Walkthrough:Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky/Special Episode 1

This page covers Special Episode 1, unlocked after apprehending Drowzee in the main story. It is set sometime before the game's events.

As this is the first one, it needs to be explained that Special Episodes are standalone stories which expand upon some of the characters, that can be started from the Episode List submenu on title screen (but continued normally as a separate option), and are new content added in Explorers of Sky. They involve preset party members and dungeons that, for most the part, are not available in any shape or way in the main story. Click here to return to the point in main story this Special Episode is unlocked.

Bidoof's Beginnings

The episode begins with Bidoof watching over yet another morning cheer, as he reminisces of his past, and how before you and your partner arrived at the guild, he was the newbie. To dream of becoming the best explorer in the world, he left his hometown and his family of mother, brother and sister, to start training at the Wigglytuff's Guild.

However, Bidoof realizes that the training is harder than he anticipated and he ends up making mistakes, such as bringing Doom Seed to Loudred instead of a Reviver Seed, or being so gluttonous that he eats away Guildmaster Wigglytuff's Perfect Apples.

One day, Chatot asks Bidoof to check up on Kecleon Market and how many Oran Berries they are stocking, to which Bidoof reluctantly agrees. Chatot tries to cheer him up, but he's not exactly good at it.

With the intro over, you can now control Bidoof. As the game said, you can save at Bidoof's bed in the southern crew rooms or at the Watering Hole, if you have to.

Commotion in the Town

There are some NPCs you can talk to during your way to the Kecleon Market, such as Corphish reminding Bidoof that one can save at the Watering Hole, or Team Seedgey trying to become more famous. By talking to Marowak in his currently closed Dojo, you can acquire a free Reviver Seed. Be sure to do it now, as this is the only time you can acquire this precious item for free!

Kecleon brothers are somewhat disappointed that Bidoof simply is there to check on their stock as usual, but such is life. However, not before long, Bidoof decides to speak about his insecurities as the Wigglytuff Guild member, and how wishes he was more useful. To this, the purple brother tells Bidoof about TMs and how they can make you learn new moves and become more useful, using Hidden Power as an example.

This obviously catches Bidoof's attention, however it costs a whooping 6,500 Poké! While Bidoof has just enough money saved up to buy it, he doesn't want to spend it, as it was a farewell gift from his mother for the worst case scenarios, so he decides to not spend it randomly.

As Bidoof goes away, he notices a Snover talking to himself, before he just hastily gives away something to Bidoof and then runs away further down the town. It appears that he was being chased by a Gligar and Bagon who have lost sight of him; Gligar angrily asks Bidoof, scaring him, but Bagon stops him from doing anything stupid and describes who they are looking for.

The Legendary Star Cave

On the night of this day, Bidoof finds himself unable to sleep due to Loudred's loud snoring, and instead starts reminiscing about the whole commotion. He looks at the thing he was given, and it appears to be a map marking a place called Star Cave. As excited as he is about it, he decides he needs to sleep to be ready for training tomorrow... Or at least, try.

The next day, he asks Chatot about Star Cave. Chatot, being the guild's head of intelligence, answers that it is a legendary place passed down as a rumor through generations, as nobody knows where it really is. However, it is said that at its bottom, the wish-granting Pokémon Jirachi lies. This fires up Bidoof, who thinks he can use Jirachi as a way to make his dream of becoming the best explorer ever come true. Chatot grows suspicious of Bidoof's sudden change in mood, but it is thankfully interrupted by Snover arriving at the guild's entrance.

Snover comes to thank Bidoof for his help last day with Bagon and Gligar, who were looking for the map, and requests Bidoof to escort him to Star Cave, as he himself is too weak. Bidoof agrees, but not before asking Chatot for a day off. He tries to excuse himself with a sudden stomachache, and Chatot agrees, though not without raising further suspicions. With this, Bidoof starts to think of how his wish will make him more useful at the guild.

Onwards, Towards Jirachi

Snover tells Bidoof that he should first prepare. You'd think that you do not really have any way to prepare other than grabbing that Reviver Seed from earlier, but turns out you can, somehow, take out any stored items or money you have had accumulated during the main story. This is true for every and each Special Episode, but it is more notable here, as you can go to the town to buy stuff as well. You can also store items acquired during Special Episode so that your main savefile can use them, which is useful, as certain items are available in Special Episodes before becoming available (or conversely, you can bring in items from deep into the main game to break this Special Episode's difficulty in half).

Make sure to prepare however you can, as despite being the very first Special Episode, Star Cave is no pushover: Bidoof isn't exactly strong, and you will be inconvenienced by Snover's Snow Warning summoning the damaging hail (as well as constantly interrupting you). In fact, even the developers themselves realized this made the whole thing harder than intended, and specifically increased the spawn rate of Sunny and Rainy Orbs and added them to this dungeon's shops as a countermeasure.

