The term grounded is at term used to describe a Pokémon that can be affected by damaging Ground-type moves and several other associated effects.

Gravity has had an affect on the Pokémon games since 1 however, over the course of the series moves and items have been introduced that allow the player to alter it's effects both in and out of battle. By default, all {t|Flying}} Pokémon and those with the Ability Levitate are not grounded, with the remainder Pokémon considered grounded.

Effects of being ungrounded

Altering a Pokémon's gravity

Moves

There are currently four moves that affect the gravity of a Pokémon during a battle.

Gravity: All Pokémon on the field to be affected by intense gravity for five turns, ignoring any types or items they may cause them to be in the air. This removes their immunity to gGround moves as well as disables a number of moves to be used.
Smack Down: Any adjacent Pokémon can be grounded until they are swapped out. It also hits Pokémon during the semi invulnerable phase of Fly, Bounce, and Sky Drop. but it doesn't ground them.
Thousand Arrows: Works similarly to Smack Down.
Magnet Rise: The Pokémon is levitated for five turns.
Telekinesis:Levitates the target Pokémon for three turns, and makes all non-one-hit knockout moves have 100% accuracy.
Ingrain: Grounds the user while recovering HP
Roost: Grounds any otherwise immune Pokémon for one turn

Items

There are two items that affect a Pokémon's gravity, Air Balloon causes a Pokémon to float and an Iron Ball that keeps them grounded.

Moves that fail under intense gravity

Bounce, Fly, Splash, Jump Kick, Hi Jump Kick, Magnet Rise, Telekinesis, Sky Drop and Flying Press. If a Pokémon is in the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly or Bounce when Gravity is used, that move is canceled immediately.

Also, if a grounded Poison-type Pokémon is sent out while Toxic Spikes are on that Pokémon's side of the field, it will remove them; if the Poison-type Pokémon is ungrounded, the Toxic Spikes will remain.
