Mewtwo (M01)

A Mewtwo had a prominent role during the original series, appearing in Mewtwo Strikes Back, its remake Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, and its sequel special Mewtwo Returns.

Origin

Young Mewtwo crying as Ambertwo dies

Approximately twenty years ago, Team Rocket discovered that a Mew was living in Guyana. Many years later, under the orders of the new boss Giovanni, an expedition team of Team Rocket scientists traveled to the area to search for a fossil of Mew, and succeeded in finding an eyelash belonging to it. Giovanni hired Dr. Fuji to clone Mew for him and create the most powerful Pokémon in existence. Fuji agreed, but only in order to continue his research into cloning his deceased daughter, Amber. Because the cloning process requires a strong life force, all four other clones died.

In the coming years, this Mewtwo would escape both it's captivity under Dr. Fuji and subsequently Giovanni, realizing that it was just an experiment of mankind. It's distaste of human greed led Mewtwo to issue a challenge to several strong Pokémon Trainers, including Ash Ketchum. Upon revealing itself, Mewtwo challenged the Trainers with its clone Pokémon—Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard—to prove its superiority. However, before Mewtwo could defeat the Trainers and move out into the world, Mew appeared. Mew and Mewtwo fought at length, ceasing only when Ash—exasperated over the drawn-out and fruitless battling—ran into the fray and was caught in their crossfire, which turned his body to stone. After Ash was revived by the tears of the nearby Pokémon, clone and original alike, Mewtwo experienced a change of heart and no longer sought to conquer the world. Mewtwo reasoned that it would be best if no one remembered the events that had transpired, so it erased the memories of all the people and Pokémon and transported everyone but Team Rocket back to the mainland. Mewtwo and Mew left New Island with the cloned Pokémon to seek a proper place for themselves.

Johto

Soon afterwards, Mewtwo and the clones migrated to Johto and eventually settled on Mount Quena. To prevent them from having any encounters with humans, Mewtwo frequently used severe storms to make the mountain inaccessible. After a few years, Giovanni found Mewtwo's hiding place using one of Team Rocket's satellites and began a plan to capture it once again. Mewtwo again met with Ash, who did not remember their previous encounter, but Ash and his friends helped it to escape and defeat Giovanni. At the end of the ordeal, Mewtwo erased Giovanni and his soldiers' memories and decided to move throughout the world, searching for the meaning of its life.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

Since its departure from Mount Quena, Mewtwo began protecting several Pokémon that had been abused by humans. They eventually settled on the isolated Cero Island to live in peace.

In Getting More Than You Battled For!, Ash and Goh traveled to Cero Island after Professor Cerise detected an energy signature similar to that of Mew coming from that location. After wandering around the island's wilderness for some time, Ash and Goh fell over a waterfall but were seemingly saved by Mewtwo, who rendered them unconscious and teleported them to a giant tree somewhere on the island. They encountered the Pokémon in Mewtwo's protection shortly before Mewtwo itself appeared and confronted them. Ash, recalling their previous encounter, recognized it, while Mewtwo did not indicate whether it remembered Ash or not. Mewtwo demanded to know why they had come to the sanctuary, leading Goh to reveal his search for Mew. In response, Mewtwo questioned how capturing all of the Pokémon in the world would lead Goh to Mew. Goh explained his belief that capturing Pokémon helps to understand them, and that capturing all Pokémon would thus help him understand Mew since it has the genes of all Pokémon species. Recognizing that Mewtwo was a Pokémon itself, he challenged it with the intent of capturing it. Mewtwo warned them that it was created to be the strongest Pokémon in the world, which motivated Ash to challenge it as well, in order to push himself further down the road to becoming a Pokémon Master. Smiling at their dedication to their dreams, Mewtwo consented to a battle. Despite Ash and Goh's best efforts, Mewtwo easily defeated Pikachu, Cinderace, and Lucario.

After the battle, Mewtwo asked Ash and Goh if they would still pursue their dreams, even though there would be many challenges ahead. In response, they affirmed their dedication to their goals, saying they could rely on their friends. Encouraged by this, Mewtwo revealed its role in protecting the abused Pokémon. Deciding to leave Cero Island with the Pokémon under its protection, Mewtwo parted with Ash and Goh, bidding them farewell with the promise that their journeys had only just begun before teleporting them back to the Cerise Laboratory, allowing them to retain their memories of the encounter.

In the epilogue to Mewtwo Returns and in some openings and movie previews, Mewtwo has been seen wearing a plain brown cape and moving across rooftops at night.

It also appeared in some main series episodes, debuting in The Battle Of The Badge. Since the original series, it made further appearances in openings and a few stock appearances in movies.

Mewtwo briefly appeared alongside its friends in This Could be the Start of Something Big!, flying off in the background as Ash and Goh rode on Lugia.

Mewtwo (M16)

Mewtwo soon after its creation

A female Mewtwo capable of Mega Evolving into Mega Mewtwo Y had prominent roles in Genesect and the Legend Awakened and its prologue Mewtwo — Prologue to Awakening. Also, unlike the noticeably masculine-sounding voice of the original Mewtwo, this Mewtwo possesses a feminine voice.

