Mareep (Japanese: メリープ Merriep, German: Voltilamm, French: Wattouat) is an Electric-type Pokémon.
Pokédex entries
- Pokémon Gold / Pokémon LeafGreen
- If static electricity builds in its body, its fleece doubles in volume. Touching it will shock you.
- Pokémon Crystal
- It stores lots of air in its soft fur, allowing it to stay cool in summer and warm in winter.
- Pokémon Emerald
- Its fluffy wool rubs together and builds a static charge. The more energy is charged, the more brightly the lightbulb at the tip of its tail glows.
Name origin
Mareep's name appears to be a combination of the word Mary — as in the girl who owned a little lamb in the nursery rhyme — and sheep. The French meaning is corruption of Cotton Watt. It's also a fun play on words since Watt and ouat are pronounced exactly the same way.
It appears to be simply based on a sheep, although it might borrow its electric aspect from the way wool builds up static charges.
