Gliscor (Japanese: グライオン Glion) is a dual-type Ground/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves from Gligar when leveled up, at night, holding a Razor Fang.

Biology

Physiology

Gliscor are large, mainly bluish-purple vampire bat-like Pokémon. In evolution, the Gligar's leg-like claws have become more defined as legs, with two toes and a slightly darker circular coloration on the underside, and its tail now has two barbs, as opposed to Gligar's one, giving its tail the resemblance of vampire's fangs. Its arms are red with thin striations, and have also become completely detached from its wings, which are now black in coloration. It has similar looking pincers to Scizor. Gliscor’s ears now have discernible, red-colored and apparently chambered ear insides, and its eyes are yellow. Gliscor appears much toothier than Gligar, having six visible fangs in its mouth instead of two, and its waist, like its arms, is red and striated. Gliscor's body resembles an open mouth, with the pointed protrusions coming from its upper torso appearing to be fangs, further illustrating its vampiric qualities.

Special abilities

Gliscor's abilities are the same as Gligar's, except Gliscor's attacks are more powerful and it can now learn the Elemental Fang attacks. As a fully evolved Pokémon, Gliscor can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact. It is capable of soundless flight.

As shown in Riding the Winds of Change!, Gliscor, along with its unevolved form Gligar, can emit a sort of sound wave in order to detect obstacles and fly around them, similar to echolocation. However, their legs appear to be not suitable for walking and can only preform short hops when on the ground.

Behavior

Gliscor hang upside down while sleeping, much like other bat-like Pokémon. In addition to this Gliscor, unlike Gligar, are nocturnal. While Gligar eat during the day they glide back to the colony's nest at night so the Gliscor can go out and hunt. Gliscor's wings cannot be flapped to the same extent that other Pokémon's wings can. Gliscor has to use winds and updrafts to glide from place to place. Therefore it is not technically "flying". When there is no wind, Gliscor climbs to the top of tall trees using its sharp raptorial claws and then glides from place to place. This practice is similar to flying squirrels and also to the flying frogs and snakes of the Amazon and Congo Rainforests.

Habitat

They are extremely rare, but sometimes are found in thick pine forests and swamps.

Diet

It observes prey while hanging inverted from branches, and when the chance presents itself, it swoops. It uses its lengthy tail to carry off prey, afterward using its elongated fangs to "do the rest" (presumably finish it off).

Paul caught a Gliscor in Riding the Winds of Change!.

Ash's Gligar evolved into a Gliscor in Fighting Fear With Fear! using Gary's Razor Fang to save Ash from falling into a canyon. Ash left Gliscor with McCann in Mastering Current Events! so it could train and grow stronger. Gliscor later returned in DP185 to help Ash in the Suzuran Conference.

A Gliscor was used by Theodore in the Pokémon Ping Pong Tournament in To Thine Own Pokémon Be True!.

Another Gliscor appeared in An Elite Coverup! under the ownership of Bertha.

Diamond battled a wild Gliscor on his way to Iron Island. Like Bruno's Hitmonchan, it proved to be a tough opponent to beat with its Ice, Thunder, and Fire Fang moves, but was eventually beaten by Wig's Razor Leaf.

Trivia

• Gliscor and its pre-evolution are the only Pokémon to have the Ground/Flying type combination.
  • Not counting abilities, Gliscor and Gligar are the only dual-typed Pokémon that have immunity to one of their own types. (Ground moves do nothing to Template:Type2.)
  • Their type combination also makes them the only Flying-type Pokémon immune to the Template:Type2.
• Gliscor, along with its pre-evolution, is one of the few Pokémon who can only learn STAB by TMs, egg moves and move tutor, not naturally.
• In the Pokémon franchise, echolocation is often represented by the move Supersonic. As shown in the anime, Gliscor and its unevolved form, Gligar, can emit sound waves to detect obstacles and fly around them, similar to echolocation. Although neither can learn Supersonic as members of the Zubat evolutionary line can, both can learn Screech, another sound-based move.
• Gliscor is lighter than its pre-evolution, weighing in at only 93.7 lbs, while Gligar is 142.9 lbs. Although this would suggest that when Gligar evolves it becomes better adapted for flight, this is not the case.
• Gliscor is one of ten non-Bug, Template:Type2 Pokémon that cannot learn Fly.
  • On a side note, its Pokédex entry states that it can fly, and it also flies in the anime when Ash encounters one along with a pack of Gligar.
• Gliscor, along with Electivire, Magmortar, and Tangrowth, are the only Generation IV Pokémon that explicitly required the use of a Generation III game in order to be available until the release of Pokémon Platinum. In this case, Gligar are only available through dual-slot mode with Pokémon Emerald.
• Gliscor is one of only three Pokémon to have an exclamation point in one of its Pokédex entries. Girafarig and Torchic are the others, with the exclamation mark being in its Girafarig's Gold, LeafGreen, HeartGold and Stadium 2 entry, and in Torchic's HeartGold and SoulSilver entries.
  • Coincidentally, all these Pokémon but Torchic have a unique type combination, and the first/only evolution originated in Generation II.

Origin

It shares physical traits with bats, gargoyles, scorpions and vampires. It is likely based on the scorpionfly.

Name origin

Gliscor's name comes from the words glide and scorpion.

Glion is also derived from the same two words, taking the "ion" from scorpion instead of the "scor".
