Before continuing south, leave Violet City to the west. An odd tree blocks the way, but in the meantime, speak to the man to pick up HM06 (Rock Smash). Returning to town, you can smash a rock at the east side of the city to find a hidden Hyper Potion.

The next destination is 32 to the south, but detour to 36 in the west first. Speak to the man to receive 06, a move that can now be used anytime in the field, thanks to the Zephyr Badge. On Thursdays, Arthur of the Week Siblings can be found here; speaking to him will result in a Hard Stone on the first meeting, and a List of Ribbons in the games after meeting all his siblings.

32 is a lengthy, Trainer-heavy route that stretches southward along the coastline. The mysterious Ruins of Alph lie off to the northwest, but only the first of the four chambers can be accessed at this point. South of the ruins are two men standing near a hill. The first gives you a Miracle Seed, while the man on the hill hands out 05. A Repel can be found in the tall grass west of Picnicker Liz. Head south to reach a small inlet, and collect the Great Ball and 09 from the shore before reaching the Pokémon Center. Further south, a shady man offers a "tasty, nutritious SlowpokeTail" for only pdollar1,000,000. On Fridays, Frieda of the Week Siblings can be found behind the Pokémon Center; speaking to her will result in a Poison Barb on the first meeting. The Fisherman inside gives out the Old Rod, and another patron gives out two Lure Balls. This Old Rod can be used to catch Krabby, which can learn five of the seven HM moves required to navigate any location in this game. It will be very useful if you cannot or do not want to teach those HM moves to the Pokémon that you use in battle. Smash the rock outside to reach a Shell Bell, and enter Union Cave.

Azalea is a small, isolated town on the southern edge of the peninsula. Situated between Union Cave to the east and Ilex Forest to the west, the area does not get many visitors. As you head into town, a man in a black uniform is confronted by a resident near the Slowpoke Well. The guy gets chased off, and the shady man goes back to guarding the well. A second figure blocks the Azalea Gym, as well. Stop by the northwest house to meet Kurt, the Apricorn craftsman. He informs you that Team Rocket has seized control of the well and is cutting off Slowpoke tails to sell, before rushing off to save the Pokémon.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo DS iteration, not Pokémon Gold and Silver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Violet City

Violet City

Violet City is the first city with a Pokémon Gym. Other landmarks include Sprout Tower in the north, and Earl's Pokémon Academy in the east.

The Juggler

The Juggler outside the Pokémon Center likes to collect Shards, and will trade three different Berries for each one. The Berries obtained correspond to the shard's color.

Shard Set Berries
Red Shard Red Shard A Cheri Berry Cheri Pecha Berry Pecha Leppa Berry Leppa
Blue Shard Blue Shard B Chesto Berry Chesto Oran Berry Oran Wiki Berry Wiki
Yellow Shard Yellow Shard C Aspear Berry Aspear Sitrus Berry Sitrus Iapapa Berry Iapapa
Green Shard Green Shard D Rawst Berry Rawst Lum Berry Lum Aguav Berry Aguav

Time for a Trade

The kid in the house near the Pokémon Center is looking for a Bellsprout. In return, he offers his Onix, Rocky.

Pokémon School

The Pokémon School is where young Trainers learn how to raise Pokémon. The blackboard lists the five status ailments that can affect a Pokémon.

Ailment Effect(s)
BRN Burn Attack drops to 50%; inflicts damage equal to 1/8 of maximum HP every turn
FRZ Freeze Cannot move until thawed (20% chance of recovery per turn)
PAR Paralysis Speed drops to 25%; cannot attack 1/4 of the time
PSN Poison Inflicts damage equal to 1/8 of maximum HP every turn; loses 1 HP for every four steps taken outside of battle
SLP Sleep Cannot move for one to four turns

Primo

A man named Primo appears in the Pokémon Center. He will offer the player the chance to give their opinion on him, as he is apparently a celebrity. If the right combination of phrases is selected, the player can get a Mareep Egg, a Wooper Egg, a Slugma Egg, and secret wallpapers.

Sprout Tower

Sprout Tower, 1F
Sprout Tower, 2F
Sprout Tower, 3F

Sprout Tower is a towering pagoda where Sages teach that all living things coexist through cooperation. Since these monks also train Pokémon, it's a good opportunity to train before challenging the Violet Gym.

