-----
Cinnabar is a large island to the southwest of mainland Kanto, between Routes 20 and 21. The Cinnabar Lab, where researchers have developed a way to revive ancient Pokémon, stands to the west. A broken-down building known as Pokémon Mansion is located on the island's northwest side. The Cinnabar Gym can be found to the northeast, but is currently locked up tight.

To the northwest is the Pokémon Mansion, a building left in ruins after Mewtwo broke free of its prison and escaped.  Fortunately, the Pokémon Lab to the south was spared, so the fossil resurrection experiment is still operational.  The Cinnabar Gym is locked up tight, so Blaine is out of reach until you locate the List of key items in Generation I.

Pokémon Lab
Cinnabar Lab
Meeting Room
Meeting Room
In the first room, two of the three people are looking to trade. The old man will trade his Electrode for a Raichu, and the woman offers her Tangela for a Venonat.
Time for a Trade
In the Meeting Room, two of the three people are looking to trade. The old man offers to trade his Electrode for a Raichu, and the woman offers her Tangela for a Venonat. Electrode can be evolved from Voltorb but are rare in the wild. Tangela only makes its home in one area and is difficult to find.

R-and-D Room
R-and-D Room
In the middle room, the scientist in the back will give you 35, an attack that randomly executes any known move.
In the Research-and-Development Room, speak to the Scientist in the back to receive 35. When used, Metronome executes a randomly selected move.

Testing Room
Testing Room
In the third room, one of the scientists is willing to trade his Seel for a Ponyta.
Time for a Trade
In the Testing Room, one of the Scientists is willing to trade his Seel for a Ponyta. As Seel would have been a common sight in the Seafoam Islands, it is likely that you have caught one already, potentially making this trade less useful than others.

The scientist with speech problems is the guy to talk to about reviving fossils. Give him the Fossil to get an Omanyte, or the Fossil to receive a Kabuto.  Both are -types that lived in the primordial ocean. Turning over the Fossil results in the -type Aerodactyl, king of the prehistoric skies.

Fossil Regeneration
The Scientist near the back wall runs the fossil regeneration procedure. Speak to him to hand over the Helix Fossil, Dome Fossil, or Old Amber. The procedure takes a moment to complete, so leave the room and return a short time later to receive the ancient Pokémon. The Helix Fossil and Dome Fossil become Omanyte and Kabuto, respectively; both are Pokémon that swam the primordial seas. The Old Amber becomes the Aerodactyl, a terror of the prehistoric skies.

The key to the Gym is lying around somewhere in the decrepit building.  Also in the mansion are a handful of journal entries that describe the secret experiment that was conducted on the island.  One of the obstacles between you and the Secret Key are the Pokémon statues scattered around.  Each one has a hidden switch inside, which opens some doors and closes others when pressed.  A handful of Burglars also prowl the wreckage for abandoned items, so be on your guard.

Pokémon Mansion
The Pokémon Mansion is the decrepit, burned-down former home of a famous Pokémon researcher. The building uses several hidden switches to lock and unlock doors, and Burglars prowl the ruins for valuable items. A series of journal entries can be found scattered around the mansion that describe the birth and escape of Mewtwo.

Blaine and his crew specialize in Fires, so you can either douse them with Water attacks or put them out with Ground and Rock moves. There's always the possibility of getting burned in this red-hot Gym, so be sure to bring some Status ailment healing items along, too. It is possible to bypass each Gym Trainer by answering the quiz machines' questions correctly, but why would you want to do that?
The Cinnabar Gym specializes in Fire Pokémon. Water, Rock, and Ground moves will be the most effective. Grass-, Bug-, and Ice Pokémon should avoid battling for now. When playing with fire there is always the chance of getting Burned, so be sure to bring some Burn Heals. The Gym Leader enjoys riddles and has equipped his Gym with machines that display a quiz when examined. When each question is answered correctly, the door to the next room unlocks. This allows challengers to reach the Gym Leader sooner, but gives up the rewards of defeating his Gym Trainers.

