Another Black Belt, who is standing outside on the waves will teach your Pokémon DynamicPunch.

As you probably noticed, there is a Gym here. The specialty type is Psychic, and the highest-leveled Pokémon are Level 42, so training to at least that level before challenging the Gym is recommended. Know in advance that there are two Gym Leaders here— Tate and Liza are twins and will challenge you to a Double Battle! When you're ready, enter the Gym.

Mossdeep Gym

The Mossdeep Gym's layout

This gym is similar to one in Kanto in that it's a series of rooms connected by warp tiles. Each room contains trainers and obstacles on spinners that rotate when certain tiles are stepped on, changing the path and often bringing the sight of enemy trainers in-line with you. In Ruby and Sapphire, the Gym's puzzle had only spinner tiles.

As stated before, the Trainers here use Template:Type2 Pokémon, which are weak to Bug-, Dark-, and Ghost-type attacks. Psychic is good against Fighting- and Poison-types, so don't use those Pokémon in this Gym challenge. Dark-type Pokémon are immune to Psychic-type attacks, and Dark-type moves can be learned by a wide variety of Pokémon, so use that to your advantage here.

The Mind Badge

When you challenge the Gym Leaders, they send out Claydol, a Psychic/Ground-type, and Xatu, a Psychic/Flying-type. Claydol knows Earthquake, a powerful Ground-type attack that will hit both your Pokémon unless they have the Ability Levitate or are a Flying-type. (Note: All of Tate and Liza's Pokémon are immune to Ground-type moves due to either Levitate or being of the Flying type.) Xatu also has the powerful attack Psychic, the Template:Type2 move AncientPower, and Light Screen to reduce damage to its team by Special attacks by one-third. However, it has a huge amount of weaknesses: the types Water, Grass, Ice, Ghost, Dark, and Bug will all do super-effective damage. Use moves of those types to take it out. Xatu has a moderately high Special Attack stat, and also knows Psychic. Its other moves are Confuse Ray, which will confuse your Pokémon, Calm Mind to boost its Special Attack and Special Defense, and Sunny Day for some reason. Sunny Day will give a boost to any Template:Type2 moves used in battle, so use this to your advantage! A good Ice-, Electric-, Rock-, or Dark-type move or two will most likely knock it out. Once Xatu and Claydol are taken care of, the next Pokémon are Solrock and Lunatone. These two are both Psychic/Rock-types, and are therefore supereffectively damaged by Water, Grass, and Steel as well as the normal Psychic-type weaknesses. Like Xatu, Solrock knows Sunny Day, except that it can put the move to good use— it knows SolarBeam, a Grass-type move with 120 base power, which will not need to waste a turn for charging during sunny weather. It also takes advantage of Sunny Day to give a boost to its Flamethrower. Grass-, Bug-, Ice-, and Steel-types will need to watch out! Lunatone is more defensive, with Light Screen, Calm Mind, and Hypnosis to make your Pokémon fall asleep, as well as Psychic.

After they are defeated, Tate and Liza give you the Mind Badge and TM04 (Calm Mind). Exit the Gym using the warp tiles.

Next, you'll be headed to Route 126.
