Literal ghost is a conjectural name, but it's still a ghost never-the-less. Moving it to Ghost (literal) would show that it is literally a ghost of a dead Pokémon and not a Ghost Pokémon such as Gengar. What you encountered was because of the games' habit of using a specific colour palette for each pokemon due to colour limitations of the earlier games, particuarly since colour games had not long been released. Pikachu, for example, would use a yellow palette, while growlithe would use orange. Starmie was a special case, because even back then it was supposed to be 3 colours, but Nintendo had to use grey as a "safe" colour and a similar case held true for Tentacool and Tentacruel. Their "gems" were blue in those games due to a limited colour palette. Catch my drift? So, when you encounter a disguised ghost, it uses the palette of the pokemon you encounter, so a disguised Cubone or Marowak would use brown/grey while a Gastly/Haunter would use purple. What you're suggesting is not really needed and it is mentioned in the trivia. LordHeinz 01:43, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
Just curious...
I remember playing Pokemon Blue when I was around 6-8 years old. Not truly the point, but I was wondering if maybe I was dreaming it up or if anyone else has ever encountered a literal ghost on some of the earlier floors before the Marowak battle? I strangely did encounter a couple and they would all turn into Growlithes. Just wondering if it was actually the game or if I was jsut dreaming that up when I was younger. == In the Anime ==
Look at the "In the anime" section. It says "In the anime, a ghost of the same sort appeared briefly in The Tower of Terror. Later, a Haunter takes Ash's and Pikachu's souls out of their bodies after they have been struck by a chandelier." So I'm guessing a literal ghost appears before the chandelier incident. Where in the episode does the ghost appear briefly? Are there any screen captures or elaboration? Chrisjh0223 (talk) 23:59, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
*I watched that episode twice up to the point where Ash and Pikachu "die" in an attempt to see if I could find something, but the closest I could find to mathc the description was about 8 minutes in, when the gang walk into the dining room while it's still pitch-black and on the wall a painting of a woman wearing black sitting in a chair can be seen, and again just as Ash and Misty are about to flee (although her clothes are red this time around). Besides that, I couldn't see anything. LordHeinz (talk) 12:53, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
The lavender town/marowak ghost does NOT appear in the anime AT ALL. I would remove it, but i want to know why its there first.

:The ghost is just the game giving an alternate sprite to the wild Pokémon that can normally appear (there's actually a glitch that allows you to view what the Pokémon really is). Given the recent expansion of this article, might the title Ghosts in the Pokémon world make sense, to match other articles about in-universe phenomena such as Illness in the Pokémon world and Animals in the Pokémon world? == External link to Wikipedia ==
As I've previously mentioned, while this article was originally created specifically to be about the Ghosts in Pokémon Tower, it has expanded to be about Ghosts throughout the Pokémon world. As such, I think it would make sense to link to the real world topic's page on Wikipedia. Other articles about real world phenomena have included such a link, such as Baseball, Christmas, and Illness in the Pokémon world, to name a few. Thoughts? <span style="font-family:Tahoma"><font color="F34134">Land</font><span style="font-family:Tahoma"><small><font color="8334B7">fish7</font></small></span></span> 10:57, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
Split
As discussed here and on the Bulbagarden Discord server, I think this article should be split into Ghosts in the Pokémon world, covering the various instances of ghosts in the Pokémon franchise, and Ghost (Pokémon Tower), covering the Pokémon Tower game mechanic. As I've discussed before on this talk page, I think "Ghosts in the Pokémon world" would be a better title than the current one, and given the current direction this article has taken, would fit better with the other articles relating to real-world concepts appearing in the Pokémon world. This article could still cover the lore aspects of the ghosts that appear in Pokémon Tower, while Ghost (Pokémon Tower) could cover the topic from a game mechanic perspective, including sprites and images from the various Kanto-based games and how the mechanic differs from generation to generation, etc. Thoughts?
If there's enough interest in this I'd be more than happy to get started on a draft of User:Landfish7/Ghosts in the Pokémon world and User:Landfish7/Ghost (Pokémon Tower) to help facilitate the split. <span style="font-family:Tahoma"><font color="F34134">Land</font><span style="font-family:Tahoma"><small><font color="8334B7">fish7</font></small></span></span> 05:56, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
:I personally think this is a good idea. It fixes the longstanding problematic (literal) article title. I also think the split is appropriate given the direction those Pokémon world articles have taken, and giving the Pokémon Tower mechanic the focus it deserves is definitely beneficial. I would love to see the two drafts if you're willing to put in the leg work. Without any disagreements throughout the multiple places we've discussed this article, I don't see why we can't move it along. : The website itself is "run by" Hex Maniac Hitomi who enjoys the supernatural side of the world. She notes you can meet "it" in the building but the region also has holocasters which allow for projecting holograms wherever they are needed for relaying a message. Given Hitomi's nature, she may have added the hologram to the room to draw people there after writing about it. (Website appeared a year after the game... which came out in October of 2013.) In the Junichi Masada interview with Kotaku a year after the game release, when asked about the ghost girl, he states no such person was added to the game; when shown the footage he laughed it off and said "ooooo" a few times, which could also imply it's a gag of some sort. While not directly stated on the website, the interview combined with the website gives implications that is probably not a ghost, but rather a hologram from a holocaster or a Pokémon projecting it into the room as a way to prank trainers. It's a literal ghost as opposed to Gastly and the like who seem to be something different. --FabuVinny T-C-S 16:54, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
Well, if it is a ghost a a Marowak, why don't we call it Marowak Ghost???? --Theryguy512 18:28, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
What if a different ghost showed up, however? I think we should keep the name.. Tina δ 18:31, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

