Marcus lived in ancient times and commanded Pokémon fitted with magical armor. This armor forced the Pokémon into complete obedience, similarly to a Dark Ball. However, if the armor is destroyed somehow, the Pokémon will be freed from his control. The control can also be overridden by Damos and Sheena's ability to touch the hearts of Pokémon.

He came to resent Arceus due to his belief that it would allow Michina Town to return to being a ruined land if it reclaimed the Jewel of Life. This led Marcus to become the driving force behind Damos's apparent betrayal of it. By using his Bronzong's Hypnosis, he was able to control Damos and force him to attack Arceus while not returning the Jewel of Life. He is shown to be extremely cunning, easily changing his plans when Sheena informs him of future events, and maintaining his composure even when his Bronzong and Heatran break free of his control and turn on him.
After meeting up with Sheena who had traveled to the past to stop Damos's apparent betrayal of Arceus, he learned how the future would have turned out as well as his own death. He then changed his plans to include silver water as well while attacking Arceus. This proved to be very effective and he almost succeeded in destroying it. However Sheena and Damos were able to communicate with the hearts of all the Pokémon including Bronzong and Heatran making them turn against Marcus. Ash was able to make him give up the Jewel of Life restoring Arceus back to full power.

In the first chain of events, Marcus and Damos apparently fell to their deaths when Arceus counterattacked against them viciously. Once history was altered and Marcus's plan was thwarted, all his Pokémon are freed from his control by Ash, Dawn, and Arceus and he went on to work under Damos.
During the end credits, it was revealed that Marcus had went on to work under Damos in cultivating the land.
