Draft:Johto Badges

Ash Ketchum's badges as seen in Why? Wynaut!

In Johto, the Johto League's eight Gyms give out badges which can qualify Trainers for the right to challenge the Elite Four.

There is also at least one non-Gym Badge that is given in the Johto region, but it is not detailed here.

List of Badges

The following is a list of the eight standard Badges of the Johto region's Johto League, in their standard order. The details listed below describe the Badges in the core series games, although some details may vary in other media.

In the core series

The Johto Badges can be acquired in games based in Johto: Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver.

In these games, after becoming Champion, Badges from Kanto can also be acquired; for details on those, see Kanto Badges.

Acquisition order

The Zephyr, Hive, Plain, and Fog Badges must be acquired first and can only be acquired in that order, while the Rising Badge can only be acquired last. The Storm, Mineral, and Glacier Badges can be acquired in any order after acquiring the Fog Badge.

Effects

Acquiring the Johto Badges can have the following effects:

Obedience

Outsider Pokémon may disobey the player if their level is too high. The following table lists the maximum levels at which outsider Pokémon will obey the player, depending on the Badges they have.

Obedience  G  S  C   HG  SS
Up to Lv. 10 No Badges No Badges
Up to Lv. 20 Zephyr Badge
Up to Lv. 30 Hive Badge Hive Badge
Up to Lv. 50 Fog Badge Fog Badge
Up to Lv. 70 Storm Badge Mineral Badge
All Pokémon Rising Badge Rising Badge

Stat boost

Some Badges boost a certain stat of the player's Pokémon. The stats are increased by 12.5%. This boost is not applied in link battles and it was removed in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

If the attack is a critical hit and the attacker's used offensive stat stage is less than or equal to the opponent's defensive stat stage, all Badge boosts are ignored.

Stat  G  S  C
Attack Zephyr Badge
Defense Mineral Badge
Special Attack and Special Defense Glacier Badge
Speed Plain Badge

Due to an oversight, the boost to Special Defense is not applied if the Pokémon's unboosted Special Attack is between 0 and 205 or between 433 and 660, inclusive.

Type boost

In the Johto-based games, each Badge boosts the power of moves of a given type by 12.5%. With 16 Badges available between Johto and Kanto, that makes one Badge for each type. The boosted type generally corresponds to the Gym's dominant type. This boost is not applied in link battles.

Unlike other effects of Badges, this boost is never mentioned in-game.

Badge Boosted type
Zephyr Badge Flying
Hive Badge Bug
Plain Badge Normal
Fog Badge Ghost
Storm Badge Fighting
Mineral Badge Steel
Glacier Badge Ice
Rising Badge Dragon

HM moves

Some Badges allow the player to use HM moves as field moves, outside of battle. The following table shows which Badges are required to use an HM move outside of battle.

Poké Marts

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the items sold by Poké Marts vary based on the number of Badges the player has. The table below shows which new items are sold when a new Badge is acquired.

Badges Poké Mart inventory
No Badges Poké Ball[a], Potion, Antidote, Paralyze Heal
1 Badge Super Potion, Awakening, Burn Heal, Ice Heal, Escape Rope, Repel
3 Badges Great Ball, Revive, Super Repel
5 Badges Ultra Ball, Hyper Potion, Full Heal
7 Badges Max Potion, Max Repel
8 Badges Full Restore
  1. The Poké Ball is only offered after the player has completed the catching tutorial on Route 29.

State changes

Badges can also affect conditions for certain events or characters in the world.

In addition, obtaining the seventh Badge will trigger a couple of events. Team Rocket will take over the Goldenrod Radio Tower and block access to many parts of Goldenrod City as well. Also, in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the RageCandyBar seller at the east end of Mahogany Town will no longer block access to Route 44.

In other games

Pokémon Stadium 2

In Pokémon Stadium 2, the Badges are used to track the player's progress through the Stadium cups (Little Cup, Poké Cup, Prime Cup, and Challenge Cup), challenges where the player must complete eight battles in a row; winning the first battle is marked by the Zephyr Badge, the second by the Hive Badge, and so on.

