Walkthrough:Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky/Chapter 21/Optional content

Main article: Walkthrough:Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky/Chapter 21

This page lists most of the optional content unlocked to the player in the Explorers of Sky after defeating the boss of Mystifying Forest and completing the graduation exam. This does not cover any of the five Zero Isle dungeons, the four dungeons unlocked by achieving high Explorer Rank, nor Destiny Tower, due to their higher difficulty. New recruits await to join your team by backtracking!

New Pokémon in Old Places

Most of these are Pokémon that you or your partner could become, and as such were discussed at the very beginning of this walkthrough. Donphan does have actual moveset unlike Phanpy, with STAB Magnitude and Earthquake, as well as Fire Fang and Thunder Fang.

Froslass is completely new, however. It is similar to Snorunt's other Evolution moveset-wise, with some minor differences:

  • Astonish instead of Bite
  • Confuse Ray instead of Headbutt
  • STAB Ominous Wind in place of Protect; this gives it two room-clearing moves with STAB, very useful.
  • Can learn some Electric-type TMs like Thunderbolt and Shock Wave in place of Dark Pulse

Its only Ability is Snow Cloak, which it can benefit from thanks to it naturally learning Hail. However, despite being a Ghost-type, it cannot actually move through walls... also since its base recruitment rate is -10%, you won't actually be to recruit it right now without gaining some item to boost the odds.

Recruits Now Allowed!

When you last visited Steam Cave, Treeshroud Forest, Brine Cave, and Mystifying Forest, these dungeons did not allow recruiting. This has now changed; if you're trying to collect 'em all, each dungeon has at least one species that cannot be recruited in any other dungeon.

Steam Cave

  • Farfetch'd: G IQ group. Gets STAB Fury Attack, Swords Dance, and Agility all by level 31. Its exclusive item lets it ignore Ghost-type immunities, which means Fury Attack is even more useful. It does also learn Poison Jab and Night Slash via level.
  • Yanma: Same deal as in Lush Prairie.
  • Snubbull/Granbull: B IQ group. Exclusive items are chance to not use PP and converting Fighting-type damage into healing. Most of the useful moves are learned early, so you can just use Electivire's Move Relearner: the elemental fangs, Charm, Scary Face, Bite, and Lick. Since it's a Normal-type, it does also have some useful TM compatibility: Water Pulse, Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, Shock Wave, Sludge Bomb, or Dig. It can also surprisingly learn Overheat, but that move penalizes your Sp. Atk upon use, so it's pretty niche despite hitting everyone around you. However, Snubbull's Run Away is a pretty terrible Ability unless you're controlling the Pokémon yourself. Granbull is mostly the same, but it does also get Focus Blast via TM and swaps Run Away for the much more useful Quick Feet (which due to the way it activates means that Granbull can never be slowed down).
  • Slugma: E IQ group. As it levels up it will get Recover, Lava Plume and Earth Power; at this level it does get access to Yawn. The exclusive items give it 10% more EXP and convert Water-type damage into healing.
  • Magby/Magmar: C IQ group. Gets SmokeScreen, Confuse Ray, Flamethrower and Sunny Day all via level-up, can even get Focus Punch via TM. Is one of the non-hero or partner Pokémon to have 1 and 2-star items. The 3-star items give it +2PP to all moves, extra Movement Speed in the sun, and healing from Water-type moves (though its Water weakness is less severe). Magmar is more of the same, though it gets access to Focus Blast via TM like Granbull... and Psychic, for some reason.
  • Numel: E IQ group. Gets Magnitude, Earthquake and Earth Power, as well as Lava Plume, Flamethrower and Focus Energy for crits. Exclusive items raise max HP by 10 and (once again) convert Water-type damage into healing.
  • Kricketune: G IQ group. Gets Sing, STAB Fury Cutter, Focus Energy and eventually X-Scissor, Screech, Bug Buzz (hits adjacent tiles) and the dreaded Perish Song. Do keep in mind that Sky uses mostly Platinum movesets, so the last two moves are learned quite later. Being a Bug-type, it also gets the room-hitting Silver Wind via TM. Exclusive items raise max HP by 10 and convert Flying-type damage into healing.
  • Shuckle: Recruitable in Lush Prairie, but as a reminder, most of its level-up moveset is status moves, with its only attacking moves being Constrict, Bide, Wrap and Bug Bite, though it can also learn Dig and Sludge Bomb via TM.
  • Volbeat: F IQ group. Volbeat has moves for supporting role: Confuse Ray, Moonlight for decent team heaing and Helping Hand. But it also learns Tail Glow, Signal Beam and Bug Buzz via level and is compatible with Thunderbolt, Shock Wave, Water Pulse, Shadow Ball and of course Silver Wind TMs. Illuminate could help spawn enemies faster if you are looking for a rare recruit. Its exclusive item has the rare effect of affecting money drops in the dungeons.
  • Illumise: F IQ group. Similarly, Illumise can fill either a support role due to learning Moonlight, Charm, Flatter and Helping Hand, but also a more offensive one, since it learns Bug Buzz, has similar TM compatibility, and Tinted Lens means that Bug's bad offensive type matchup matters less. Its exclusive item has the rare effect of affecting Box drops in the dungeons.

Treeshroud Forest

  • Kadabra/Alakazam: F IQ group. Good deal of their level-up movesets are just Psychic STAB moves, with none that have range, though they also get Disable, Recover and for Alakazam only, Calm Mind. This can be patched up a bit with TMs, as they learn Energy Ball, Shadow Ball and Shock Wave for range. Their exclusive items prevent their moves from being sealed, can cause attacker's move to be sealed, and convert Dark-type damage into healing.
  • Ralts/Kirlia: F IQ group. Somewhat more status move oriented than the two above, with Imprison, Charm and Hypnosis in the level-up moveset (also Magical Leaf). They don't learn Energy Ball via TM, but can be taught Thunderbolt instead. Their exclusive items add 2PP to moves, apply passive Miracle Eye effect, and convert Dark and Ghost-type damage into healing. Gardevoir cannot be recruited in a dungeon, so you probably want to get another Kirlia here. Gardevoir doesn't get Lucky Chant or Charm, replacing it with Wish and the less useful Captivate; however, it also gets Healing Wish (restores all HP and cures status of other members in the room, but cuts user's HP to 1; can synergize with Wish which will heal the user).
  • Cherrim: Evolution of Cherubi that was in Foggy Forest. Moveset-wise it is almost the same, with new move in Petal Dance. The big difference is its unique Ability, Flower Gift, which gives +1 to team's Attack and Special Defense if it's sunny, and Cherrim learns Sunny Day via level-up, so it can easily support team in this way, on top of Helping Hand. Though it does lose the double moves that Cherubi has with Chlorophyll, meaning it's less useful offensively on its own. Also, Cherrim has body size of 2, for whatever reason.
  • Houndoom: C IQ group. One of the few Pokémon that can learn Beat Up via level, which summons your team members to your location; useful if somehow you get separated. Gets 3 moves that can flinch: Thunder Fang, Fire Fang and Bite, as well as Flamethrower like many Fire-types. It can also learn Shadow Ball, Sludge Bomb, and of course Dark Pulse via TMs for extra range. Additionally its Abilities grant it one of the few true immunities in the game and make it wake up faster from sleep-related conditions, which in this game can be a dangerous status. Its exclusive items can cause cringing on attackers and convert Fighting-type damage into healing.
  • Ninetales: Evolved form of the Vulpix starter. Since it's a stone Evolution, it doesn't learn any moves via level-up besides what it starts with, though at least a bunch of what Vulpix learns is also a TM. Unfortunately, you need to evolve Vulpix to get the useful Imprison move.
  • Vespiquen: Evolution of Combee from Apple Woods; however, it has an actual moveset unlike Combee. It gets Confuse Ray, Pursuit, Toxic and Swagger on the status move side, STAB Fury Cutter, Fury Swipes, and eventually STAB room-hitting move with increased critical hit ratio that is Attack Order; though it can also learn Sludge Bomb and Silver Wind via TM.

