Treasure Hunting
Visit the gate on the route's east side and speak to the Scientist. He happens to be one of Professor Oak's aides and has been tasked with evaluating your Pokédex progress. If you have caught at least 30 different species, he rewards you with the Itemfinder. Using this machine reveals any items that may be hidden nearby.

After pulling the plug on Lt. Surge, your next destination is Lavender Town.  The quickest way is to go east through 11 and then north through 12, but a sleeping Snorlax is blocking the road.  Visiting the guardhouse is still a good idea, since one of Oak's aides will give out the Item Finder (if you've caught 30 or more different Pokémon).  Check the lone shrub near the guardhouse to find an Escape Rope.  The last point of interest is a kid on the second floor of the guardhouse who will trade his Nidorina for your Nidorino.
Time for a Trade
<br>
The boy near Oak's aide wants a Nidorino, and is willing to trade his Nidorina for one. Both Pokémon can be obtained elsewhere without trading, but Nidorina may be harder to find for some Trainers than others.
With Route 11 blocked, you have to take the long way around to Lavender Town.  Walk back towards Vermilion, but take a detour through Diglett's Cave instead.  Like the name says, this is the only home of Diglett and Dugtrio.  Since Flyings are immune to Ground attacks, this is a great time to give your aerial fighters (like Pidgey, Spearow, and Zubat) some experience.  This underground tunnel connects to 2, emerging between Viridian Forest and Pewter City.

Diglett's Cave
Diglett's Cave is a long tunnel that spans nearly the whole region, linking 11 to the east side of 2. Like the name implies, the only Pokémon that can be found here are Diglett and its evolved form, Dugtrio.

Time for a Trade
Visit the northeast house and speak to the man inside. He is looking to get an Abra, and is willing to trade his Mr. Mime to get one. Abra can be found near Cerulean City, though their tendency to Teleport makes them difficult to capture. Mr. Mime is a unique Pokémon that cannot be found anywhere else.

Let There Be Light
Use Cut and continue south to reach the gate, where another of Oak's aides is waiting for you. As a reward for capturing at least 10 different species, he gives out 05. This move makes it easier to navigate the dark interior of certain underground areas.

From here, you may want to revisit Viridian City to get 42 from the man near the pond.

Pewter City
Pewter Museum of Science
On this latest visit to Pewter City, you can use Cut to clear the small tree on the northeast hill to reach the employee-only area of the museum. Speak to the Scientist standing next to the table to receive the Old Amber. There are Scientists elsewhere who have apparently developed a way to regenerate Pokémon from ancient bits of DNA like this.

Route 2
Fork in the Road
The next step is to return to Cerulean City. There are two ways to get back there: either travel east through Mt. Moon again, or hike back through Diglett's Cave and head north from Vermilion City. Once back in Cerulean City, make your way to the east side of town and use Cut to clear the small tree and continue eastward.

The guy inside the only house here is looking for an Abra.  If you've got one to spare from 24, you can swap it here for a Mr. Mime, a rare Psychic.  Leave the house and cut down the nearby tree to head south.  Inside the guardhouse, you'll find another of Professor Oak's aides - this one will give you 05 if you've caught 10 different species. That shouldn't be any problem, since you needed 30 kinds to get the Item Finder.  Pick up the Vitamin and the Moon Stone further south, and since it's nearby, stop by Viridian City.  Once you cut the tree down in the southwest area and get 42, trek back to Pewter City.
Route 9
! Trainers
Back in town, you can now enter the employee-only area of the Museum, so cut down the tree and head on in. Talk to the scientist next to the pedestal to get the Old Amber - taking this to the Pokémon Lab on Cinnabar Island will result in an Aerodactyl.
|-

With that done, now you're headed back to Cerulean City. There are two options: wander through Mt. Moon again, or take the tunnel back past Vermilion City.

Route 11

Route 11
Diglett's Cave

Route 11 is a grassy path between Vermilion City and Route 12 to the east. The southeastern end of Diglett's Cave can be found here, and leads back to Route 2.

Time for a Trade

The boy near Oak's aide wants a Nidorino, and is willing to trade his Nidorina for one. Both Pokémon can be obtained elsewhere without trading, but Nidorina may be harder to find for some TrainersR than othersB.

Diglett's Cave

Diglett's Cave is a long tunnel that spans nearly the whole region, linking Route 11 to the east side of Route 2. Like the name implies, the only Pokémon that can be found here are Diglett and its evolved form, Dugtrio.

Route 2 (East)

Route 2

The east side of Route 2 was initially inaccessible without HM01 (Cut). The northwestern end of Diglett's Cave emerges here.

As a reward for capturing at least 10 different species, he gives out HM05 (Flash). This move makes it easier to navigate the dark interior of certain underground areas.

From here, you may want to revisit Viridian City to get TM42 (Dream Eater) from the man near the pond.

Route 9

Route 9

Route 9 is a rocky, uneven mountain road that links Cerulean City and Route 10.

Route 10 (North)

Route 10

Route 10 connects Route 9 to Lavender Town in the south. Much of the route is occupied by a river and the grounds of the Kanto Power Plant. Anyone traveling through the area must venture through the dim interior of Rock Tunnel. A remote Pokémon Center near the cave gives Trainers a chance to prepare themselves.