Origin
Mewtwo's escape from its creators

Mewtwo was created by a group of scientists as result of an experiment of recombining Mew's genes. After being subjected to a series of painful experiments, it soon destroyed the laboratory where it had been created, and fled. Feeling alone in the entire world, Mewtwo rejected everything around it. Though it shares some aspects of its personality with the previous Mewtwo (M01), this Mewtwo differs in a number of key ways. It is far less harsh in its hatred of humans, instead merely distrusting them and wishing to be left alone by them.

Mewtwo — Prologue to Awakening

Mewtwo was ambushed by a Pokémon hunter called Dirk, who had been hired to recapture Mewtwo. Mewtwo managed to escape Dirk's initial attack, but was badly wounded in the process, so it retreated into a cave to recover in secret. However, as one of Dirk's Tyranitar's Hyper Beams accidentally hit some of the drones, they malfunctioned and sparked, starting a forest fire. Dirk sent his remaining drones after Mewtwo, but it managed to break free from them, and then change into Mega Mewtwo Y, Mewtwo's Mega Evolution form, easily defeating the remaining drones with its incredible speed. Using its Psychic powers, it lifted a large pool of water from a nearby lake to make it rain over the forest, putting out the fire. Afterwards, Mewtwo was caught in a fierce thunderstorm. Having not recovered completely, it sought shelter in a cave, where several other wild Pokémon were also taking cover from the rain. The other Pokémon initially seemed cautious towards it, but as a lightning bolt struck and caused Mewtwo to fall over and pass out, the Pokémon saw its need for help, and used their health-restoring moves on it, allowing it to recover faster, as well as using a Fire attack and cuddling Mewtwo for warmth. Seeing this, Mewtwo realized that it wasn't alone in the world after all, and started considering all the wild Pokémon as its friends, although it still kept its cold attitude towards humans.

Genesect and the Legend Awakened

The movie opens with Mewtwo having a flying race with several bird Pokémon, going on to challenge its own powers by Mega Evolving and speeding as high as it could go, until it reached the edge of space. Feeling that it could not stay at this hostile environment, it let itself fall down, until it heard a telepathic voice, asking to get back home. It went towards the source of the voice, and found the Genesect Army at a snowy mountain area. An avalanche started and threatened the group of Paleozoic Pokémon. Changing into its Mega Evolution, Mewtwo was able to save all of them but the Red Genesect. Realizing that it had heard the voice of the Douse Drive Genesect, Mewtwo read its mind, discovering that they were Pokémon who, like it, were created by humans. The Red Genesect reappeared, having survived the avalanche, and attacked Mewtwo, who explained that the world had thoroughly changed since they had last been alive, and asked them to come with it. Not trusting Mewtwo, the Red Genesect forced its companions to attack Mewtwo, fending it off before leaving.

Mewtwo followed the Genesect Army to New Tork City, which they had thought to be a good replacement for their past home, its tall buildings resembling the stone pillars around their ancient habitat. The Red Genesect had found the Douse Drive Genesect making friends with Ash and his friends, but felt them as threats, and had it attack its new friends. Thankfully Mega Mewtwo Y was able to block the attack, saving Ash and his friends as the Genesect fled. Mewtwo asked them if they were alright, but ignored Ash, Iris, and Cilan's gratitude, saying that it was only trying to save Pikachu and Axew. Ash pleaded to know more about Genesect, so Mewtwo explained how they were Pokémon created by humans, having been restored from 300-million-years-old Fossils, and then having weaponized armors attached to their bodies. As they were now in a completely different world than they used to live in, everything around them seemed alien to them, and they treated everyone around them as their enemies. Mewtwo explained how it knew how they felt, for it was also created by humans and then told Ash and his friends to forget ever seeing it, and flew away, knocking over eavesdropping Team Rocket in the process.

Mega Mewtwo Y

After several skirmishes, Mewtwo and the Red Genesect prepared for a final faceoff, Ash stepped between the two, saying that this place was not the Genesect's home. When Mewtwo told Ash to "move away from there", he told how he had made a promise to the Douse Drive Genesect to find it a home, saying that every Pokémon belong somewhere. All the Pokémon, including the four purple Genesect, seemed to understand Ash's point, but the Red Genesect showed that it still refused to understand, attacking the group with Techno Blast. Mewtwo Mega Evolved and easily stopped the attack. Then, realizing that it had only one choice to make—to go where there is no one else—it took the Red Genesect, and sped up to the edge of space with it, showing it the entire planet. Mewtwo explained that everyone created to this world has a purpose, and that everyone in the world were each other's friends, even them. Seeing the Red Genesect's anger finally disappearing, Mewtwo decided that it was time for them to return home. However, the stress of the lift had been too much for them, causing Mewtwo and the Red Genesect to pass out during the fall. Thankfully, Ash was able to come up with an idea of several Psychic- and Water-type Pokémon forming a giant ball of water to soften their landing. Afterwards, when the Genesect had been brought to Absentia Natural Park where they could live in peace, Mewtwo thanked Ash and his friends for finding the Genesect a home. It agreed to Ash's statement of them being friends forever, saying that it would trust in his words forevermore. After this, it changed into its Mega Evolution once more, and flew away.