Brine Cave

  • Seel/Dewgong: H IQ group. Gets Icy Wind, Ice Shard, Aurora Beam and Aqua Jet via level-up, though Seel is not Ice-type yet, and like many Water-types, it is compatible Water Pulse, Ice Beam and Blizzard TMs. Dewgong also gets Signal Beam and Sheer Cold. Exclusive items let it sometimes restore PP on hit and convert Rock-type damage into healing (which is more relevant for Dewgong).
  • Omanyte: E IQ group. Learns Rollout and eventually Rock Blast as well for STAB multi hit moves. It also gets AncientPower, Protect and Mud Shot via level-up. Thanks to its Abilities, it will never be crit and can attack twice in rain, though it itself doesn't learn Rain Dance. Its exclusive items cause it to ignore Reflect and Light Screen (which agian, is very niche) and convert Grass-type damage into healing (covering its double weakness).
  • Kingler: Evolved form of Krabby from Craggy Coast, works basically the same.
  • Pelipper: Another Evolution of a Pokémon found in Craggy Coast. However, its level-up moveset is basically completely different past Roost (while also getting Payback instead of Quick Attack) - it learns Tailwind instead of Agility several levels later, among other things. It does naturally get Protect. However, it has base -12% recruit rate, meaning that your current level is unlikely to be high enough to be able to recruit it without using the held items that boost the rate further.
  • Gastrodon (West): We've seen the other one at Craggy Coast, they work identically.
  • Tentacool: C IQ group. Learn Supersonic, BubbleBeam, Water Pulse and Screech. Clear Body makes it immune to annoying moves like Charm or Screech. Its exclusive items can inflict attackers with Shadow Hold condition and convert Psychic-type damage into healing.
  • Staryu: C IQ group. Learns Recover, as well as BubbleBeam, plus one of the few Water-types to be compatible with Thunderbolt (while it has less range than Blizzard, it is more accurate and has more PP). Its exclusive items increase natural HP recovery and convert Dark-type damage into healing.
  • Dragonair: Another case of Evolution of a recruit found in Craggy Coast; like Kingler, Dragonair's moveset is similar to Dratini's. Do note there's no dungeon where you can directly recruit Dragonite; levelling and evolving this one is the quickest way. Dragonite gets Fire Punch, ThunderPunch and Roost at low levels, as well as Wing Attack on Evolution level, and can learn Fighting-type TMs like Focus Punch or Focus Blast.
  • Walrein: The final Evolution of Spheal and Sealeo found in Craggy Coast. Once again, its moveset is similar to the previous stages.

Mystifying Forest

Do keep in mind for now and future that whenever you recruit someone, their IQ gets reset to zero, regular enemies and bosses alike.

  • Bulbasaur/Ivysaur/Chikorita/Bayleef/Turtwig/Grotle/Torterra: The Grass-type starters, except for Treecko line, which is found somewhere else. The Evolutions work roughly the same, though Torterra gets Wood Hammer and Earthquake. Note that the evolved forms have pretty low base recruitment rates, meaning that right now, your level alone isn't enough to recruit them.
  • Metapod: We've already seen Caterpie and Butterfree in Apple Woods, and finally here's the middle stage... it doesn't get much. If you want to use this line, Butterfree is the best one by a long shot. Also for whatever reason, its recruitment rate is well into negatives.
  • Rattata/Raticate: F IQ group. Gets access to Super Fang, which just cuts target's HP in half, as well as Focus Energy, and STAB Hyper Fang. Via TMs they can also get Thunderbolt, Shock Wave, Blizzard, Shadow Ball and Dig due to being Normal-types. Raticate also gets Scary Face and Swords Dance via level-up. However, they have Run Away as ability, making them less reliable as an ally. Their exclusive items make them ignore Reflect and Light Screen, and convert Fighting-type damage to healing.
  • Nidoran♀/Nidoran♂: The basic form of Nidorino/Nidorina seen at Mt. Bristle, just... at a much higher level.
  • Spearow: D IQ group. Gets STAB Fury Attack, Mirror Move, Pursuit and Agility, which gives it some utility. Its exclusive items increase its Evasion by 2 stages when there's no weather and converts Rock-type damage into healing.
  • Venonat: The basic form of Venomoth found at Mt. Horn; similar moveset, but it can't learn Silver Wind or Bug Buzz, but in exchange it has CompoundEyes instead of Shield Dust, making its moves like Sleep Powder more accurate. Speaking of Venomoth, at this point you should have high enough level to put its recruitment rate into positives at this point, although it's less than 1% without some items to further boost it.
  • Bellsprout/Weepinbell: G IQ group. Similarly to Bulbasaur, they have Sleep Powder, Razor Leaf and Sweet Scent, but also Stun Spore for things that are immune to sleep (and with higher IQ in postgame dungeons, this will be more common). Of course, as per usual, they also have access to STAB Bullet Seed and Sludge Bomb via TM. Their exclusive items halve damage from explosions, cause any Berry or Apple to heal 10HP, and convert Fire-type damage to healing. Your current level is not enough on its own to be able to recruit Weepinbell though.
  • Exeggcute: If you didn't unlock the optional Lush Prairie during main story, this is the first dungeon that has this Pokémon.
  • Koffing: E IQ group. The species of one of the members of Team Skull, it has access to Smokescreen, one of the few to learn Haze via level-up (which resets all stats in the room, both of enemies and allies), Sludge Bomb, and at a high enough level, Memento. It can also learn Thunderbolt, Flamethrower and Shock Wave via TMs if you need range on your attacks. Its Levitate Ability gives it one of the few true immunities in the game. Its exclusive items cause attackers to be sometimes inflicted with Blinker status and convert Psychic-type damage into healing (covering its other type weakness).
  • Scyther: D IQ group. Has Focus Energy, STAB Fury Cutter, Agility, Pursuit, and eventually X-Scissor and Swords Dance all via level-up. While it does learn False Swipe, this move here is completely useless, as you do need to knock out the target to recruit it. Being a Bug-type, it is also compatible with Silver Wind TM. Technician in this game is not clear due to the discrepancies in power, but since Sky is the first game to actually display some measure of move's power in-game, it affects all moves who have only 3 stars in power. Do keep in mind this Ability does take Ginseng boosts into account. Another species that has a full set of exclusive items; its 3-star make it immune to thrown items and convert Flying-type damage into healing.
  • Eevee: Another species that was available to start with.
  • Aipom: F IQ group. Has access to Screech, STAB Fury Swipes and Agility, on top of TMs like Water Pulse, Shadow Ball, Shock Wave or Thunderbolt for range, and few other TMs due to being a Normal-type. Unfortunately, while it has the ever so useful Pickup Ability, it also has Run Away. Its exclusive items make Pickup trigger more often and convert Fighting type damage ot healing.
  • Teddiursa: B IQ group. One of the town NPC species. Has STAB Fury Swipes, Charm, and Sweet Scent to make the moves more accurate. It can learn Focus Punch and Dig via TMs. Teddiursa is yet another species with full set of exclusive items; its 3-star items increases its natural HP recovery and convert Fighting-type damage to healing.
  • Wurmple: Unevolved form of Beautifly and Dustox; if you didn't unlock Oran Forest yet, this is the first time you can find it.
  • Seedot/Nuzleaf: C IQ group. Seedot gets Nature Power, Synthesis and Sunny Day; Nuzleaf gets Nature Power, Fake Out and Swagger. As per usual, they can learn Bullet Seed and Energy Ball via TMs; Nuzleaf also gets Dark Pulse. Chlorophyll and Early Bird are useful Abilities, though Nuzleaf would have to evolve from Seedot to get Sunny Day, making this a case where stalling the Evolution is very important (since Sunny Day TM does not exist). Their exclusive items raise its maximum HP by 10, increase Evasion by 2 stages during sunlight and convert Bug-type damage into healing.
  • Roselia: Evolved form of Budew from Apple Woods. It gets much more moves via level-up compared to Budew, such as GrassWhistle, Sweet Scent, Toxic, Petal Dance, and Aromatherapy.
  • Gulpin: G IQ group. It gets Yawn and Encore via level-up, as well as Sludge Bomb and Gunk Shot, STAB Poison-type projectiles. However, it does have also access to decent TMs, like Water Pulse, Shock Wave, Shadow Ball, and even Bullet Seed! Its exclusive items make Berries and Apples restore 10HP and convert Psychic-damage into healing.
  • Flygon: The final form of Trapinch and Vibrava seen in Northern Desert and Quicksand Cave. Its moveset is similar, not that you are likely to recruit it right now with its negative base recruit rate.
  • Bidoof: F IQ group. One of the Wigglytuff Guild's members' species. Like Rattata, it gets Hyper Fang and Super Fang, as well as Headbutt, Yawn, Rollout and Curse (since Speed buffs or debuffs are temporary in Mystery Dungeon, it can simply use Curse away from enemy for free Attack and Defense). It also gets similar useful TMs: Blzizard, Thunderbolt, Shock Wave, Dig, and Shadow Ball. Another species witih a set of exclusive items; its 3-star items make it immune to infatuation and convert Electric-type damage into healing.
  • Stunky/Skuntank: G IQ group. The species of Team Skull's leader. Has access to Fury Swipes, Screech, Focus Energy, SmokeScreen, Feint, and Memento, making it available for both disrupting enemies and just defeating them. Via TMs it also gets Flamethrower, Dark Pulse, Sludge Bomb (obviously), Dig and Shadow Ball (although Skuntank learns Flamethrower via level-up as well). Their exclusive items may cause attackers to cringe and convert Ground-type damage to healing.
  • Munchlax: Another species that available at the start, though this one was only for your partner.
  • Kricketot: The basic form of the Kricketune from Steam Cave. It learns only 3 moves: Growl, Bide and Bug Bite, so it's not exactly useful.

