The Secret Medicine (Japanese: ひでんのくすり Secret Medicine), called Secret Potion until Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and formatted as SecretPotion prior to Generation VI, is a Key Item introduced in Generation II.
Terminology
In Generation II games, the appearance of this item had not yet been established due to the lack of item sprites. The Japanese name 「ひでんのくすり」 (Secret Medicine) does not indicate exactly what kind of medicine is this item. It was initially translated in English as "SecretPotion" (which fits the 12 character limit for item names in early games) or "Secret Potion" in later games. For comparison, the Japanese word 「くすり」 (Medicine) is also used for the Potion, Super Potion, Hyper Potion, Max Potion, and Full Restore, which are usually depicted as substances stored in spray bottles.
In Generation IV games, the sprite for this item was introduced, depicting it as a pouch of pills. The item name "SecretPotion" or later "Secret Potion" remained in use, until it was translated as "Secret Medicine" in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
