Walkthrough:Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire/Part 17

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
These pages follow the original Game Boy Advance iteration, not Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. The guide for those games can be found here.

Route 126

Route 126
Route 126 (Underwater)
Sootopolis City

Route 126 is located near Route 124 to the north and Route 127 to the east. Much of the area is occupied by a massive crater, inside of which lies Sootopolis City.

Dive, Dive!

There seems to be no way to reach Sootopolis from the surface, so there must be an entrance elsewhere. Surf to the south side of the crater and use Dive. Deep beneath the waves, a hidden cave entrance leads into the city. Use Dive again once inside to surface inside the crater.

Sootopolis City

Known as "the mystical city where history slumbers", Sootopolis City was built inside the crater from an ancient volcanic eruption and can only be reached by sea or sky. The difficult terrain forces residents to regularly climb many flights of stairs and dive underwater, causing many to be in good physical shape. The final Gym in the Hoenn League is located here, as is the Cave of Origin, a sacred place few are permitted to enter.

Nature's Madness

The sudden and dramatic shift in weather conditions has frightened the residents into their homes. Most buildings are locked tight at the moment, including the Sootopolis Gym on an island in the middle of the crater. The Pokémon Center and Poké Mart are still open to visitors, so take the opportunity to prepare for the trial ahead.

A High-Stakes Meeting

Cross the water to reach a small bit of grassy shore on the west side. Continue northeastward from the Poké Mart to the uppermost stairway in the north-central area, where you find Steven speaking with another man. Steven is glad to see you, and asks that you listen to what his friend has to say. The man introduces himself as Wallace, the city's Gym Leader and guardian of the Cave of Origin. He points to a power emanating from the Cave of Origin as the source of the intense sunlightR/downpourS. Noticing the Red OrbR/Blue OrbS in your possession, he asks that you follow him. He leads you and Steven southward down the cliffside to the cave entrance. The two men offer words of encouragement, believing that the Orb you hold and the Pokémon by your side will help to calm the forces of nature.

Cave of Origin

The Cave of Origin is located deep beneath the north side of Sootopolis City. A sacred site, it has long been said to be the place where life begins. A great natural energy emanates from deep inside the earth, and has drawn the super-ancient Pokémon here in the hopes of its primal powers.

Entrance

There's not a moment to lose! Sprint down the first tunnel to reach the cave's interior. The darkness ahead makes Flash useful, but not required.

1F

As you advance, the cave is rocked by occasional tremors. Move in a clockwise direction and climb down the ladder in the northeast.

B1F

Follow the tunnel south and west to reach the next ladder.

B2F

Tremors continue to rattle the cave with increasing frequency, and a heavy mist sets in. Race to the south side to find the next ladder.

B3F

Collect HM07 (Waterfall) from the northwest corner, then climb down the northeast ladder.

B4F

The super-ancient Pokémon can be seen in a small pool to the south, where it cries out as you approach. Upon reaching the south side of the pool, the Red OrbR/Blue OrbS suddenly begins to glow. Its power dispels the mist, and causes the Pokémon to attack!

VS GroudonR

Groudon's Drought Ability immediately summons harsh sunlight, which increases the power of Fire attacks by 50% and cuts the power of Water moves by 50%. This behemoth excels in physical Attack and Defense, and is able to boost these stats further with Bulk Up. Begin with Grass- and Ice-type moves to wear its health down quickly, then follow up with Rock- and Poison-type moves to wear it down further before attempting capture. Bring it down before all of Hoenn goes up in flames!

VS KyogreS

Kyogre's Drizzle Ability immediately summons a rainstorm, which increases the power of Water attacks by 50% and cuts the power of Fire moves by 50%. This leviathan excels in Special Attack and Special Defense, and is able to boost these stats further with Calm Mind. Begin with Grass- and Electric-type moves to wear its health down quickly, then follow up with Ice- and Steel-type moves to wear it down further before attempting capture. Bring it down before all of Hoenn slips beneath the waves!

Madness Calmed

With the super-ancient Pokémon calmed, the skies clear and the wild weather returns to normal. It is now possible to visit with the residents, and to challenge the Sootopolis Gym.

