Walkthrough:Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl/Part 12
These pages follow the remade Nintendo Switch iteration, not Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The guide for those games can be found here.
Pastoria City
Pastoria City sits on the southern coast of Sinnoh at the western end of Route 213. It is home to the Pastoria Gym, led by Crasher Wake, and the Great Marsh, a large wetland nature preserve.
Explore the city before challenging the gym. A patch of soft soil northeast of the Poké Mart contains Berries that regrow daily. The house to the South contains the move reminder who can teach your Pokémon a move they forgot in exchange for a Heart Scale.

Great Marsh
The Great Marsh is a large wetland preserve in the north of Pastoria City, serving as Sinnoh's Safari Zone. Pay $500 at the reception desk to enter with 30 Safari Balls and a limit of 500 steps. A woman at the reception desk gives you Defog as you enter. Defog is a Flying-type move that clears field hazards such as Spikes and Stealth Rock in battle.
Use the binoculars on the observation deck to check which changing Pokémon are available in each of the six areas that day. The daily changing Pokémon rotate each day and include some rare species not found elsewhere in Sinnoh, such as Carnivine.

Pastoria Gym
The Pastoria Gym specializes in Water-type Pokémon. The gym floor features chambers connected by water-operated valves. Pressing the correct valves lowers the water level in connected rooms, opening new paths to reach Crasher Wake at the back. Grass- and Electric-type moves are effective against Water types, but note that Quagsire is Water/Ground-type and therefore immune to Electric and quadruply weak to Grass. Crasher Wake's Gyarados is part Flying-type, making it doubly weak to Electric-type moves and immune to Ground.

Upon defeating Crasher Wake, you receive the Fen Badge and TM55 (Brine) x5. The Fen Badge enables the use of Defog as field move. Watch out for Crasher Wake's rain strategy: Quagsire sets up Rain Dance with its Damp Rock extending the effect to 8 turns, which then activates Floatzel's Swift Swim to double its Speed. Try to defeat Quagsire quickly with a Grass-type move before it can set up rain, or bring a fast Electric-type to handle Gyarados and Floatzel. Gyarados's Wide Lens boosts the accuracy of its moves, and its low HP activates Flail at full power, so avoid letting it get to low health.
Rival Battle
After the battle, talk to the Team Galactic Grunt near the entrance to the Great Marsh to make them leave toward Route 213. Follow them and talk to them again and Barry will appear and challenge you to a battle.
Route 213
Head east along Route 213 back toward Valor Lakefront. The Swimmer trainers in the water section cannot be battled yet as Surf is not available until Part 13.
You will meet again the Team Galactic grunt on the beach. Be sure to talk to them again.
Hotel Grand Lake
Pass through Hotel Grand Lake on the way east. If you have not yet done so, pick up the Suite Key hidden near the north entrance to Hotel Grand Lake on Route 213 and return it to the woman in her bungalow for a Lava Cookie.
You will meet again the Team Galactic grunt near the stairs towards Route 214. Be sure to talk to them again and continue east to Valor Lakefront.
Valor Lakefront
You will find the Team Galactic Grunt but when talking to them you will battle them instead.

After the battle, Cynthia will be further North and gives you the Secret Medicine, a remedy that can cure the Psyduck suffering from severe headaches on the north section of Route 210, north of Solaceon Town.
Cynthia then heads for Celestic Town and suggests you follow once you have cured the Psyduck.
You can directly fly back to Solaceon Town or Veilstone City to reach Route 210 and reach the Psyduck blockade.
However, we will make a small detour through Route 212. So fly back instead to Pastoria City and continue west to reach Route 212. Head north through Route 214 and west through Veilstone City and Solaceon Town to
