The Trainer House is a two-story building, located in Viridian City, in the Kanto region of the Generation II and IV games. While its purpose is never clearly defined, it is most likely to allow players to battle different people under controlled conditions. During the Generation I and III games, however, this is the location of Kanto's Pokémon academy.
In Generation II
Players will battle one trainer. This trainer will either be Cal, if the player has never used Mystery Gift with anyone, or the last player he or she has used Mystery Gift with. If it is Cal, his team will consist of the final forms of all three Johto starter Pokémon at level 50. If the player has used Mystery Gift with anyone, they will be the opponent and their team will consist of whatever Pokémon that was in their party at the time of the Mystery Gift, including held items, moves, levels, and so on. However, if the player used Mystery Gift with Carrie from Pokémon Stadium 2, they will face her, instead of Cal. She will battle with one of three teams chosen at random. The team will remain the same until the player uses Mystery Gift with her again. No matter what, the opponent trainer's sprite will always be of Gold.
In Generation IV
The player will initially encounter only Ace Trainer Cal. However, because Mystery Gift no longer requires communicating with other players, more trainers can be encountered through the use of the PokéWalker. Up to 10 trainers may be encountered in this way. When the player meets someone in the PokéWalker and re-syncs it back to the player's game, the trainer and their Pokémon will appear in the basement. Unlike Generation II, levels are not retained and all battles take place at level 50, just like a Wi-Fi battle.
Layout
Ground floor
On entry, the first floor has a few people and a large table. Speaking to the woman behind the desk enables entry into the lower basement, where a lone trainer can be found.
Basement
Generation II
The room is mostly comprised of a large open area with only a desk located at the top of the room and an open battlefield on the lower portion. The game takes control of the player, leading them to where the player is automatically engaged in their battle against their opponent. After the battle, the game once again takes control of the player, taking them back to the desk. After the battle, the player cannot re-enter the battlefield until the next day.
Generation IV
The basement is nearly identical to its Generation II version, only with updated graphics. The biggest change is the player is no longer controlled by the game and is allowed to walk freely. This allows the player to battle with multiple people.