Mewtwo was last seen arriving in a large city at night and landing on top of a tall building.

Mewtwo's backstory as depicted in Pokémon Origins

In File 4: Charizard, Red learns of Mewtwo after finding out Blue was injured by it. After some time alone to think, Red remembers reading journal entries in the Pokémon Mansion on Cinnabar Island, alluding to a Pokémon that was too strong to control. After informing Professor Oak about his discovery, he finds out that Dr. Fuji was responsible for Mewtwo's creation, and vows to capture it in order to complete his Pokédex.

Upon Red's entrance to its chamber in Cerulean Cave, Mewtwo lets out an animalistic roar and immediately begins its attack. Red is shocked that a Legendary Pokémon such as Articuno was unable to deal any damage following a quick recovery, which results in the fight coming down to his final Pokémon, Charizard. The Flame Pokémon is no match for its strong psychic defenses, where it is soon knocked underwater by Mewtwo's assault. Following the subsequent Mega Evolution of Charizard into Mega Charizard X, Mewtwo appears shocked at the newfound power, after being forced to block a Fire Blast with just it's bare hands. Mewtwo is once again caught by surprise with an Ultra Ball thrown by Red almost immediately thereafter, but manages to escape with little effort.

In spite of Mewtwo's fierce speed, Charizard retaliates with it's own Swift attack, which catches up to Mewtwo and weakens him further. Although it appears adept at dodging Charizard's various slashes it soon becomes overwhelmed, being hit by a Mega Punch and knocked into a rock. Massively weakened, Mewtwo accepts its fate as Red throws yet another Ultra Ball, which results in Mewtwo's capture.

201 Spoilers end here. 201

The theme that plays during Red's initial battle with Mewtwo is an arrangement of Battle! Wild Pokémon from Pokémon Red & Green.

Pokémon Evolutions

A Mewtwo appeared as the focus of The Discovery, where Green and Trace race to try and catch it, only to discover that Elaine had done so minutes beforehand. Green immediately initiates a battle with Elaine, where she fights the newly captured Mewtwo as her final opponent. Despite Mega Evolving her Mega Blastoise specifically to challenge only it, her partner's water-type attacks are easily shrugged off with a barrier. Mewtwo proceeds to counterattack by lifting Blastoise into the air, then propels it against a rock using it's psychic powers, which is enough to have it revert from it's Mega Evolution. It is then no match for Mewtwo's Psystrike attack, which instantly knocks out Blastoise, resulting in Green's defeat. After Green offers Elaine both of Mewtwo's Mega Stones, she jokes that Elaine and Mewtwo should both become her Pokémon, both of whom appear to be equally confused.

Mewtwo appeared in the music video for Celestial. It battled Mew in an animated sequence, with Ed Sheeran and his Pokémon in the crossfire trying to stop them. The location (and battle itself) is an obvious reference to the battle at New Island in Mewtwo Strikes Back.

A Mewtwo appeared in GOTCHA!, seen launching an attack against Serena and Greninja, presumably in the Unknown Dungeon.

Design

Additional Settei drawn by Sayuri Ichiishi
Mewtwo's X & Y Settei

Mewtwo was adapted for the anime by the series' character designer. As can be seen in it's Settei, Mewtwo is often portrayed as being significantly taller than in the games from this time period, despite being based off comparatively smaller artwork by Ken Sugimori. Special attention seems to have been taken to Mewtwo's hands and feet in particular, as they get an entire sheet almost entirely dedicated to them from a variety of angles. In spite of being designed for use by a Mewtwo with a rather different personality in M16 when compared to M01, the settei for Mewtwo in X & Y is largely similar to the original series. Some revisions to the sheet include completely redrawn legs and feet with heels lower to the ground, eyebrows that no longer protrude outward from the head, and a more lax pose for the right-most drawing.

A revised model for Mewtwo would make an appearance in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which appears to bring a variety of these design traits back, with especially revised proportions. It's possible that Ichiishi's design for the anime was an influence for this change.

For all of it's major appearances in the anime, Mewtwo has been known to communicate with humans through telekinesis, a trait that is absent in the core-series games, opting to occasionally respond with "Mew!" when interacted with. This is reflected in animated adaptations of that material such as Pokémon Origins and Pokémon Evolutions, where it makes little noise or only communicates in animalistic grunts and roars. Another major difference its that its eyes often glow when using psychic attacks in the anime, whereas in the games this does not occur, even in it's 3D incarnations from Pokémon X and Y onward. Physical attacks from Mewtwo in the anime occasionally involve a colored psychic barrier, used most prominently in it's clashes with Mew in M01. In this initial debut appearance, Mewtwo employs the use of Shadow Ball, which predated the move's appearance in Pokémon Gold and Silver by 16 months. Mewtwo can only learn Shadow Ball by TM in the final games.
