Regular attack
- If you were looking for the similar concept from Pokémon UNITE, see Basic attack.
A regular attack (Japanese: 通常攻撃 regular attack), or simply an attack (Japanese: 攻撃 attack), is a damage-dealing typeless attack in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series.
It is usable by all Pokémon in addition to the four moves it can have. The regular attack is not a move, so it cannot be part of a linked move.
Effect
The regular attack deals damage and does not expend PP when used.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team, the regular attack's damage is calculated as a Physical Attack, using the user's Attack and the target's Defense stats. It has a base power of 1 and a base accuracy of 93%. It has a base critical hit rate of 0%, meaning that critical hits will only occur if there's an outside boost, such as Focus Energy or a Scope Lens. It also has a maximum PP value of 17 stored in the game data, but this goes unused in regular gameplay.
If the player's team (including the Leader and/or any Partner Pokémon) defeats an enemy Pokémon by using only regular attacks, the experience gained is half of the base value (rounded down). If at least one move was successfully used against the foe, or if the foe successfully used a move that targets itself or other enemy Pokémon, the experience gain is the full base value. However, if only linked moves are used, the experience gain is 1.5× the base value.
This applies to the regular attack (as well as any Physical Attack move) if the target has any of these status conditions:
- Reflect halves the damage dealt to the target.
- Counter causes the damage received to be fully dealt to the user as well.
- Mini Counter causes ¼ of the damage received to be dealt to the user as well.
- Vital Throw causes the user to be thrown away, except if the target faints from the attack.
If the target has the Ability Wonder Guard, the damage taken by the regular attack is reduced to 1.
If the user has the status condition Set Damage (caused by Doom Desire or Future Sight), the regular attack (or any damaging move) deals 35 damage, regardless of other multipliers, even if the target has Wonder Guard.
If the target is frozen, it cannot be damaged by regular attacks (as well as being immune against most forms of damage).
If certain IQ skills are currently active, the regular attack is affected:
- Sure-Hit Attacker causes the regular attack to never miss.
- Exclusive Move-User, when active on a Partner Pokémon, causes it never to use the regular attack.
Mirror Coat and Mirror Move do not reflect the regular attack. Technician does not increase the damage of the regular attack. The regular attack cannot be called by Metronome or Sleep Talk and cannot be copied by Mimic or Sketch.
If the user has the status condition Encore, it is still freely able to use regular attacks nonetheless (even though it can use no moves other than the last used move). Encore is not capable of forcing the affected Pokémon to repeat the regular attack.
The regular attack is unable to gain or lose PP, being unaffected by the Max Elixir or by status conditions such as Grudge and Spite.
Regular attacks can reveal traps.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky, the game mechanics from the previous games still apply unless otherwise stated.
If the user has the status condition Set Damage, the damage dealt is now 30 (unlike the 35 damage in previous games).
If the target has the status condition Metal Burst, half the damage received from the regular attack (or from any damaging move) is dealt to the surrounding enemies.
If the user has the Ability Normalize, the regular attack changes into Normal-type instead of typeless.
If the user has any of these Abilities, it is activated upon using a regular attack (using a move does not count):
- Anticipation shows if the target has one or more moves that are super effective against the user.
- Frisk identifies the target's held item (if any).
There is another IQ skill that affects regular attacks, in addition to the other IQ skills introduced in the previous games:
- Quick Striker causes the user to strike the regular attack twice per turn.
The regular attack cannot be called by Me First.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (WiiWare)
The regular attack in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (WiiWare) functions similarly to how it did in Explorers.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, this move deals 5 HP damage regardless of stats, though exceptionally durable Pokémon can still negate the damage. The attack is affected by Rivalry, to a limited extent. Partner and enemy Pokémon will generally refrain from using regular attacks unless they are unable to use damaging moves.
EXP is no longer affected by regular attacks.
When facing a teammate, the attack button will cause the leader to pose, consuming a turn.
Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon
The regular attack in Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon functions similarly to how it did in Gates to Infinity. Attacks deal at least 1 damage, and regular attacks have no effect against Wonder Guard.
If the user has Mega Evolved, the 5 HP damage limit is not applied. Its regular attack will get a huge boost in power and range, destroy walls, and reveal purple sparkling spots on the floor which can be picked up for an item.
The Whirlwind emera causes the regular attack to send an enemy flying, similar to the Whirlwind move.
When facing a teammate, they will pose instead of the leader, and will not consume a turn. The targeted Pokémon also has a chance to give dialogue, similar to the Explorers games, with a default quote and a different quote when below 50% HP.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, the regular attack button will select a move known by the leader when fighting an enemy, or Struggle if all moves are turned off and/or out of PP. Attacking while no enemies are nearby or while holding R will perform a spin animation and check for traps one tile around the leader, though this does not deal damage.
The regular attack can still be used by other Pokémon that are unable to use a damaging move, and is no longer capped at 5 damage.
