Trivia
- There was initially some misinformation on some Pokémon websites, claiming that Shellos was the pre-evolved form of Lapras.
- When Serebii.net revealed Shellos's English name, the site originally interpreted its name as "Snelios" or "Shelios" due to poor image quality.
- According to an interview in Nintendo Power, Shellos and Gastrodon were originally designed for Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, but were not implemented in the final design.
- Both Shellos and Gastrodon also have a third form in the data, however, no Shellos or Gastrodon can be captured with this form.
- No in-game trainer uses the eastern species in battle, even if the trainer's current location is east of Mt. Coronet, where only the blue species could be caught.
- In DP055, Professor Oak's lecture is about Shellos. He writes this Pokémon senryū about it: カラナクシ にしとひがしで いろちがい Karanakushi, nishi to higashi de, iro chigai "Karanakushi, the Western and the Eastern are, alternate colored"
Origin
Shellos is based on a sea slug.
Name Origin
Its English name appears to be a pun on Shell and the suffix -less, as Shellos does not have a shell. The Japanese name Karanakushi literally translates to "a snail without a shell." Its German name, Schalellos, comes from schalenlos. Its French name, Sancoki, comes from sans coquille. Korean name comes from words 'shell' (껍질, kkapgil) and 'without' (무, 無, moo).