Legendary Fights

By going to Steam Cave, Quicksand Cave, Crystal Crossing and Temporal Tower, you will be able to fight the lake guardians and Dialga, with the reward for winning being their recruitment.

Mesprit fight is more or less the same as it was the first time, but you're stronger this time. Her brethren, Uxie and Azelf, work almost the same, simply having more health due to being post-game only fights, as well as having slightly different possible moves: Uxie can possibly use Endure to prevent being knocked out and Yawn to put you to sleep, while Azelf can have the Detect that works similarly to Protect and the anti-sleep Uproar. Additionally, fitting a being of knowledge, Uxie will have 330IQ points (granting it Self-Curer, Practice Swinger and Hit-and-Runner which sometimes nullifies counterattacks), whereas the other will have only 26.

Dialga's fight is almost the same as before; the big difference is that its moveset can vary now, with only the threatening Roar of Time being a guarantee. However, do note that for Temporal Tower not only you have to ask Lapras and go through Hidden Land once again to reach it, only you and your partner can come back there (and not only that, if you thought you could abuse loopholes by switching the partner to team leader, they will refuse and ask for you to be the leader for the trip, effectively making it the same as the initial trip, minus Grovyle being present).

Uxie is guaranteed to know Future Sight. The other three known moves will vary between the following: Rest, Confusion, Imprison, Endure, Swift and Yawn.

Mesprit is guaranteed to know Future Sight. The other three known moves will vary between the following: Rest, Confusion, Imprison, Protect and Lucky Chant.

Azelf is guaranteed to know Future Sight. The three other known moves will vary between the following: Rest, Confusion, Imprison, Detect and Uproar.

Dialga is guaranteed to know Roar of Time. The three other known moves will vary between the following: DragonBreath, Scary Face, AncientPower, Metal Claw, and Dragon Claw

Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf are pretty similar, being all in IQ Group G and having similar movesets:

  • Uxie will learn Amnesia, Flail and Memento via level-up, while also being compatible with Giga Drain and SolarBeam. Only Memento is really notable here, and it is learned all the way at Level 76.
  • Mesprit will learn Charm, Copycat and Healing Wish, with it having access to Ice Beam and Blizzard via TMs. Easily the best set of exclusive moves.
  • Azelf will learn Nasty Plot, Last Resort and Explosion, with access to Flamethrower and Fire Blast via TMs. Better than Uxie, but not by much.

Legendaries' exclusive items are different, in that most have only one and they have to be found in locked places in dungeons, rather than inside boxes or swapped at Croagunk's. Their exclusive items all work the same, making them randomly warp away when attacked at critical health, and can be found in a locked chamber at Zero Isle East 15F, though which one you'll find will be random each time.

Dialga is in IQ Group I, which is shared by only one other species that you will not be able to recruit until a while later. This group is a mix of offensive and defensive IQ skills, giving it access to PP Saver, Self-Curer, Power Pitcher, Survivalist, Deep Breather, Practice Swinger, Aggressor, Sharpshooter, Quick Healer, All-Terrain Hiker, Extra Striker, Quick Dodger, Intimidator, and the new Time Tripper (passively boosts Movement Speed by 1). By levelling Dialga it gets access to Heal Block, Earth Power and Aura Sphere, though the last one is learned all the way at level 90. Being a boxart legendary, it has access to all kinds of TM moves, so it has no problems getting more moves with range: Blizzard, Thunderbolt, Shock Wave, and Flamethrower are all things it can learn. Dialga's exclusive item is found at Zero Isle South 15F and it halves physical damage Dialga takes, making it pretty useful. Do keep in mind that Dialga is body size of 4, severely limiting your team building (you can't have more than 6 across your entire team, so effectively 2 more team members at best).

Evolution

With the access to Luminous Spring, team members other than you and your partner are capable of Evolution. Do think over whether you actually want to evolve someone, as Evolution doesn't do much stat-wise in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. Instead, ask yourself some questions, such as:

  • Do I like the evolved form more than basic one?
  • Does one of its Abilities change for a better one (for example Snubbull's Run Away becomes Quick Feet as Granbull)
  • Does the Evolution have useful moves that the previous stage doesn't have? Obvious answer is that certain species like Weedle or Beldum learn next to no moves without evolving, but there's also for example Froslass learning the room-wide, stat-raising Ominous Wind. If the opposite happens, i.e. only a pre-Evolution learns a useful move via level, stalling the Evolution is useful, as it will be remembered by Electivire's relearner service, despite the Evolution no longer learning it.
  • The mobility of Evolution might be different, too; for example, Venomoth can hover unlike Venonat, while Metagross cannot unlike its pre-Evolutions.
  • Are there are useful moves that it learns and an Evolution would let it get the 1.5x STAB multiplier on it (such as Seel's Ice-type moves).

If you're aiming to obtain every single Pokémon, only a small bunch of species have to be evolved; most can be found and recruited directly in a dungeon, either available now or in future.

Do keep in mind that certain Evolution methods work differently in this game:

  • All trade Evolutions now require the Link Cable item to be given.
  • Friendship-based Evolutions are instead based on IQ, requiring either 100 (almost 1.5☆) or 200 (almost 2.5☆) to evolve.
  • Time-based Evolutions now require either the Sun Ribbon or Lunar Ribbon. These cannot be found in any Kecleon Shop, and are instead randomly awarded for jobs ranked high enough.
  • Feebas, Leafeon, Glaceon, Magnezone and Nosepass now require Beauty Scarf, Mossy Rock, Frozen Rock and Coronet Rock, respectively. Beauty Scarf is exclusive to the random job rewards, as well.
  • Shedinja will quietly appear in Chimecho Assembly after evolving Nincada.
  • Mantyke simply requires Remoraid to be in Chimecho Assembly.

The Luminous Spring will also ask for a second item if needed (such as Metal Coat for evolving Scyther into Scizor).

As a final note, if you are playing the North American or Australian version of the gąme, keep in mind that this place features a glitch that causes the game to softlock seemingly at random during Evolution. Specifically, if the Pokémon's name or nickname is exactly 10 characters, although there are ways to avoid this glitch (for example, you and your partner will never trigger this glitch, nor your last recruit; for specifics, see the glitch page).