The Big-Hearted Berry Girl

A young girl named Kiri can be found on the larger western shore. Speak to her each day to receive two Berries, determined randomly. The first is chosen from a group of ten; the second, from a group of two.

A Token of Appreciation

Visit the house to the east of the Pokémon Center, and speak to the young woman inside. The city has not had many visitors lately, so she gives you a Wailmer Doll to show her gratitude.

Brother VS Brother

The house to the northeast of the Pokémon Center belongs to a pair of brothers who cannot agree. The younger brother is a Fisherman, and the older brother is a Hiker. The Fisherman says that Barboach is larger, but the Hiker believes that Shroomish is the bigger Pokémon. If shown a Pokémon of his preferred species, each brother calculates its size, and hands out an Elixir if it breaks the current record.

Words of Encouragement

Upon reaching the island, you find Steven waiting for you outside the Gym. With the skies cleared, he thanks you for all you have done. He also thanks you on behalf of Wallace, who has now returned to his Gym. Steven warns that Wallace is strong, but that everything you have been through should leave the two of you on equal footing. He encourages you to challenge his friend, then leaves on the back of his flying Pokémon.

Leader: Wallace

Artist, and lover of water!

The Sootopolis Gym specializes in Water-type Pokémon. Water-type moves are super effective against Fire-, Ground-, and Rock-type Pokémon, while Water-type Pokémon are weak to Electric- and Grass-type moves.

The Gym features two levels. The upper level is filled with ice tiles; stepping on them once cracks them. Stepping on them a second time shatters them, leaving a challenger to fall to the snowy area below where several Gym Trainers await. There are three sections of icy floor; each icy tile must be passed over in order to clear the current puzzle and reveal the stairway to the next area.

  • Area 1: Move northeast, then northwest in a simple "S" shape (→1, ↑1, ←2, ↑1, ↑1).
  • Area 2: Go toward the northwest corner first, then to the southeast corner (←3, ↑2, →2, ↓1, →3, ↓1, →1). Move northwest from here (↑2, ←3) to clear the puzzle.
  • Area 3: Move to the southeast corner first (→2, ↑1, →2, ↓1, →1), then to the northeast corner (↑3). Zigzag westward for a short distance (←2, ↓1, ←1, ↑1, ←1), then southwest (↓2, ←2, ↓1) to pass by the stairway from Area 2. Zigzag westward again (←1, ↑1, ←1, ↓1, ←1, ↑1, ←1) to the wall, then move to the northwest corner (↑2). Zigzag eastward this time (→1, ↓1, →1, ↑1, →1, ↓1, →1, ↑1, →1) to reveal the final stairway to the Gym Leader.

Wallace leads with his Luvdisc; a speedy Pokémon, but its offenses are lacking. However, it can still trigger confusion with Sweet Kiss, and further hinder any opposite-gender opponents with Attract. As a Water/Ground Pokémon, his Whiscash takes massive damage from Grass-type attacks, but is immune to Electric moves. Rain Dance temporarily boosts the power of Water-type attacks, and Earthquake helps deter Electric-type opponents. Most of Sealeo's moves deal damage, but Encore locks the target into using its previous move again. Its Water/Ice typing gives it additional weaknesses to Fighting and Rock moves. His Seaking is better suited to physical moves, but Fury Attack is not very strong. However, using Rain Dance has a two-pronged effect: Its Swift Swim Ability doubles its Speed during rain, and powers up its Water Pulse attack. Lower-leveled Pokémon should beware of its Horn Drill! Finally, his Milotic can deal a good deal of damage with Water Pulse and fight back against Grass Pokémon with Ice Beam. High Special Defense means that physical moves are more useful, but avoid causing status ailments: its Marvel Scale Ability gives it a 50% Defense boost when suffering!

After the battle, Wallace awards you the Rain Badge, which ensures the obedience of all Pokémon and enables the use of Waterfall in the field. He also gives you TM03 (Water Pulse) as a prize.

If spoken to again, Wallace mentions that any Trainer who has gathered all eight Hoenn League Gym Badges should make their way to the Pokémon League. This ultimate destination is located in the region's easternmost reaches, on the island that houses Ever Grande City. It is possible to travel there right away, but there are several areas that have yet to be explored.