← It's a "literal" ghost because Gastly, Haunter, and presumably Gengar would be that as well without the Silph Scope. The Marowak's the exception, actually. TTEchidnaGSDS! 18:41, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

How about "Mystery Ghost" or "Un-Silphed Ghost"? Missingno. Master 23:53, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

That's not really too good an idea. Literal ghost describes it better. TTEchidnaGSDS! 04:53, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

I have an idea. How about Unsilphscopeificationalizationized Ghost "Pokémon Tower Ghost"? Well, maybe the latter's a little too cheesy. PH1R3STRIKE 22:53, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

What about GHOST (capitalized)? That's what it is named in the games. --Metagross72 03:44, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Metagross72

"GHOST" may be a little confusing, as it is also Haunter's Japanese name. PH1R3STRIKE 20:33, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

I think it should be changed to Ghost (Literal) so that everything's a bit less confusing. Sukineko123 01:28, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Japanese Name

I really doubt that Japanese name for literal ghost is ゴースト (Ghost) because it's already a Japanese name of Haunter and would lead to confusions. The Japanese word for ghost is Yūkai, but I'm not sure if those ghosts are called so in game (because there are actually few words for ghost/spirit in Japanese). Someone just has to check it out in Japanese version of G/R/B/Y/FR/LG... --Maxim 19:39, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

yeah something has to happen

i already said it before but we should merge with gastly or haunter (or possibly marowak.) or give the ghost its own page on the dex list. (before or after gastly or cubones group) #91.5 or #105 and a half.Whatswithalltheextraspace 18:25, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

You already said it before? I don't see your name on the page. Are you a sockpuppet by any chance? MoldyOrange 18:27, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

on a DIFFERENT pageWhatswithalltheextraspace 21:50, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

any way the sprite is diffirent between rby and frlg. oh and how about the name "lavender ghost"Whatswithalltheextraspace 21:30, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

That's actually a great name for the page. Anyone else in agreement? IIMarckus 22:38, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
It is fine the way it is. MoldyOrange 23:16, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
I kind of like Ghost (literal) for the name of the page. "Literal Ghost" seems like it's giving it a specific name or something.. ~Toastypk - Loom. 07:19, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
^What he said, now that I think about it. There's just something about that name 'Literal ghost' that doesn't...really fit. Glinn Mgraw 11:40, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Pokémon Tower Ghost is the most bestestest name choice, and you can't deny! PH1RESTRIKE 00:34, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
Old discussion is old, but I think it should be moved to Ghost (literal). --SnorlaxMonster 08:02, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
Still old discussion is still old, why haven't we came to a descision on this? --Landfish7 22:08, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

Gen II

This article states that "it can be battled as a normal Pokémon by walking through walls in Generation II." Is this true? How does one use the walk through walls to encounter it? Is there even a sprite for the Literal ghost in the Gen II games' coding? - Bardock 18:06, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

WAT? That's a LIE! Who put this in the Pedia? I have to kick his ass! --Maxim 18:08, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Where are the sprites for the "ghost" in generation I and III?

Should we put them there? If yes, where are they?! Metagross72 22:27, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

There is for Gen I, but I'm pretty sure there isn't for Gen II... ht14 03:45, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
It's Gen III.--Metagross72 04:48, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Gen III sprite

Should it be noted that the Gen III sprite is quite obviously based on Haunter's appearance? (Compare its FRLG sprite if unconvinced. [1]) --Poppy :3 07:36, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

I've added it, anyhow. If it's unsatisfactory, someone can always delete it. :3 --Poppy :3 14:04, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Should Pokemon Creepy Black be mentioned?

It is a hack where Ghost plays a major role (Well, at the end, at least). It is currently being worked on, but it could warrant a mention Shadowater 18:39, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Based on the fourth word of your comment, the answer is an obvious no. --Shiningpikablu252 19:50, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Ghosts of the Old Chateau

Shouldn't they be mentioned? And also if they are included, the intro text should be changed too.--Pokélova! 05:46, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Ghost (literal)

Literal ghost is a conjectural name, but it's still a ghost never-the-less. Moving it to Ghost (literal) would show that it is literally a ghost of a dead Pokémon and not a Ghost-type Pokémon such as Gengar. Anyone catch my drift? --Landfish7 15:41, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

I agree. Conjecture like this is bad when we have a real name (it is called "Ghost") and can just disambiguate it with parenthesis. --SnorlaxMonster 15:06, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

It does sound better than literal ghost so i agree to the move--Pokemonboy3000 05:33, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Special Marowak Sprite

So while playing Yellow, my Pikachu named Scruffy following close behind, I encountered tons of these things. They were all purple and black. ...