New Adventures

Marowak Dojo's Final Challenge

When you enter Marowak Dojo, you will notice that there's a hole in its wall. Marowak warns you that it leads to a dungeon.

Before entering the portal inside the wall, remember to store items inside Kangaskhan's Storage, as this dungeon removes all items in your inventory! Also be careful, as you cannot be rescued here, but you will lose items and money upon defeat like with typical dungeons.

Final Maze is 48 floors long with no rest stops, making it much longer than any of the dungeons faced up to this point in the game, so you have to rely on the food items found within the dungeon. Curiously, no traps or Monster Houses appear in this dungeon, despite being exclusive to postgame, so you don't have to worry about these for now.

Unlike the other mazes, you are capable of recruiting here; in fact, everything you can find here is what you could find in the regular mazes, so it is a way to technically recruit the maze inhabitants, and a pretty high level too! Just keep in mind that only up to 14 of these 20 species will appear at once.

The other notable thing is that Final Maze contains every single TM in the game (including otherwise rarely seen Dream Eater), so you can try your luck if you need one for a team member. This dungeon will also contain the elusive Hidden Machines (though unlike Time and Darkness, this is no longer the only way to obtain them), although most Hidden Machine moves are not really useful in this game; Cut attacks everything adjacent to the user, so it could be used for crowd control. Out of the available Pokémon so far, the following can learn Cut:

  • Bulbasaur family, Charmander, Beedrill, Rattata family, Sandshrew family, Nidoran family, Oddish family, Meowth, Bellsprout family, Tentacool family, Farfetch'd, Krabby family, Rhydon and Rhyperior, Tangela family, Scyther family, Pinsir, Dragonite, Chikorita family, Aipom family, Teddiursa family, Zigzagoon family, Shiftry, Breloom, Nincada family, Aron family, Roselia family, Cacnea family, Anorith family, Absol, Bagon family, Metang and Metagross, Turtwig family, Bidoof family, Kricketune, Rampardos, Vespiquen, Pachirisu, Buneary family, Glameow family, Stunky family, Gible family, Skorupi family, Carnivine, Gallade, and Dialga.

Floors 23, 29 and 40 look different from the rest of the dungeon, but there's absolutely nothing special to find there anymore, and is simply a leftover from Time/Darkness. Floor 40 however is notable for the earliest you can find magma in this game; a tile that Fire-types, Rhydon, Rhyperior and Groudon can walk on. If a Pokémon of other type gets there, either via natural movement, an item, IQ skill, or being thrown/pushed away, it will get burned.

Successfully clearing this dungeon causes Marowak to give you the Brown Bow, which is the same as the aura bow you received at the beginning of the game (and in fact, you might have a Brown Bow yourself).

Bristle, but now at a level high enough to possibly have threatening moves: Doduo can have Agility or Acupressure to boost itself and its allies, while Spinarak can have Fury Swipes, STAB Pin Missile, or Agility as well. Machop doesn't really have anything of note aside from Scary Face to slow down enemies due to difference in No Guard effects making moves like Cross Chop or DynamicPunch less useful.
  • Magnemite: A IQ group. The species seen taking care of the outlaws. It learns Metal Sound, Supersonic, Thunder Wave, Lock-on, Screech and the ever-so useful Discharge via level-up; all available immediately because of its high level. Its exclusive items make it immune to paralysis, increases Evasion by 2 stage during the Cloudy weather (which is unfortunately pretty rare) and converts Ground-type damage into healing.
  • Omanyte: Seen in Brine Cave, but now at a level high enough to immediately be capable of Evolution, which is relevant as there's no dungeon in the game in which Omastar can be recruited directly.
  • Kabuto: E IQ group. The other part of Brine Cave's boss fight, it gets Mud Shot, Sand Attack, Endure, Metal Sound and AncientPower via level-up. Can learn Water Pulse, Blizzard and Dig via TMs, and is compatible with Cut HM. Its Abilities are basically the same as Omanyte's, though once again it cannot benefit from Swift Swim on its own. Its exclusive items make it immune to confusion and convert Grass-type damage to healing.
  • Mareep: Seen in Amp Plains, now at a level high enough to possibly use Discharge against you.
  • Misdreavus: G IQ group. You've seen it in future dungeons, but now it can be recruited. It naturally learns Shadow Ball, Psybeam and Confuse Ray, and can be taught Thunderbolt or Shock Wave via TM. Be careful of Perish Song at later floors; it might have terrible accuracy, but it needs to land once, and you might not have the means to cure the status! Its exclusive items might cause it to inflict Perish Song on attackers and convert Ghost-type damage into healing.
  • Swinub: A IQ group. Learns Endure, Mud-Slap, Mud Bomb, Powder Snow, Icy Wind, Ice Shard and Blizzard via level-up, all useful moves; Powder Snow is a weaker but more accurate version of Blizzard with more PP. It can also learn Dig via TM. Its exclusive items make it earn 1.1x the usual EXP, may cause attackers to be come frozen, and convert Steel-type damage to healing.
  • Houndour: The basic form of Houndoom from Treeshroud Forest.
  • Phanpy: Another place to recruit this starting species.
  • Magby: Seen in Steam Cave. Later into the dungeon is high enough level to know Sunny Day; useful if your team composition needs the weather.
  • Poochyena: D IQ group. Doesn't have too many interesting moves via level with Bite, Swagger, Scary Face and Sucker Punch, but can learn Dig, Shadow Ball and of course Dark Pulse via TMs. One of its Abilities is Run Away, but thankfully that becomes the much more useful Intimidate as Mightyena. Its exclusive item increases its Movement Speed in Cloudy weather (which once again is pretty rare) and converts Fighting-type damage into healing.
  • Shroomish: Last seen at Mt. Horn. Do keep in mind that at later floors it will be high level enough for Spore, a very useful move that its Evolution does not learn!
  • Mawile/Skorupi: Last seen in Quicksand Cave. Be wary of Skorupi, as now it can possibly have Bug Bite, eating what few food items you have in this dungeon.
  • Meditite: C IQ group. Has Mind Reader to ignore accuracy checks, Confusion and Force Palm for STAB status infliction, Detect, Calm Mind, and eventually Recover. It can also learn Focus Punch, Shadow Ball, Focus Blast and Drain Punch via TMs. Do keep in mind that Pure Power only activates 1/3 of the time and only boosts by a 50%. Its exclusive items increase Evasion by 2 stages when there is no weather and converts Ghost-type damage into healing.
  • Bagon: Last seen in Crystal Crossing. Towards the end of the dungeon its level is high enough that it can immediately evolve into Salamence. Similarly to Omastar, there is no dungeon in which you can recruit Salamence, so recruiting Bagon here and evolving it is the quickest way. Do keep in mind that Salamence has body size of 2 unlike Bagon and Shelgon. Also upon Evolution from Shelgon to Salamence, it gains access to Fire Fang, Thunder Fang, and Fly via level; one of only two to learn it naturally!
  • Staravia: If you didn't unlock the optional Tiny Meadow yet, this is the other place to recruit Staravia directly. It is at high level enough to possibly know Agility now.
  • Carnivine: Last seen in Northern Desert.

Escort Missions

The following two dungeons are unlocked by accepting an escort mission with them as destination. Actually completing them is optional; you can just accept the mission and then throw it away.

Shimmer Hill

A dungeon filled mostly with Normal-types. On the fifteenth floor, there's a locked chamber requiring a key to unlock. Inside, there's a Deluxe Box with Yellow Silk, a type of exclusive item. Unlike exclusive items so far, Silks affect an entire type, this one boosting Sp. Atk and Sp. Def of Electric-types. At the end of a dungeon is a Deluxe Box that can contain either one of the four Gummis, or the rare Sitrus Berry. There's also a guaranteed Reviver Seed somewhere on 15th floor.

