Characteristics

Defensively, the Ground-type is mediocre. Water-type attacks and Pokémon are common, and the other two weaknesses don't help. The resistance to Rock and immunity to Electric are a plus.

Offensively, the Ground-type is one of the best in the game. It scores super effective hits against the common Electric-, Fire-, and Poison-types as well as the Rock- and Steel-types which are normally very strong against physical attacks. It scores quadruple damage on Steel/Rock Pokémon, which are resistant to most types. The two types resistant to Ground-type attacks are rare, and the Flying-type's immunity to Ground is one of the main reasons Flying-type Pokémon are so useful. Earthquake is one of the most commonly used moves in the metagame for these reasons, and it is usually backed up with a strong Ice-, Rock- or Electric-type move to counter the Flying-type.
