A sea route (Japanese: 水道 water route), is a route that crosses a body of water, and may be made up nearly entirely of water, with only a few islands. Sea routes typically begin to appear late in the game, and can usually only be traversed by using Surf.
Sea routes are often among the longest routes in the games, often densely-populated with Swimmers who use Water-type Pokémon. Unlike land routes, on sea routes wild Pokémon can attack at any time, forcing Trainers to stay alert. Typically, Tentacool and Tentacruel are common sights.
Some sea routes in Johto have whirlpools blocking the way, while some in Hoenn have spots where it is deep enough to dive underwater.