The Kecleon Shops in this dungeon will offer other Evolutionary items than in Mystifying Forest; which set is available depends on the dungeon, although as mentioned above in the Evolution section, certain items cannot be found in the shops. Additionally, this and the other following dungeons with Monster Houses notably have only Gummis and money inside the Monster Houses.

There is one special encounter here that will only spawn if you have either Secret Slab or Mystery Party in your Treasure Bag. Those can only be found as a target of the randomly generated jobs, but only once you reach Diamond Rank (which depending on how much you did random missions up to this point might be close to or already have achieved, as it is the rank after Gold).

This will cause Deoxys will show up at the start of floor 17 and only then. However, given its negative base recruitment rate, at your current level it would likely require boosting odds further with a held item; it will be easier to recruit it later in the game. You need just one of the items, not both.

  • Primeape: C IQ group. Learns Fury Swipes, Karate Chop, Focus Energy, and Screech. Via TMs learn Focus Punch, Focus Blast, Dig, and surprisingly Thunderbolt and Overheat. Vital Spirit makes it immune to sleep status conditions, which is as always useful, though Anger Point's effect is less useful when items like Violent Seed exist. Its exclusive items may cause attackers to cringe and convert Psychic-type damage to healing.
  • Arcanine: C IQ group. Unfortunately, most Stone Evolutions have very poor level-up moveset and Arcanine is no different, having only Fire Fang, Thunder Fang, Bite, Roar, Odor Sleuth and ExtremeSpeed. While it can be patched up with TMs like Flamethrower or Dig, if you want to use Arcanine, you're better off waiting until the basic form becomes available and evolving it, as it learns much more useful moves, especially given its negative base recruitment rate. That being said, Intimidate and Flash Fire is a very useful Ability combination, giving it a type immunity and reduced damage from adjacent physical attacks. Its exclusive items make it receive 1.1x EXP and convert Water-type damage into healing.
  • Rhyhorn: Last seen in Northern Desert; not quite at levels it evolves into Rhydon. Like before, it can have Fury Attack, STAB Rock Blast, or Scary Face, so be wary.
  • Tauros: Last seen in Far Amp Plains.
  • Sentret: D IQ group. Learns STAB Fury Swipes and Helping Hand. Learns a wide variety of TMs, such as Focus Punch, Water Pulse, Thunderbolt, Brick Break, Dig, Shadow Ball, Shock Wave, and Flamethrower. Can also learn Cut HM. Unfortunately one of its Abilities is Run Away. Its exclusive items boost its Movement Speed in Cloudy weather and convert Fighting-type damage into healing.
  • Mareep: Was already seen in Amp Plains and Final Maze.
  • Espeon: One of the Eeveelutions. Level-up wise, swaps Growl, Bite, Baton Pass, Take Down, and Trump Card for Confusion, Swift, STAB projectile Psybeam, Future Sight and Psych Up, eventually also learning Psychic, the team healing Morning Sun and Power Swap. Unlike most Eeveelutions, it is compatible with Cut HM. As mentioned before, Eevee's family exclusive items only affect that specific stage; Espeon's exclusive item may cause attackers to be confused.
  • Girafarig: F IQ group. Has access to Agility, Psybeam, Double Hit via level, as well as Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball, Shock Wave, and Energy Ball via TMs. Its Abilities make it immune to cringing and cause it to wake up from sleep faster, both useful effects. Its exclusive items can cause attackers to be confused.
  • Ursaring: Evolution of Teddiursa from Mystifying Forest. Mostly the same moves, but learns Scary Face instead of Charm, and can be taught Focus Blast via TM.
  • Houndour: Another place to find this species.
  • Stantler: Last seen in Foggy Forest.
  • Miltank: H IQ group. It has Stomp and Rollout via level-up as well as many various TMs: Focus Punch, Water Pulse, Blizzard, Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball, Shock Wave, or Focus Blast. It can also work in a cleric role, due to learning both Milk Drink (restores 25% health of everyone in your team) and Heal Bell (cures bad status conditions of allies in the room; useful for more harmful status like poison or Perish Song). Scrappy means that it can hit Ghost-types more effectively with its STAB. Its exclusive item increases the natural HP recovery speed.
  • Linoone: Evolution of Zigzagoon seen all the way back in Foggy Forest. Most notable change in moveset is that it learns Fury Swipes instead of Pin Missile; while STAB multihit moves are always pretty strong, Pin Missile is ranged.
  • Camerupt: Evolution of Numel from Steam Cave, though once again it is an Evolution with base recruit rate pretty below zero.
  • Castform: G IQ group. Castform is... somewhat special in Mystery Dungeon. Its gimmick is weather, so it learns Rain Dance, Sunny Day and Hail at Lv. 20, Ember, Water Gun and Powder Snow at Lv. 10 and Weather Ball at Lv. 30, a move that used to be its signature and is only learned by one other species in this game. Weather Ball is pretty good, being a projectile move that changes type with the current weather (except Cloudy and Fog). Since Castform also changes with it, except in Sandstorm (which it can't learn in this game anyway), it not only benefits from STAB most of the time, but also whatever the weather bonuses are (such as extra power multiplier in the sun or the rain). In fact, the devs seems to think it was too strong for its good, as unlike Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, Castform's size is 4 stars, causing it to restrict your team building options like Dialga. It also obviously learns a variety of other moves via TMs like Water Pulse, Thunderbolt, Blizzard (this move never misses in hail!), Shadow Ball, Flamethrower, Shock Wave, Energy Ball... Its gimmick is actually somewhat notable here unlike in the mainline games. It even has a whole set of exclusive items, with its 2-star item causing it to take only 1 damage from explosions and the 3-star item making it immune to status when there's no weather.
  • Skuntank: Another place to find it.
  • Deoxys: Deoxys is... a unique Pokémon, to put it simply. It has four Formes, each with somewhat different level-up moveset. The problem is that you cannot manually change Deoxys's form, it happens automatically whenever you enter a new floor. Since stat growth in Mystery Dungeon works differently, Deoxys instead receives passive stat stages: Attack gets +2 to its attacking stats and -2 to defensive stats, reverse for Defense, while Speed has all stats lowered but has a permanent increase in Movement Speed. Not only that, but Electivire will refuse to work with it, meaning that if you want to recall moves, you basically need to use Doom Seeds to lower its level and then regain them. Some of moves of note include Pursuit (Lv. 33 for Normal, Attack and Speed), Snatch (49 for Normal and Defense), Agility (73 for Speed), Recover (81) and Counter/Mirror Coat (97 for Defense). Note that since Deoxys cannot re-learn moves normally and only one move can be learned at once, getting both Counter and Mirror Coat involves using Doom Seed exploit, as noted above. Thankfully its TM compatibility does not care for its Forme: it can learn Focus Punch, Water Pulse, Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball, Shock Wave, Focus Blast and Energy Ball (no Blizzard unfortunately). Its exclusive item is at 22th floor of Zero Isle North, but it's not worth the trouble, since it just makes enemies use PP faster.

Midnight Forest

Similar deal, but the dominant type is Bug, and longer. The locked chamber at 15F will instead have the Fire-type Red Silk. The dungeon's appearance might feel familiar, as it was also used for Dusk Forest, one of the future dungeons.

Notably, there are no (natural) Monster Houses here.

