The Fortree Gym cannot be accessed when the player first arrives in Fortree City, as an invisible Kecleon is blocking the path to the Gym. Once the player has met Steven on Route 120 and received the Devon Scope from him, they can make the Kecleon move aside, allowing the Gym to be accessed.
The Gym's passages are blocked by rotating doors that turn when the player walks through them, requiring the player to backtrack and go through certain gates multiple times to access the Gym Leader (and thus in Ruby and Sapphire, none of the Gym's Trainers can be avoided). A group of ledges can be used as a shortcut to get back to the entrance.
Trainers with a PokéNav by their names will be registered in the Trainer's Eyes or Match Call function after the first battle, and may have a rematch with the player with higher-level Pokémon.

In Pokémon the Series, Fortree Gym is a tall, tower-like building with the battlefield located at the top, allowing all Flying Pokémon to use the sky to their advantage. Zachary is the Gym's assistant and referees the battles there. The philosophy of this Gym is to fly and fight.
The Fortree Gym first appeared in Who's Flying Now?, where Ash and his friends reached Fortree City. Although Ash was eager to challenge the Gym Leader to a battle right away, once he reached the top floor of the Gym, he was informed that the Gym Leader was actually in town celebrating a festival. Ash immediately rushed to the festival, where he met Winona, who agreed to have a battle with him the following day.
Ash and Winona's Gym battle occurred in Sky High Gym Battle!. After a challenging match, Ash was able to emerge victorious, earning him the Feather Badge.
The first Pokémon Winona used in her Gym battle against Ash was her Altaria. Altaria's attacks did not work against Grovyle due to its speed. It was ultimately defeated with Leaf Blade despite having the type advantage.
Winona's Pelipper was the second Pokémon she used against Ash. Ash battled with Pikachu, starting with a Thunderbolt. Pelipper countered with Steel Wing as a ground. Pelipper then used Hydro Pump, but its wing lost contact with the ground and Pikachu took advantage of its mistake to use Thunder. Both Pelipper and Pikachu were knocked out due to the damage they took.
The final Pokémon Winona used against Ash was her ShinySwellow. It was a strong battler, using powerful attacks like Aerial Ace and Hyper Beam. It defeated Ash's Grovyle easily and almost defeated Swellow as well, but with a little quick thinking on Ash's part, his Swellow was victorious, winning Ash the Feather Badge.
Winona's Swellow was the fifth Shiny Pokémon to appear in the animated series. It is also the first Shiny Pokémon owned by a Gym Leader.
The following is a list of cards mentioning or featuring Fortree City Gym in the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
Fortree Gym Cards listed with a blue background are only legal to use in the current Expanded format. Cards listed with a green background are legal to use in both the current Standard and Expanded formats.
In Generation III, it is possible to postpone this Gym until the player has the Rain Badge, since it is required to challenge the Elite Four. This possibility is even acknowledged in-game, as WallaceRS/JuanE will mention that the player needs to earn the Feather Badge in order to enter the Pokémon League in case the player doesn't have the Badge by the time they defeat him. In Generation VI, this is no longer the case, as a Bird Keeper on Route 120 will prevent the player from advancing through a certain point of the route until they have beaten Winona.
