Pokémon Carddass Part 3 & 4

Carddass vending machine

Pokémon Carddass Part 3 & 4 are a set of Pokémon cards that were manufactured by a subsidiary of Bandai named Carddass in 1997 in Japan. These cards could be bought by using vending machines. Carddass (カードダス, Kādodasu) is a name given to Bandai's card vending machines and, thus, a generic term given to the cards sold by these machines. Pokémon Carddass Part 3 & 4 is also known as Bandai Pocket Monsters.

Background

The cards feature all 151 Pokémon from Generation I. Additionally, two checklist cards (one numbered 0, and the other having the Carddass logo in place of a number) were distributed at Ito-Yokado department stores.

Part 3 & 4 (1997) depict a Pokémon using a move it can learn by leveling up, such as a signature move or a move that it is particularly associated with. All these artworks were drawn by Ken Sugimori, most of which is exclusive to this series. The backs of the cards provide simple information about the featured Pokémon, usually their evolutionary lines and what level they evolve at. A few cards also have Holofoil backgrounds on the front, as opposed to the usual non-holofoil pixelated background.

Due to the cards being distributed by vending machines rather than booster boxes, there is limited information about exactly how there were distributed. This set of cards was released in two parts (Parts 3 and 4), but it is unknown which cards were available in each part, as well as what the overlap between the two parts was (if any).

Special promotional items

In April 1997 a promotional, rainbow-framed card featuring Red with the four first partner Pokémon (including Pikachu) was released in Ito-Yokado stores in Japan. A second rainbow-framed card featuring both Red and Blue was released two months later in June 1997 exclusive to vending machines at Ito-Yokado stores.

Later, a special promotional set of six "jumbo" cards were released that each contain removable stickers on one side, and contain Pokémon Trainer facts printed on the other side. Once all of the stickers are peeled from the front side, a single, large piece of artwork is revealed underneath on that side of the card.

For this set there was made a promotional Album to collect all the 153 cards. This was made for the Japanese market with 6 cards on each page. The Album was also known under the name 'Carddass station system file' or 'card file'.