  • Beedrill: Last seen in Apple Woods, now much higher level. It might have STAB Pin Missile or Agility, so be careful!
  • Raticate/Venonat/Bellsprout/Scyther/Wurmple/Nuzleaf/Roselia: We've seen these in Mystifying Forest.
  • Venomoth: Last seen most likely in Mt. Horn, but now you should be able to recruit it. Be careful, as its list of possible moves now includes Stun Spore, Sleep Powder, Psybeam and Signal Beam (though it does make Silver Wind less likely).
  • Ledyba/Ledian: F IQ group. Both learn Supersonic, Agility, Silver Wind and Bug Buzz via level-up (in fact Ledian is high enough of level to have all but the last one in possible moves!). They also learn Focus Punch and Dig via TM, with Ledian also being compatible with Focus Blast! Early Bird is as always a useful ability. Their exclusive items increase Movement Speed when there's no weather and convert Rock-type damage into healing.
  • Nincada: Last seen in Quicksand Cave.
  • Beautifly: Last seen most likely in Mt. Horn as well, now high enough level to possibly have Stun Spore and Morning Sun; thankfully just barely not high enough level for Silver Wind.
  • Rotom: G IQ group. Learns Astonish, Confuse Ray, Shock Wave, Ominous Wind and Discharge via level, as well as Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball and Dark Pulse via TMs. Although Explorers of Sky brought in various changes from Pokémon Platinum, its alternate forms do not exist in this game, and as such cannot use their moves. Despite being just a regular Pokémon, its exclusive item is found in a locked chamber... in a dungeon that you won't have access for quite a while (it gives chance for attackers to be inflicted with paralysis). However, it is another case of low recruit rate.

Lake Afar

Unlocked by recycling 100 items in Spinda's Café. It is an aquatic dungeon and as such is inhabitated solely by Water-types, with Water-type Blue Silk on 15th floor.

Notably, all Pokémon found here cannot be recruited in any other dungeon in the game, though some of them are Evolutions of those found somewhere else.

The Kecleon Shop in this dungeon has a better variety, more akin to what early postgame dungeons would have in Time/Darkness.

  • Squirtle/Wartortle/Blastoise/Totodile/Croconaw/Feraligatr/Mudkip/Marshtomp/Swampert: The Water-type starters are here, except for the Piplup line, and can't be found anywhere else.
    • Blastoise gets Flash Cannon as Lv. 1 move and can be taught Focus Blast via TM.
    • Feraligatr can be taught Focus Blast via TM as well. Although its base recruit rate is already pretty low, an oversight causes female Feraligatr to start at even lower -33.9%, unless you answered Yes to "Did you play "Explorers of Time" or "Explorers of Darkness"?" during the quiz at the beginning of the game and you haven't recruited Feraligatr yet.
    • Marshtomp and Swampert learn somewhat different moves via level-up from Mudkip: swapping Mud Sport, Whirlpool and Hydro Pump for Mud Bomb, Muddy Water and Earthquake, while also learning Mud Shot.. Swampert is also compatible with Focus Punch and Focus Blast TMs.
  • Poliwhirl/Poliwrath/Politoed: Evolutions of Poliwag most likely last seen all the way in Waterfall Cave (as they also show up in the optional Serenity River). Poliwrath and Politoed have very limited level-up moveset; Poliwrath gets DynamicPunch and Mind Reader while Politeod gets Swagger, Bounce and the dreaded by the players Perish Song. They are compatible with Focus Punch TM now, while Poliwrath and Politoed are also compatible with Focus Blast.
  • Goldeen/Seaking: A IQ group. Learn Supersonic, Water Pulse, Fury Attack, Horn Drill and Agility via level-up (and also the Waterfall HM via level) on top of the typical Blizzard TM. Seaking also has Poison Jab as Lv. 1 move, though Goldeen can learn it via TM too. Their exclusive items boost their Movement Speed in rain (on top of the Swift Swim boost) and convert Electric-type damage into healing.
  • Magikarp: C IQ group. It's Magikarp, it doesn't even get enough moves to fill all slots. Its exclusive items sometimes cause it to not use PP after attacking and convert Electric-type damage into healing.
  • Quagsire: Evolution of Wooper most likely seen last at Waterfall Cave. It works mostly the same, but it can now learn Focus Punch and Focus Blast via TMs.
  • Lombre/Ludicolo: Yet another Evolution of a Pokémon likely last seen in Waterfall Cave. Lombre's level-up moveset is somewhat different from Lotad, such as swapping out Natural Gift for Fury Swipes, Rain Dance for Puproar or Energy Ball for Hydro Pump. Given that both of its Abilities activate in rain, if you want to use them, it might be better to evolve a Lotad that has learned Rain Dance. Ludicolo being a stone Evolution has very limited level-up movepool; though it can now learn Focus Punch and Focus Blast via TMs.
  • Corphish: B IQ group. Another member of Wigglytuff's Guild; learns Bubble, BubbleBeam, Protect and Swords Dance via level-up, with Water Pulse, Blizzard, Dig, Sludge Bomb and X-Scissor via TMs. Also has access to Cut. Shell Armor preventing crits is useful, and Hyper Cutter prevents it from losing its Attack in case of walking into a trap or moves like Charm. Its exclusive items may cause attackers to cringe and convert Bug-type damage to healing.
  • Feebas/Milotic: H IQ group. Although Feebas's level-up moveset is basically a copy of Magikarp, it actually can use TMs, so it can use Water Pulse and Blizzard. Milotic learns Water Pulse, Rain DAnce, Recover and Hydro Pump via level-up, if you can get your hands on it right now (likely by getting the evo item from a mission ranked high enough). Unfortunately, Milotic trades in Swift Swim for Marvel Scale, making Rain Dance somewhat less useful at that point. Their exclusive items make enemies drop more money and convert Electric-type damage into.
  • Slowpoke: B IQ group. Gets Curse, Yawn, Confusion, Disable, Water Pulse, Slack Off and eventually Rain Dance via level-up. Via TMs it also learns Blizzard, Dig, Shadow Ball and Flamethrower (as one of the few Water types with access to Fire moves). While Oblivious prevents infatuation, it's not as strong as it was in Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team (plus only specific Pokémon learn Attract via level-up, which is what every enemy in this game goes off). Immunity to confusion is much more useful, however, even if there are ways around its effect. Its exclusive items have the rare effect of sometimes decreasing attackers' Movement Speed, reducing damage from special moves by half and converting Dark-type damage into healing.
  • Vaporeon: The Water-type Eeveelution with Water Absorb, making it straight up immune to Water moves, instead being healed by them. Level-up wise, swaps Growl, Baton Pass, Take Down, and Trump Card for Water Gun, Aurora Beam, Aqua Ring, and Haze, respectively, eventually also learning Acid Armor, Hydro Pump and Muddy Water. Being a Water-type also grants it access to Water Pulse and Blizzard TMs. Its exclusive item may cause attackers to cringe.

Happy Outlook

Unlocked at random by finding its location at the bottom of a drink in Spinda's Café. It has many Grass- and Normal-types.

Like the other dungeons, it contains a room with Deluxe Box at the end of it; there's no locked chamber to be found here, however. Curve Bands can be found here; an item that makes thrown items bounce off the walls.