Bidoof starts at Lv. 10 and with the following moves, but can grow stronger over the course of the story, and can learn new moves, although this will not carry over into the main story. Snover is at Lv. 22 and has some useful moves like Powder Snow.

  • Poliwag is dangerous, as it has ranged STAB move in Bubble, and Hypnosis to put you to sleep, as well as Water Sport (not that you could use Fire moves here).
  • Anorith is low level compared to even Bidoof, and has only Scratch and Harden.
  • Chingling is also low level, but its only move is the annoying Wrap. Wrap immobilizes you and the target, dealing fixed 6HP of damage to the target every so often, which is a non-trivial amount of health at Bidoof's level.
  • Kricketot has Growl and Bide. Bide can be easily avoided if you're not cornered, but Growl might make it harder to defeat others.
  • Lotad has Astonish to make you cringe, Growl, STAB Absorb to heal itself, and Nature Power. In this dungeon, Nature Power turns into Ice Beam, which is a projectile.
  • Bonsly has Fake Tears-which lower your Sp. Def to make you more vulnerable to Bubble, Absorb, and the Ice Beam-Copycat, Flail, and Low Kick, which both Bidoof and Snover are weak to (though thankfully type weakness are less strong than STAB in this game).

You will see Kecleon Shops incredibly often for a while, and they will only carry Wonder Orbs; mostly Rainy and Sunny Orbs, as mentioned before. Additionally, after first three floors, you will start seeing held items and the thrown items on the ground, which might be able to help you get through this place.

After 7 floors, you will find a waypoint. The second section of the dungeon is only 4 floors long. There are four new enemies here:

  • Psyduck has STAB Water Gun, Scratch and Tail Whip to lower your physical Defense; making you more vulnerable to Bonsly's Flail and Low Kick, Lotad's Astonish and Gulpin's Pound, as well as Water Sport. Since it has Cloud Nine, it will at the very least stop Snover's hail for a while.
  • Gulpin has Pound, as well as Yawn to put you to sleep and Poison Gas to, well, poison you. Having to deal with poison and hail damage will likely cause Bidoof to faint, so watch out.
  • On the last floor only, Lunatone and Bronzong. Lunatone is very dangerous, having two STAB moves: special Confusion and physical Rock Throw. It also has Tackle and Harden. Bronzong meanwhile has Sunny Day, Tackle, another Hypnosis, and also STAB Confusion, making it another threatening foe.

Where's Jirachi?

After an 11-floor trek, Bidoof finds a dead end, but with no Jirachi to be found. Instead, there's Bagon and Gligar from before. Snover then comes out, confessing that the Jirachi and Star Cave story were all made up.

As it turns out, Bidoof was actually tricked and they're all working together as a band of thieves, calling themselves Team Rogue. They actually managed to get here themselves, but were disappointed to find nothing, and wound up coming to the town. It was then that they noticed Bidoof's large amount of saved up money, and decided to rob him. However, doing it in the middle of Treasure Town would be a terrible idea, so being the evil-doers they are, they stage-up the whole pursuit and make Bidoof trust their leader, only to lead him to a place far away from civilization.

And thus, a 1v3 fight starts!

As a boss, Snover is guaranteed to know Mist. The other three known moves will vary between the following: Powder Snow, Leer, Razor Leaf, Icy Wind, GrassWhistle and Swagger.

Bagon Lv.8

You're extremely outmatched in this fight. Gligar can reduce your accuracy and possibly poison you, Bagon can cause you to cringe, and Snover might have various kind of attacks; all of his offensive moves are ranged, and there's also GrassWhistle which just puts you to sleep. And of course, there's also the recurring hail damage. It is possible to win the fight if you find good Seeds on the way here... but it does not actually matter whether you win or lose, as they will beat up Bidoof regardless.

As Bidoof lies down, beaten up, he refuses to give up the money that his mother gave to him, which Team Rogue finds very stupid and stubborn. However, as they're about to make his move, the whole place suddenly turns dark and a voice calls out... before the rest of the Wigglytuff Guild surrounds them.

The guild does not like Team Rogue basically bullying Bidoof. Bagon and Gligar are understandably scared, before Snover somehow manages to foolishly convince them into not believing the Wigglytuff Guild rumors and fighting them regardless. And thus, the fight starts again, but this time it's 10v3.

Wigglytuff uses a fixed moveset. All other allies are guaranteed to know one move listed below, and their other three known moves will vary between the following:

Chatot: Peck, Growl, Mirror Move, Sing, Fury Attack, Chatter, Taunt, Mimic, Roost, Uproar and FeatherDance.

Diglett: Sand-Attack, Scratch, Growl, Astonish, Magnitude, Mud-Slap, Dig, Sucker Punch, Earth Power, Mud Bomb, Slash and Earthquake.

