The Ready Button interface in Generation VI
The Japanese name
"べんりボタン"
(translated in Generation V as "Ready button")

In all core series Pokémon games from Generation II onward (except Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!), the player can register (Japanese: 登録 register) and deselect/deregisterBDSP (Japanese: 解除 deselect) certain functionality and/or Key Items to/from the hardware buttons SELECT or Y for use in the overworld without navigating to the menu and selecting the appropriate category.

This is referred to as the Ready button (Japanese: 便利ボタン handy button). The Japanese and Korean names of the Ready button debuted in the Generation II games. For instance, in the Japanese games from Generation II onward, this name is mentioned when the player presses this button without having any item registered. However, the English name "Ready button" is only used in Generation V and VI.

Trainer Tips that mention this process can be found on Hoenn Route 113, Sinnoh Route 209, Unova Route 6, and Alola Route 9.

Differences between generations

Generations IIIII

One Key Item can be registered to the SELECT Button. Any Key Item can be registered, including those with no Use option.

Generation IV

Only Key Items with a Use option, such as the Bicycle or Dowsing Machine, can be registered. Other items, such as the Storage Key or Secret Medicine, cannot be registered.

Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum

One Key Item can be registered to the Y Button.

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver

Up to two Key Items can be registered at a time. The first item registered can be accessed through the Y Button, while both can be accessed on the Touch Screen.

Generation V

Most menu entries can be registered, in addition to any Key Item with a Use option. The Ready button allows access to registered functions and items using the Y Button. It is managed by adding or removing check marks (Japanese: 四角いマーク square marks) to or from the boxes at the bottom of the Pokémon List, Pokédex, Bag, Trainer Card, or Options by tapping them. Registrable Key Items also have a box next to the item in the Bag that can be toggled by tapping it. Pressing the Y Button on that screen/while the cursor is over the box will also toggle the box in Black 2 and White 2.

If only one function or item is registered, it acts the same as in previous generations and does not bring up the Ready button interface. The button's list is limited to 25BW/34B2W2 entries which can be rearranged by pressing SELECT.

In the Help System, the function to remove registration is called "unregister" in English, instead of "deselect" as in the Bag. This is due to the equivalent original Japanese text being (Japanese: 「登録を 解除」), which can be translated as deselect a registration or unregister.

Generation VI

The Ready button allows up to four Key Items (with a Use option) to be registered to the Y Button. If more than one item is registered, the +Control Pad or Circle Pad can be used to choose one of the items.

Generation VII

Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon

The Ride Pager is accessed using the Y Button. Up to four Ride Pokémon can be registered to the +Control Pad for quick access. Only Ride Pokémon can be registered and Key Items cannot be registered.

Generation VIII

Pokémon Sword and Shield

The Y-Comm is accessed using the Y Button. Key Items cannot be registered.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Up to four Key Items can be registered to the + Button. If more than one item is registered, the left control stick can be used to choose one of the items.
