Walkthrough:Pokémon Diamond and Pearl/Part 19

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
These pages follow the original Nintendo DS iteration, not Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. The guide for those games can be found here.

Route 222

Route 222

Route 222 leads east from Valor Lakefront to Sunyshore City. The sandy beach is always busy with avid Fishermen happily casting their lines at the water's edge.

Sunyshore City

Sunyshore City was founded on a narrow stretch of rocky coastline, surrounded by the sea and mountains. Solar panels were eventually installed, serving as both power generation and a means of travel for the city to expand to the surrounding islands. The Vista Lighthouse stands tall on the southeast island, and the Sunyshore Gym, eighth in the Sinnoh League, is located in the northwest.

Catching Fire

Upon exiting the gate from Route 222, you are approached by a man with red hair. He instantly recognizes the toughness of your Pokémon, and introduces himself as Flint, one of the Pokémon League's Elite Four. He goes on to explain an idea of his that involves the local Gym Leader. There have apparently been few good challengers lately, and as a result, the Gym Leader has lost his enthusiasm for the job and spends his days renovating the Gym, which led to the recent citywide blackout. Flint asks that you give the man a battle so hot that it will lift his mood and reignite his passion for battling. He then leaves to the east.

Sunyshore Market

The Sunyshore Market is located on the west side of the city, just north of the Poké Mart. The market is famous for its wide selection of Seals from around the world. These Seals can be purchased from the man at the northwest table, with availability changing based on the day of the week.

In addition, the woman at the stall near the entrance awards an Effort Ribbon to your lead Pokémon, if it has earned 510 effort values.

Julia's house

There are two homes on the northeast island, the eastern of which belongs to a woman named Julia. Her husband is a Sailor and often spends long periods of time away from home. To help pass the time until his return, she asks that you visit occasionally and tell her stories of your travels. If you return starting tomorrow to relive tales of your adventures, she will reward you with one of seven Ribbons to be attached to your lead Pokémon. The type of Ribbon earned depends on the day of the week.

Day Ribbon Description
Monday Alert Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling an invigorating event that created life energy.
Tuesday Shock Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling a thrilling event that made life more exciting.
Wednesday Downcast Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling feelings of sadness that added spice to life.
Thursday Careless Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling a careless error that helped steer life decisions.
Friday Relax Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling a refreshing event that added sparkle to life.
Saturday Snooze Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling a deep slumber that made life soothing.
Sunday Smile Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling that smiles enrich the quality of life.

Out to Lunch

When you arrive at the Sunyshore Gym to challenge the Gym Leader, you find Flint standing outside. He informs you that the man has not yet returned, and reminds you to give him an intense battle when he does so.

Meeting the Gym Leader

The Vista Lighthouse is located on the southeast side of the city. Step inside to reach the elevator, which automatically rises to the observation deck. A blond man can be seen peering through a pair of binoculars. Speak to him, and he recognizes you as the Sunyshore Gym's latest challenger. The man declares that if he finds you weak, he intends to challenge the Pokémon League. As the renovations to the Gym are complete, he would rather go searching for battles that thrill him again. He vows that as the strongest Gym Leader in Sinnoh, he will unleash everything he has to defeat you. He then leaves through the elevator.

If examined, the binoculars show the Pokémon League building, located far to the north above a waterfall.

Igniting a Spark

Make your way to the Gym and speak to Flint outside. He informs you that the Gym Leader has returned and seemed to be feeling upbeat for a change. Flint believes that the man recognized your toughness right away, and likely can't wait to battle you. He reminds you again to give the Gym Leader a battle intense enough to reignite his love of battling. He mentions that he will be waiting at the Pokémon League, then leaves to the east.

Sunyshore Gym

Sunyshore Gym
Sunyshore City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Volkner

The Shining, Shocking Star

The Sunyshore Gym specializes in Electric-type Pokémon. Electric-type moves are super effective against Flying- and Water-type Pokémon, while Electric-type Pokémon are weak to Ground-type moves. As the Gym also features several non-Electric Pokémon, Dark-, Grass-, and Fighting-type moves will also be useful.

The Gym features large gears and exposed electricity. Challengers must step on buttons in the floor to rotate these gears and create a path forward. Blue buttons rotate their gears by 90 degrees clockwise, green buttons rotate their gears 90 degrees counterclockwise, and red gears rotate by 180 degrees. In the first room, there are two green buttons. Step on the eastern button first, then the western one, and battle School Kid Tiera. In the second room, step on the southern blue button three times, then walk up the southwest stairway and cross over the gear there. Battle School Kid Forrest in the northeast corner, then step on the northern blue button once. Step on the green button next, then battle Guitarist Jerry. Climb the eastern stairway and battle Poké Kid Meghan to reach the third room. Once there, step on the eastern red button first, then the western one. Battle Ace Trainer Destiny, then walk along the west wall to battle Guitarist Preston in the northwest corner. Step on the green northwest button twice, then the blue button to the east. Walk down the stairway to battle Ace Trainer Zachery, then pass by Guitarist Lonnie again. Step on the eastern red button, then backtrack along the east wall to reach the Gym Leader.

VS Volkner

Volkner leads with his Raichu, an Electric-type Pokémon. Charge Beam deals damage and is likely to raise its Special Attack, letting the move hit harder the next time. Light Screen halves the damage done by special moves, but avoid using just any physical move instead, as its Static Ability may paralyze the foe on contact. Though not an Electric-type Pokémon, his Ambipom can be just as dangerous. Nasty Plot and Agility raises its Special Attack and Speed, respectively, and Baton Pass lets it pass these changes to its next teammate. Shock Wave never misses its target, and receives a power boost from its Technician Ability. Octillery, a Water-type Pokémon, lets Volkner fight back against Ground-type Pokémon that might otherwise have the advantage. Both Octazooka and Aurora Beam benefit from Charge Beam's possible power boost, while they and Bullet Seed all deal serious damage to Ground Pokémon. Volkner's final Pokémon, Luxray, has high physical Attack. Crunch may lower the target's physical Defense, allowing it and Thunder Fang to hit harder than normal. Be aware of its Rivalry Ability, which lets it deal increased damage to other male Pokémon and decreased damage to female Pokémon.

After the battle, Volkner exclaims that this was the most fun he's had in a battle in ages. He awards you the Beacon Badge, which enables the use of Waterfall in the field. Having all eight Badges also ensures the obedience of all Pokémon, regardless of level. He also gives you TM57 (Charge Beam) as a prize.

The Steel-Clad Defense Girl

With the Sunyshore Gym defeated, take a moment to rest at the Pokémon Center before heading north. Speak to the woman on the beach, and she mentions how the city makes her feel at home somehow, as it is next to the sea and features a lighthouse. Noticing your new Beacon Badge, she realizes that you must be a strong Trainer. To reward your training, she gives you HM07 (Waterfall), a field move that is essential for reaching the Pokémon League to the north.

Route 223

Route 223

Route 223 leads north from Sunyshore City to the island that holds the Pokémon League. This stretch of ocean is littered with rocks and sandbars, forcing travelers to navigate around these obstacles to proceed. It is a favorite training spot for Swimmers.