This is less of a fight and more of an execution, as guildmembers' levels are hilariously high. You can just stand behind and let the guild handle the fight for you. The only real risk here is that Diglett and Dugtrio can have Magnitude or Earthquake, which will hit you as well; fainting here will send you back to the waypoint.

After the guild scares the crap out of Team Rogue and makes them run off, it is revealed that Chatot was, to no one's surprise, suspicious of Bidoof's behaviour, and ended up tailing Bidoof just in case on the Guildmaster Wigglytuff's orders. Chatot at first denies that he was trying to look after Bidoof and that he supposedly thought Bidoof would abandon the guild. As it turns out, the plan was simply for Wigglytuff and Chatot to come here, but the rest of the guild got involved as well.

While Bidoof still feels bad about causing everyone trouble, no one seems to be upset about it and they're more relieved that nothing bad has happened.

Hidden Path

However, it turns out that Team Rogue were amateurs, and as some of the guild members point out, they should have double-checked the rooms. Wigglytuff uses his secret technique to reveal a pathway past what seemed like a dead end. While it ended up being a team effort, Wigglytuff forbids anyone but Bidoof from going further to meet Jirachi and have their wishes granted, as this is Bidoof's personal journey... before someone points out that Wigglytuff could have wished for Perfect Apples, which makes Wigglytuff storm off, as the rest of the guild tries to stop him.

After this, you enter the final section of the dungeon, Star Cave Depths. It is only four floors long, and it has only the four enemies that were introduced in Deep Star Cave, with the same items as at the last floors of that section. However, you're alone this time, and if you faint here, you will be sent alllll the way back to the waypoint, making you climb down Deep Star Cave once again, though without having to deal with Team Rogue a second time.

Floors 2 through 4 of Star Cave Depths have Monster Houses, a mechanic that, if you start this Special Episode immediately, has yet to be introduced in the main story. These are rooms where you will be ambushed by a large amount of enemies out of nowhere, but you can tell them apart by their unusual assortment of items: Monster Houses are the only place you will find in this dungeon TMs outside of shops and Gummis at all. Additionally, Monster Houses also generate extra trap tiles (another mechanic from later in the main story); however, Star Cave has none, so it will instead just have many Wonder Tiles. That being said, it will be a bit harder to spot them due to the darkness limiting your field of vision.

Star Cave Pit

Bidoof reaches another dead end. However, this time, it's the real deal, as after a while, he starts hearing a voice. It's Jirachi! Bidoof asks Jirachi if they really can grant a wish, but it appears Jirachi still has not fully waken up from their long sleep.

They warn Bidoof that during their sleep, they often toss and turn, attacking those nearby. This starts a fight- wait, what?!

Jirachi is guaranteed to know Helping Hand, which it will not try to use during the fight. The other three known moves will vary between the following: Wish, Confusion, Rest and Swift.

Jirachi Lv.16
HP: 165
Types:
Ability:
Held item:
None

Confusion is a STAB move, so it will hurt immensely, while Wish will make Jirachi recover HP. Rest does also does heal Jirachi, but only once the effect ends, unlike in the main series. Swift never misses but despite what you'd possibly think, it is a melee range attack as well. Due to the way the boss fights work, it will be missing one of those moves at random, so there's effectively four possible movesets, with a 75% chance to contain the dangerous Confusion.

Wonder Orbs are useless in boss fights, but Seeds are not, so if you still have something like Totter Seed, it can pacify Jirachi for a while. You can also use Vile Seeds or Violent Seeds from the Kecleon Shop. Obviously, if you still have some Reviver Seeds left for this fight, they will greatly increase your survivability. The best utility item for this fight is perhaps the Dig TM, as Bidoof can learn it; it's a two-turn where you become invulnerable on first turn, then deal a powerful blow on second turn, and since it's a Ground-type move, it is extra effective against Jirachi. While you have Growl and Defense Curl as Bidoof, none of Jirachi's moves are physical, making them useless. Don't get discouraged, this fight is not exactly in your favor!

The Wish

By depleting Jirachi's HP, you manage to wake them up, and after Bidoof introduces himself to Jirachi (again), Jirachi then asks Bidoof about his wish. There are many options to choose from, with one of them being Bidoof's actual wish. However, no matter what you choose, just about as Jirachi is to grant the wish, Bidoof stops them. During this journey, he had a realization you cannot simply wish for things, he has to work for them the hard way, by doing things one by one and learning from experiences.

Jirachi commends Bidoof for his honesty and says they have taken a liking to him. Bidoof still does have a wish he wants granted, however: a buddy (or two) to teach things to, as he is currently the newest member of the Wigglytuff Guild that is being trained by them.

It turns out, that the buddies Bidoof wished for were you and your partner, all along!

With this, the first Special Episode comes to close. Unlike the other Special Episodes, Bidoof's Wish does directly influence one thing in the main story: clearing this Special Episode is one of the two requirements to unlock its sole dungeon in the main game, although if you started this Special Episode as soon as possible, this won't happen for a long while.