In animation

Pokémon the Series

Badges on the title card of Pokémon: Master Quest episodes

In Pokémon the Series, the Johto Badges allow Trainers to participate in the Silver Conference. Badges are earned by defeating Johto Gym Leaders, and gathering eight Badges is one way to earn a spot in the conference.

Alternative Badge givers

In Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!, Jasmine briefly mentions leaving Olivine Gym in the hands of a colleague.

Appearances

Ash Ketchum obtained all eight Johto Badges in Pokémon the Series.

Gary Oak obtained all eight Johto Gym Badges. He is not shown to earn any of them directly, but he does join the Silver Conference in A Claim to Flame!.

In Pokémon Chronicles, Sakura mentions that she has the Storm, Zephyr, and Hive Badges in The Blue Badge of Courage.

Two Trainers in Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl, also have Johto Badges. Reggie is seen to have all eight of the Johto Badges in Lost Leader Strategy!, while Lyra shows the Zephyr and Hive Badges that she earned in An Egg Scramble!.

POKÉTOON

In PT17, all eight of the Johto Gym Badges appeared on television.

In the manga

Pokémon Adventures

In Pokémon Adventures, in Smeargle Smudge, when Falkner is appointed as the Violet Gym's new Gym Leader, he is handed a Zephyr Badge. He is told to safeguard it and to award it to challengers whose strength he acknowledges.

In Playful Porygon2, all eight Johto Badges are briefly featured when Silver arrives at the Pokémon League tournament and presents them to gain entrance. The staff remark on the rarity of this, as Silver walks away remarking to himself that he stole them since the Gym Leaders were all absent. Eventually, he would return them all.

Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys

Gold earned four of the Johto Badges in Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys.

Pokémon Pocket Monsters

In Pokémon Pocket Monsters, Red reaches the Elite Four, but he is only explicitly shown with six of the eight Johto Badges.

Gold and Silver also met Red on Victory Road, so they presumably have all eight Badges as well.

The Zephyr Badge also seems to be used in a unique way. In the games, the Zephyr Badge allows the player to use Flash in the field if a Pokémon knows it; in The Gym Challenges Begin!!, the elder tosses the Zephyr Badge to his Bellsprout and tells it to use the Badge, and Bellsprout wields it to use Flash.

Later, in PMHGSS05, Red once again collects all eight Johto Badges, so that the Raikou, Entei, and Suicune who joined him in the last chapter will obey his commands. (The chapter does not make any note of Badges Red previously earned.) Red is seen battling Falkner and receiving the Zephyr Badge, and then battling Bugsy; at the end of the chapter, Clefairy shows off all eight Badges.

Pocket Monsters HGSS Jō's Big Adventure

is seen earning two Johto Badges in Pocket Monsters HGSS Jō's Big Adventure.

  • Zephyr Badge: JBA1, won by defeating Falkner.
  • Fog Badge: JBA2, won by defeating Morty.

He also battled the Elite Four in JBA5, so he presumably earned the other six Badges as well.

In books

Three Pokémon Chapter Books, which retell the story of Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver episodes, cover Ash earning the first three Badges: the Zephyr Badge in Battle for the Zephyr Badge, the Hive Badge in Secrets of the GS Ball, and the Plain Badge in Winner Takes All.

Merchandise

The Johto Gym Badges have been featured as official goods.

They also appear in other merchandise.

League Rewards

The Johto Badges were also part of the Pokémon League Rewards during the 2001 cycle. These were small, rectangular lapel pins featuring the Pokémon League logo above an image of the Badge.

Monopoly: Pokémon Edition (2001)

In Monopoly: Pokémon Edition (2001), the Zephyr and Hive Badges replace the traditional "Electric Company" and "Water Works", respectively.

Pokémon V-Trainer

The Pokémon V-Trainer electronic toys included sets dedicated to the Johto Gym Leaders, which also displayed the Gym's Badge. These were released in 2002.
