Pokémon world locations |
The Cave of Origin (Japanese: めざめのほこら Shrine to Awakening) is a cave near the north end of Sootopolis City. It is guarded by Wallace of Sootopolis Gym and is said to be the cave where life begins. Its opposite landmark is Mt. Pyre, said to be the place where life ends.
In the Cave, the player will discover Groudon or Kyogre (depending on the version) in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire after an encounter at the Seafloor Cavern and a faceoff against Team Magma or Team Aqua.
Residents of Sootopolis are not permitted to enter the Cave of Origin.
In Pokémon Emerald, the Cave of Origin is where Wallace can be found debating where Rayquaza is located, until the player gives him a hint that it is at Sky Pillar. However the player cannot enter the cave after this incident.

Trivia
- In Ruby and Sapphire, the player can reenter the cave after capturing or defeating Groudon/Kyogre. Whereas in Pokémon Emerald, the entrance is blocked for the rest of the game after talking to Wallace.
- The Cave of Origin is one of only three areas in Hoenn that need to use Flash, the others being Granite Cave and Victory Road. However, this requirement was lifted in Pokémon Emerald.
- In the Prima official Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen game guide, certain Pokémon are said to be found in the Cave of Origin. These include Pineco, Miltank, and Shuckle. As the Cave of Origin is a Hoenn-exclusive area, the guide may have intended that Altering Cave, which can be found in FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald, was mentioned, rather than the Cave of Origin.