Except the Marowak. And I have a .PNG of the Marowak sprite. Is it needed? DB 00:46, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Cry

What cry does the ghost use? --Abcboy (talk) 12:41, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

If I remember correctly, it doesn't have a cry. It just appears silently.Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 13:18, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
In RBY, this is the case, but in FR/LG, it uses the cry of whatever Pokémon it really is. - unsigned comment from Missingno. Master (talkcontribs) 05:58, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

In the Anime

Look at the "In the anime" section. It says "In the anime, a ghost of the same sort appeared briefly in The Tower of Terror. Later, a Haunter takes Ash's and Pikachu's souls out of their bodies after they have been struck by a chandelier." So I'm guessing a literal ghost appears before the chandelier incident. Where in the episode does the ghost appear briefly? Are there any screen captures or elaboration? Chrisjh0223 (talk) 23:59, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

 • I watched that episode twice up to the point where Ash and Pikachu "die" in an attempt to see if I could find something, but the closest I could find to mathc the description was about 8 minutes in, when the gang walk into the dining room while it's still pitch-black and on the wall a painting of a woman wearing black sitting in a chair can be seen, and again just as Ash and Misty are about to flee (although her clothes are red this time around). Besides that, I couldn't see anything. LordHeinz (talk) 12:53, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

The lavender town/marowak ghost does NOT appear in the anime AT ALL. I would remove it, but i want to know why its there first. Pokemon nomekop (talk) 03:45, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Huh? The Marowak ghost isn't mentioned in the anime section.--ForceFire 05:26, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Is there any way to catch a Ghost on Gen 1?

I really want to catch a Ghost in Gen 1. I have a Gameshark too. So, if anyone knows, it would be helpful. Thanks.

--Team Rocket Executive Proton (talk) 12:49, 13 March 2016 (UTC) ~Team Rocket HQ

The ghost is just the game giving an alternate sprite to the wild Pokémon that can normally appear (there's actually a glitch that allows you to view what the Pokémon really is). The closes you can get to catching a Ghost is to catch the MissingNo. that has that sprite. --SnorlaxMonster 13:25, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

Shiny Ghost

If you don't have the Silph Scope, and you encounter a ghost which has all the things needed to be shiny, will the ghost shine, or use an alternate palette (like a shiny)? And, can the ghost Marowak be shiny? MageMagius (talk) 05:43, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

Move

Given the recent expansion of this article, might the title Ghosts in the Pokémon world make sense, to match other articles about in-universe phenomena such as Illness in the Pokémon world and Animals in the Pokémon world? I feel like that would be a better title than the somewhat odd title it has had for some time now. Landfish7 06:53, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

Strong support.--MissDelibirda (talk) 09:14, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

External link to Wikipedia

As I've previously mentioned, while this article was originally created specifically to be about the Ghosts in Pokémon Tower, it has expanded to be about Ghosts throughout the Pokémon world. As such, I think it would make sense to link to the real world topic's page on Wikipedia. Other articles about real world phenomena have included such a link, such as Baseball, Christmas, and Illness in the Pokémon world, to name a few. Thoughts? Landfish7 10:57, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

Thoughts?

If there's enough interest in this I'd be more than happy to get started on a draft of Ghosts in the Pokémon world and Ghost (Pokémon Tower) to help facilitate the split. Landfish7 05:56, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

I personally think this is a good idea. MaverickNate 08:23, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
Just wanna echo what you guys said, definitely seems like an improvement. Nescientist (talk) 12:38, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
I can't see any reason not to. --Kahran042 (talk) 15:19, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
Alright the drafts have been published for Ghosts in the Pokémon world and Ghost (Pokémon Tower). I've marked them as complete but let me know if I missed anything. I think people will be more likely to expand them once they're mainspaced, if anyone has any big ideas for these articles. I'm excited to see what kinds of information people might add to the both of them. Landfish7 04:45, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
Those two drafts look great, I think a split is the right call.--ForceFire 05:11, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

Lumiose City

Where does it say it's a marketing stunt, or even where it is suggested? Nothing like that is said on the Daisuki Club page linked as a reference.--Rocket Grunt 20:58, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

The website itself is "run by" Hex Maniac Hitomi who enjoys the supernatural side of the world. Frozen Fennec 21:52, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
That's really a stretch. It looks like it's primarily meant to be a ghost encounter and this speculation is more like a trivia that anything concrete or implied.--Rocket Grunt 07:50, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
