The semifinal battle of the Manalo Conference between Kiawe and Gladion continues. During the battle, it was between Kiawe's Marowak and Gladion's Lycanroc. After Marowak was knocked out, Turtonator was used next and was able to learn Focus Blast in the process, which knocked out Lycanroc. After that happen, Gladion sent out his next Pokémon, Silvally. The Class Pokémon cheer while Lillie and Mimo cheer for their brothers. Kiawe and Gladion are both determined to win this battle as they have a flashback of Ash's Rowlet defeating Hau's Decidueye and want to face Ash in the finals.

Silvally uses Air Slash while Turtonator uses Flamethrower to intercept. Silvally uses Crush Claw as Turtonator uses Dragon Tail and the attacks canceled each other. Silvally uses Crush Claw again and Turtonator uses Shell Smash to increase its attack and speed as it avoided Silvally's Crush Claw, which results in getting its claw stuck in the field. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Kiawe performs his Z-Move Inferno Overdrive. However, at the last second, Gladion throws a disc at Silvally. Despite the overwhelming power of the Z-Move, Silvally appears relatively unharmed, revealing that it has changed to Fire-type after obtaining the Fire Memory from Gladion at the last second. Gladion orders Silvally to use Crush Claw on the weakened Turtonator and despite Kiawe's attempt to counterattack with Dragon Tail, Crush Claw hits and results in Turtonator fainting. Thus, the judge Olivia declares Gladion as the winner. Recalling each of their Pokemon, Gladion and Kiawe shake hands, with Kiawe even saying that Gladion is his new rival and he won't lose to him. This interaction moves Olivia to tears, while Guzma in a distant location scoffs at the battle's outcome.

As Guzma walks away for his next battle with Ash, Plumeria recalls a moment when she was sifting through Guzma's "mess", discovering several second-place trophies and commenting that Guzma would not act the way he does if "[they] were victory trophies". During the intermission, Team Rocket continues selling doughnuts to build a new mech to steal Pokemon. Meanwhile, Bewear and her child continue to enjoy themselves in their spa and food provided by Team Rocket's Oranguru robot.

The scene then cuts to the Team Skull grunts Tupp, Rapp, and Zipp finding their boss to cheer him on. They find Ash and his friends and engage them in a verbal confrontation cut short by Plumeria and Guzma's intervention. As Tupp complains to his boss, Guzma and Ash exchange glares, with Guzma walking away.

With a jubilant crowd, the semifinals battle between Guzma and Ash commences. Guzma sends out his Scizor, while Ash sends out his Torracat. As the judge, Nanu, officially begins the battle, Torracat attempts to land a Fire Blast on the Scizor, but Guzma orders it to use U-Turn, which causes the Bug-type Pokemon to return to its Pokeball and have Golisopod replace it in battle and take the move. Guzma then commands Golisopod to use Liquidation, while Ash tells his Torracat to dodge the move. However, Golisopod anticipates the dodge and still hits the Liquidation. Rotom then notes that Scizor's Bug/Steel type makes it significantly weak to Fire-type moves, so Guzma used U-Turn to switch in Golisopod, a Water-type with an advantage against Fire types.