Cinnabar Island

Cinnabar Island

Cinnabar is a large island to the southwest of mainland Kanto, between Routes 20 and 21. The Cinnabar Lab, where researchers have developed a way to revive ancient Pokémon, stands to the west. A broken-down building known as Pokémon Mansion is located on the island's northwest side. The Cinnabar Gym can be found to the northeast, but is currently locked up tight.

Cinnabar Lab

Meeting Room

Time for a Trade

In the Meeting Room, two of the three people are looking to trade. The old man offers to trade his Electrode for a Raichu, and the woman offers her Tangela for a Venonat. Electrode can be evolved from Voltorb but are rare in the wild. Tangela only makes its home in one area and is difficult to find.

R-and-D Room

In the Research-and-Development Room, speak to the Scientist in the back to receive TM35 (Metronome). When used, Metronome executes a randomly selected move.

Testing Room

Time for a Trade

In the Testing Room, one of the Scientists is willing to trade his Seel for a Ponyta. As Seel would have been a common sight in the Seafoam Islands, it is likely that you have caught one already, potentially making this trade less useful than others.

The Helix Fossil and Dome Fossil become Omanyte and Kabuto, respectively; both are Rock/Water Pokémon that swam the primordial seas. The Old Amber becomes the Rock/Flying Aerodactyl, a terror of the prehistoric skies.

Pokémon Mansion

The Pokémon Mansion is the decrepit, burned-down former home of a famous Pokémon researcher. The building uses several hidden switches to lock and unlock doors, and Burglars prowl the ruins for valuable items. A series of journal entries can be found scattered around the mansion that describe the birth and escape of a genetically-engineered Pokémon.

1F

Go to the northwest room and inspect the statue to flip a hidden switch. Backtrack and climb the stairs near the entrance.

2F

Inspect the nearest statue and flip the switch. Go northeast to find the first journal entry and a Calcium beyond that. Climb up the stairs in the northwest room.

3F

Head east to reach an Iron in the northeast room. Inspect the statue and flip the switch to open the south door, then jump off the smaller balcony to the right.

2F

Go west to find a second journal entry in the southwest room. Climb up the stairs near the statue to a separate area of the third floor.

3F (Southwest)

This dead-end area of the third floor holds a Burglar, a third journal entry, and a Max Potion. Be careful not to fight the Burglar while on the right side of the table, else you will become trapped in the corner. If trapped, use Dig or an Escape Rope, or allow the wild Pokémon to cause you to black out.

2F

Flip the switch and climb the stairs in the northwest room again.

3F

Approach the Scientist again, and this time jump off the larger balcony to the left.

1F (South)

Battle the Scientist, grab the Carbos, and take the stairs to the basement.

B1F

Visit the southern room to fight the Burglar and collect TM14 (Blizzard). The final journal entry can be found on the table here. Go west to grab the Full Restore. Inspect the statue and flip the switch. Follow the narrow hallway in the northeast to battle one last Scientist, then collect the Rare Candy and TM22 (SolarBeam) on the way westward. The Secret Key is located in the final room.

CINNABAR ISLAND
POKéMON GYM
LEADER: BLAINE

The Hot-Headed
Quiz Master!

The Cinnabar Gym specializes in Fire-type Pokémon. Water, Rock, and Ground-type moves will be the most effective. Grass-, Bug-, and Ice-type Pokémon should avoid battling for now.

The Volcano Badge

After the battle, Blaine awards you the Volcano Badge, which gives your Pokémon a slight Special boost during battle. He also gives you TM38 (Fire Blast) as a prize.

With the Cinnabar Gym defeated, surf north from the pier to reach Route 21.

Route 21

Route 21

Route 21 is an ocean route that leads from Cinnabar Island back to Pallet Town. A single patch of tall grass grows just outside of town.

Pallet Town

Having now explored nearly all of the Kanto region, it is a good time to tie up any loose ends, the most important of which is the Power Plant. To get there, fly back to Cerulean City and travel east to revisit Routes 9 and 10.

Route 10

To reach the Power Plant, use Surf to follow the river southward past the Rock Tunnel entrance. It is only a short distance away, with a single PokéManiac outside the building.