  • Metapod/Seedot/Gulpin: Another place to find these Mystifying Forest species.
  • Oddish/Budew: Last seen in Apple Woods (and Oran Forest).
  • Meowth/Persian: One of the partner choices. Persian learns Power Gem instead of Pay Day.
  • Chikorita/Turtwig: The other place to find those Grass starters.
  • Togepi/Togetic: H IQ group. Has Charm, Yawn, Encore, Sweet Kiss, Wish, and AncientPower via level-up, then Water Pulse, Shadow Ball, Shock Wave, and Flamethrower, all while having Serene Grace to make the attacks' secondary effects more likely (there's also STAB Secret Power if you are willing to sacrifice range). Togetic learns Magical Leaf via level-up and Focus Punch + Silver Wind via TM on top of all that, as if Silver Wind wasn't good enough by itself. Another species with a whole set of exclusive items; their 3-star items increase max HP by 10, sometimes cause PP to not be used after using a move and convert Electric-type damage into healing.
  • Sunkern/Sunflora: B IQ group. Another member of the Guild. Sunkern's moveset is mostly Grass moves, with a decent focus on healing, having Leech Seed, all the three Grass draining moves, Synthesis and Ingrain, while also learning Sunny Day, Razor Leaf, Growth and GrassWhistle. Via TMs it also can learn Bullet Seed, Energy Ball and Sludge Bomb. Sunflora, unlike typical stone Evolutions, has an actual level-up moveset: swapping Endeavor, Synthesis, Giga Drain and Seed Bomb for level-up Bullet Seed, Petal Dance, level-up Solar Beam and Leaf Storm. Really, this thing is setup for sunlight like crazy, and it can learn Sunny Day to actually abuse it, with Chlorophyll AND Solar Power (the latter doesn't prevent natural HP recovery in this game, so it's only a problem at lower levels). Its exclusive items go further with this, increasing its Evasion during sunlight and converting Fire-type damage into healing (in fact, if you cleared Special Episode 3, you already should have Sunflora's 3-star item).
  • Skitty: You can find this starter choice here. Skitty, as mentioned before, is really good in this game, though if you didn't pick it back at the beginning, getting it up to speed power-wise will take a while.
  • Exeggutor: Last seen in Apple Woods.
  • Cacturne: Last seen in Northern Desert; it doesn't get to benefit from the sandstorm this time.
  • Happiny/Chansey/Blissey: H IQ group. Happiny's level-up moveset is somewhat limited, learning just Pound, Charm, Copycat, Refresh, and Sweet Kiss. However, Charm, Copycat and Sweet Kiss aren't learned by its Evolutions (though since it's a time-based Evolution that also needs Oval Stone, that means you need to hope you get them both). It learns Water Pulse, Shadow Ball, Flamethrower, Shock Wave (and Secret Power to abuse Serene Grace, like Togepi). Chansey and Blissey, as expected, can fulfill more of a cleric support role, learning Softboiled (25% room-wide heal), STAB DoubleSlap, Sing, and Healing Wish. Via TMs they learn on top of Happiny stuff: Focus Punch, Blizzard and Thunderbolt. Blissey also learns Focus Blast on top all that. Natural Cure helps themselves recover from status conditions, and Serene Grace is there for the more offensive builds. Their exclusive items give them 5EXP when taking a hit, can sometimes restore PP when taking damage of any kind and convert Fighting-type damage into healing, strengthening the cleric synergy.
  • Mime Jr.: F IQ group. The Secret Bazaar NPC and pre-Evolution of one of the town NPCs. Learns Confusion, DoubleSlap, Psybeam, Substitute (which turns the target into a decoy, making AI target it preferentially), and one of the few species that learns Recycle via level-up (while almost everyone can learn Substitute via TM, it's obviously easier to just get it via level). Via TMs it can also learn Focus Punch, Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball and Shock Wave. Soundproof makes it immune to sound-based moves, such as the threatening GrassWhistle, Screech, Perish Song, Sing or Supersonic, while Filter makes any possible supereffective attacks slightly weaker. Another species with a full set of exclusive items; its 3-exclusive items make it get 5 EXP when hit and convert Dark-type damage into healing.

Mt. Mistral

Unlocked at random by finding its location at the bottom of a drink in Spinda's Café. It has mostly Flying-types.

Grass-type Grass Silk can be found in a locked chamber at 15th floor. Additionally, randomly on the ground, you can find an item to boost recruitment chances by flat 5%, Friend Bow (with the only other one available right now being the Amber Tear at the end of Zero Isle West, if you are willing to prepare for its restrictions and 40 floors), as well as the elusive move-boosting Ginseng (though it's very unlikely to show up).

Additionally, like with Shimmer Hill and Deoxys, Ho-Oh will spawn on floor 19 if you have a Secret Slab or Mystery Part in your bag. Unlike Deoxys, however, Ho-Oh's recruit rate starts decently high, so you can actually recruit it as soon as you get one of those items. Just remember that you have to approach it like a regular recruit unlike the lake guardians or Dialga (leader has to knock it out and they have to be adjacent).

  • Pidgeot: D IQ group. Has STAB Quick Attack, plus also Feather Dance, Agility, Roost, and Mirror Move. Mirror Move is pretty strong, since it deflects attacks back, but only works if the attacker is adjacent to you. Its exclusive items make it immune to thrown items, increase Evasion when there's no weather and convert Rock-type damage into healing.
  • Fearow: Evolved form of Spearow from Mystifying Forest. Works the asme, but Fearow has Pluck as Lv. 1 move, so watch out for enemy Fearow!
  • Venomoth: Yet another place to find Venomoth in this game.
  • Aerodactyl: Last seen at Mt. Horn; now high level enough to possibly have AncientPower and Crunch as well.
  • Jumpluff: Final form of Hoppip and Skiploom found in main story dungeons. Work similarly to them, just keep in mind that the level is now high enough for it to be able to use Sleep Powder, Cotton Spore or the dreaded Bullet Seed.
  • Swellow: D IQ group. Gets Focus Energy, Quick Attack, Double Team, Aerial Ace and Agility via level-up. Has Lv. 1 Pluck, though, so watch out.
  • Flygon: Another place to find it; with Friend Bow boost, it will be recruitable now.
  • Staraptor: The final form of Starly and Staravia found earlier; can learn Close Combat via level-up unlike Staravia.
  • Mothim: The male Evolution of Burmy. Interestingly enough it learns some Psychic-type moves via level, such as Confusion or Psybeam, while also learning Silver Wind and eventually Bug Buzz. On enemy side, you also want to watch out for Poison Powder and Bug Bite (like with Burmy). Interestingly enough it can learn Shadow Ball and Energy Ball via TM.
  • Drifblim: G IQ group. Game rebalancing gone horribly right is how Drifblim can be described. While Aftermath exists solely to annoy you when you defeat the wild ones, Unburden is what turns this thing into a monster. Swift Swim and Chlorophyll trigger under a specific weather condition, which depending on your team composition you might have to stock Wonder Orbs for. Unburden simply requires you to not be using a held item, in a game where you can use consumables from your inventory. Remember, you do not consume any extra PP, that second attack is free! And it works for status moves, too. At this level it has access to most of its level-up moves, only really missing Shadow Ball. It can make itself harder to hit with Minimize, it could have Focus Energy for crits, it can use STAB Gust and Astonish, or god forbid, Ominous Wind. It can learn Thunderbolt, Silver Wind, and Cut via TM/HM. But honestly, when you get to attack twice for basically free, you don't need anything too flashy. And of course it also has a full set of exclusive items, with its 3-star items making it immune to thrown items and convert Ghost-type damage into healing; though really, it doesn't need it if properly set up.
  • Mismagius: Evolution of Misdreavus from Final Maze. Unfortunately like most stone Evolutions, its level-up moveset is limited. It does at least learn Energy Ball via TM unlike Misdreavus, but you're still better off evolving Misdreavus to get its moves if you want to use Mismagius.
  • Gliscor: C IQ group. Has all the elemental fangs and Poison Jab, Sand-Attack, Fury Cutter, Faint Attack, Screech, Swords Dance, U-turn and X-Scissor... Somehow no STAB moves via level-up, but that can be fixed with TMs; it learns Dig, and Aerial Ace, plus Sludge Bomb, Dark Pulse, and Cut. Its exclusive items increases its Movement Speed in sandstorm (synergizing with its Sand Veil Ability, unfortunately it can't learn Sandstorm itself) and convert Ice-type damage into healing.
  • Ho-Oh: Has access to Recover, Sunny Day and after levelling enough, Ancient Power, Calm Mind, Sky Attack and Sacred Fire. Sky Attack and Sacred Fire only hit in front (and the former needs to charge-up), but they do at least compensate with high power, so it could be useful for bosses. Range-wise it has access to Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball, Shock Wave and obviously Flamethrower via TMs. Unfortunately it does not get Weather Ball until a later game in the series, which is a shame as it would synergize well with Sunny Day. Its exclusive item is found at 25th floor of Zero Isle South, letting Ho-Oh reflect status conditions back at the attacker. Like Dialga and Castform, it has body size of 4.

Lost Wilderness

Once again, unlocked at random by finding its location at the bottom of a drink in Spinda's Café. Features a bunch of Psychic- and Fighting-types.