2F

Battle Sage Nico and climb down the northeast ladder.

1F

Grab the Parlyz Heal, fight Sage Chow, and climb up the western ladder.

2F

Collect the X Accuracy and climb the southern ladder.

3F

Pick up the Potion and head north. It seems that Elder Li has just been defeated by Silver. The elder scolds him for being too harsh on his Pokémon, then Silver leaves via an Escape Rope. Grab the Escape Rope to the east, then speak to Li to be drawn into battle.

Li rewards you with TM70 (Flash), which illuminates certain areas. Use the Escape Rope to exit the tower, and set out for the first Gym.

Violet City

Violet Gym

Violet Gym

Violet City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Falkner

The Elegant Master of Flying Pokémon

The Violet Gym specializes in Flying-type Pokémon. Rock and Electric moves are super effective. A Geodude from Dark Cave learns Rock Throw, and a Mareep from Route 32 to the south learns Thunder Shock, but neutrally effective moves like Ember or Water Gun can work just fine. Avoid using Grass and Bug Pokémon. Falkner will use Roost often, so be ready for a long battle. Being slightly overtrained for this gym is a big help, as the more damage you can do in one turn, the more turns Falkner will waste using Roost. Step onto the wooden platform to reach the elevated walkway. This S-shaped battlefield has a Gym Trainer at each end, but it is possible to avoid both and reach Falkner immediately by traveling along the glass tiles on either side.

Violet Gym
The Zephyr Badge

Defeated, Falkner awards you the Zephyr Badge, which ensures obedience from all Pokémon up to level 20, and enables the use of Rock Smash in the field. You can now pick up the hidden Hyper Potion east of the Pokémon Academy. He also hands over TM51 (Roost) as a prize. Roost restores 50% of the user's maximum HP, and Flying-types that use it are treated as non-Flying-types until the next turn.

A lone item

Before continuing south, leave Violet City to the west. An odd tree blocks the way, but in the meantime, speak to the man to pick up HM06 (Rock Smash). Returning to town, you can smash a rock at the east side of the city to find a hidden Hyper Potion.

A Favor

Elm calls when you leave the Gym, and asks that you speak with his aide inside the Poké Mart. The aide asks that you take care of the Mystery Egg, which will eventually hatch into a Togepi with the special Extrasensory move. The professor will call again when the Egg hatches, asking to see it; visit him with Togepi as the lead Pokémon to receive an Everstone.

Kimono Girl 1

Upon leaving the Poké Mart, you meet one of the Kimono Girls, five sisters from Ecruteak City's Dance Theater. She shows an interest in the "important" Egg, and asks that you take good care of it before leaving to the south.

Route 32

Route 32

Route 32 is a lengthy, Trainer-heavy route that stretches southward along the coastline. The mysterious Ruins of Alph lie off to the northwest, but only the first of the four chambers can be accessed at this point. South of the ruins are two men standing near a hill. The first gives you a Miracle Seed, while the man on the hill hands out TM05 (Roar). A Repel can be found in the tall grass west of Picnicker Liz. Head south to reach a small inlet, and collect the Great Ball and TM09 (Bullet Seed) from the shore before reaching the Pokémon Center. Further south, a shady man offers a "tasty, nutritious SlowpokeTail" for only $1,000,000.

Union Cave

Union Cave, 1F
Union Cave, B1F

Union Cave is a cave on the south end of the peninsula. Seawater wells up from underground, preventing access to the deepest parts of the cave for now. The ground-level tunnel merely connects Routes 32 and 33.

1F

The ground-level tunnel is a fairly straightforward path. Head northwest to reach an X Attack, then detour down to B1F for TM39 (Rock Tomb) and an X Defend. Head south past two Hikers and pick up the Great Ball near Firebreather Bill. Grab the Potion sitting off to the west, then head southeast from Poké Maniac Larry to reach an Awakening, and the exit to Route 33.

B1F

Only the middle entrance is accessible now. After going downstairs, go north to find an X Defend. Check a rock directly west of the stairs to pick up a hidden X Speed, and go further west for a TM39 (Rock Tomb).

Route 33

Route 33

Route 33 is a short path that connects Union Cave to Azalea Town in the west. Rains constantly drench the landscape, which includes a single patch of grass and a small Apricorn grove.

Azalea Town

Azalea Town
