This article is incomplete. Please feel free to edit this article to add missing information and complete it. Reason: Mechanics for Gen VII, if different |
A Repel (Japanese: スプレー Spray) is an item which lets the player walk a certain number of steps without encountering wild Pokémon with a lower level than the first conscious member in the player's party. It is manufactured by Silph Co., and is sold in most Poké Marts. Its design is that of an aerosol spray and is similar to insect repellent. It is available in three strengths.
From Black 2 and White 2 onward, a dialog pops up after a Repel runs out, asking if the player wants to use another one.
If traded into Pokémon Colosseum or XD, although wild Pokémon do not appear except in Poké Spots, Repels still have the "use" option. If the player attempts to use one, the message "This item cannot be used in the Orre Region" will be displayed instead.
Repels can be used to only encounter certain wild Pokémon using a method known as the Repel trick.

In the anime
A Max Repel appeared in Climbing the Tower of Success! as an item looked for during a scavenger hunt.
In SM029, Lillie mentioned having used Max Repels to keep wild Pokémon away from herself while camping in a forest with Ash and the rest of her classmates. This inadvertently ended up protecting her from a wild Morelull that attacked everybody else and drained their energies.
In the manga
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
A Bug Catcher was seen using a Repel before entering a forest full of Bug Pokémon in Wake Up—You’re Snorlax!.
A Repel made a brief appearance as one of the items in Red's Bag in A Hollow Victreebel.
Trivia
- The Super Repel is more cost-effective than the Max Repel. The Super Repel gives one step per $3.5 ($2.5 prior to Generation VII) while the Max Repel gives one step per $3.6 ($2.8 prior to Generation VII). However, when buying Max Repels in bulk from a Join Avenue market, they could be cheaper than the same amount of Super Repels at a Poké Mart.