Doesn't have a Silk item, but interestingly enough, Hidden Stair items and the main Kecleon Shop sells only 3 items: Apple, Gray Gummi (Rock) and Silver Gummi (Steel). Good for stocking up on these Gummi types, as well as because all food items stop normally appearing after 9th floor.

Notably, in this dungeon adds a new trap every floor up to fifth, slightly diluting odds of the other ones.

  • Abra/Kadabra: The only place to find Abra. It only learns Teleport by level-up, but it has the same TM compatibility as Kadabra. Plus, it floats, unlike its Evolutions.
  • Lickitung: G IQ group. Has Lick, Supersonic, Stomp and Disable, and is Lv. 33 is right when it learns Rollout, which is not only a multihit move, but also needed for the Evolution. It even gets Refresh and Screech at higher levels. Its TM compatibility is also pretty good: Focus Punch, Blizzard, Flamethrower, Dig, Shock Wave and Thunderbolt (and also HM Cut). Immunity to confusion is useful as always.
  • Mr. Mime: Evolved form of Mime Jr. from Happy Outlook. Loses Tickle in exchange for Magical Leaf, Power Swap and Guard Swap.
  • Tyrogue: C IQ group. Via level-up it learns only Tackle, Fake Out, Helping Hand and Foresight. It does have access to some other moves via TMs, such as Brick Break, but it does suffer from being meant to evolve. Note that Hitmonlee cannot be recruited in a dungeon, so you have to recruit a second one. Thankfully, at Lv. 20, Tyrogue's Attack and Defense will naturally be equal, so you just need to get lucky with a Gummi (or level it further to make the Attack be higher than Defense for Hitmonlee). Its exclusive items work like Eevee's; Tyrogue's 2-star item gives it Long Toss status (making thrown items go much farther) and makes it receive 5EXP on hit.
    • Hitmontop: Has Focus Energy, Pursuit and Counter, the signature Triple Kick, and at higher levels Feint, Agility and Detect. It can also learn Dig via TM, among few other things. Intimidate is useful, since most of its moves require it to get close. Technician does affect some of its moves, most notably Quick Attack. Hitmontop's exclusive items make it ignore Reflect and Light Screen; not very useful.
    • Hitmonlee: Learns a lot of kicking moves, including Double Kick. It also learns Focus Energy, Feint, Foresight, Endure and Mind Reader. Endure could also potentially synergize with Reversal, which it also learns. Obviously also learns Focus Punch, Brick Break and Focus Blast via TMs. Its exclusive items counters adjacent physical attacks at full efficiency. Immunity to paralysis from Limber is useful as always; Reckless makes Jump Kick and Hi Jump Kick stronger.
  • Shiftry: Final Evolution of Seedot and Nuzleaf from Mystifying Forest. Like most other stone Evolutions, its level-up moveset is very limited, though at least bunch of the moves it has are something that Nuzleaf doesn't get: Whirlwind, Nasty Plot, and Leaf Storm at higher levels. It's also compatible with Focus Blast and Silver Wind TMs.
  • Makuhita/Hariyama: E IQ group. Most of their level-up movesets is Fighting-type moves, but given its signature move Arm Thrust is a multihit Fighting-type move, it doesn't care. It also has access to Force Palm, and like Hitmonlee, it learns both Endure and Reversal via level-up. It also has access to Focus Energy, Belly Drum, Fake Out and Sand-Attack. Gets Focus Punch, Focus Blast, Brick Break and Dig via TMs. Hariyama also gets Brine via level-up. Their exclusive items cause adjacent physical moves to be countered at full efficiency and convert Psychic-type damage into heaing.
  • Meditite/Medicham: Meditite is available here as well, with its evolution. Medicham gets the elemental punches via level-up and Energy Ball via TM.
  • Spinda: G IQ group. Another town NPC. Learns Psybeam, Hypnosis, Dizzy Punch, Sucker Punch and its signature Teeter Dance (which confuses everyone in the room, including its user if it's ever used by something that doesn't have Own Tempo). It also gets Focus Punch, Water Pulse, Dig, Shadow Ball and Shock Wave via TMs. Its Ability combination is somewhat unfortunate, as that leaves Tangled Feet only with cross-eyed status to trigger. Its exclusive item increases chances of enemies dropping Treasure Boxes.
  • Croagunk: F IQ group. Another Wigglytuff Guild member. Has Astonish, Mud-Slap and Mud Bomb, Pursuit, Swagger and Flatter, Sucker Punch and eventually even Sludge Bomb via level-up. Its only Fighting-type move via level is Revenge, which in this game works like Bide, so it doesn't get STAB; it does get Focus Punch, Focus Blast and Brick Break via TMs at least, as well as Dig, X-Scissor, Shadow Ball and Dark Pulse. Its exclusive items make Treasure Boxes drop more often and convert Psychic-type damage into heaing.
  • Lucario: Evolved form of Riolu. Loses access to Screech, Copycat and Reversal upon evolution, replacing them with Metal Sound, Me First and Bone Rush, and evolving Riolu does require a bit of effort, having to increase IQ and then also getting the somewhat rare Sun Ribbon. Bone Rush is a multihit move while Me First in this game simply uses enemy's move at random, so it's simply a sidegrade if you use Lucario directly, especially thanks to all its new moves: Dark Pulse, Metal Claw, Swords Dance, Aura Sphere (projectile that never misses!), and ExtremeSpeed via levels, plus Water Pulse and Shadow Ball via TMs.

Anime Special

There's one special mission that in Time/Darkness would never naturally generate and required getting a special Wonder Mail either from Chunsoft's website or the DVD pocket of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness, involving getting Gabite Scale from Labyrinth Cave. In Sky it can naturally generate in Spinda's Café once you have defeated a Togetic, which are found in Happy Outlook as seen above, but also Zero Isle East; both are post-game dungeons. Accepting this job unlocks the dungeon.

Strictly speaking, this isn't a post-game dungeon, as inputting a Wonder Mail password will let you access it as early as Chapter 10. As such, the available items and levels of Pokémon aside from the boss reflect this, though notably, there is an unusually high amount of Reviver Seeds in this dungeon, making it a good place to farm them. There's no traps or Hidden Stairs to be found here, but Monsters House can still spawn.

Additionally, true to its name, Labyrinth Cave tends to have large floors with high amount of rooms; in fact, it is the most complex dungeon that can be accessed before credits roll and one of the most complex in the entire game.

Pokémon encountered

Pokémon Floors Levels Recruit Rate
Nidorina (Pokémon) Nidorina B1-B9 5-6 0.5%
Nidorino (Pokémon) Nidorino B1-B9 5-6 0.5%
Golbat (Pokémon) Golbat B1-B9 8-9 -4.5%
Machop (Pokémon) Machop B1-B9 6-7 8.2%
Gabite (Pokémon) Gabite B10 33 Unrecruitable Boss
  • Nidorina/Nidorino/Machop: These were encountered at Mt. Bristle (though Machop also shows at Final Maze).
  • Golbat: D IQ group. The evolved form of the final member of Team Skull. Since it's at a super low level, it will always know Screech, Leech Life, Supersonic and Astonish; your level advantage shouldn't make it much of a threat, but it can still be kinda annoying. It does learn Confuse Ray, Poison Fang, and Haze at higher levels, among other things. It can also be taught Sludge Bomb and Shadow Ball via TMs. Its exclusive items increase Evasion in the rare Cloudy weather, make HP-draining moves work at 100% efficiency and convert Rock-type damage into healing.

Gabite is guaranteed to know Dragon Claw. The other three known moves will vary between the following: Tackle, Sand-Attack, Dragon Rage, Sandstorm, Take Down, Sand Tomb and Slash.

Gabite is a very simple fight for post-game, although it could possibly summon Sandstorm to have Sand Veil activate and make it harder to hit, especially if it has Sand-Attack. If you were to enter this dungeon at an earlier point in the game, its STAB moves and/or Dragon Rage's guaranteed 30HP could prove to be a bit risky. Unusually, entering the boss floor in this dungeon will not restore the team's HP, PP and Belly.
