Draft:Evolution (GO)

This is how Evolution works in Pokémon GO.
List of Pokémon by evolutionary line

Methods of Evolution
In this game, the only way to evolve Pokémon is to press the "Evolve" button on that Pokémon's profile page.
All Pokémon require the player spend a specific amount of their own Candy to evolve them, but some have additional requirements. The Candy cost for Evolution varies between Pokémon species, ranging from 12 (to evolve Caterpie into Metapod) to 400 (to evolve Magikarp into Gyarados or Meltan into Melmetal).
Branched Evolutions
For some species of Pokémon with branched Evolutions, there are multiple "Evolve" buttons, allowing the player to choose which Pokémon to evolve into. The different buttons may have different requirements, such as one button requiring an item while another does not.
Despite having branched Evolutions, Eevee, Tyrogue, Wurmple, and Clamperl only have a single button. Some of them have no indication of which Pokémon it will evolve into in most cases.
For some Pokémon with branched Evolutions, the one it will evolve into is determined at random. These include:
- Eevee → Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon
- Tyrogue → Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, or Hitmontop (determined at random if there is a tie between IVs)
- Wurmple → Silcoon or Cascoon
- Clamperl → Huntail or Gorebyss
- Cherubi → Overcast Form or Sunshine Form Cherrim
Eeveelutions
- Main article: Eeveelution
Eevee evolves at random into Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon if it does not meet any other Evolution requirements.
If the player walks 10 km with Eevee as their Buddy Pokémon, the player can spend 25 Candy to evolve it into Espeon during Day Mode or Umbreon during Night Mode. If the player switches the Buddy Pokémon before evolving Eevee, they will need to start the process all over again.
If the player is in range of a Mossy Lure Module or Glacial Lure Module, Eevee will evolve into Glaceon or Leafeon, respectively.
If Eevee has a particular nickname, then, once per nickname, it is guaranteed to evolve into the following, regardless of other conditions:
- Rainer → Vaporeon
- Sparky → Jolteon
- Pyro → Flareon
- Sakura → Espeon
- Tamao → Umbreon
- Linnea → Leafeon
- Rea → Glaceon
- Kira → Sylveon
Once the player has evolved an Eevee using one of these nicknames, that nickname will no longer have any impact on Eevee's Evolution.
Tyrogue line
Tyrogue evolves into Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, or Hitmontop if its highest IV is for Attack, Defense, or HP, respectively. If there is a tie, the tie is broken randomly.
Items
In addition to Candy, some Pokémon also require an item:
Some Evolutions require an item in addition to the Candy cost. All Evolutions that require an Evolution item other than an Evolution stone (except Feebas and Clamperl) or Sun Stone to evolve in the core series require an item to be spent in Pokémon GO.
Sun Stone
- For Evolutions introduced in Generation II and V that require a Sun Stone, this item is also required in Pokémon GO.
Dragon Scale,
King's Rock,
Metal Coat,
Upgrade
- For Evolutions introduced in Generation II, the item required is the same as in the core series.
Sinnoh Stone
- All cross-generational Evolutions introduced in Generation IV, except location-based Evolutions, require a Sinnoh Stone.
Unova Stone
- All Evolutions introduced in Generation V that require an Evolution stone in the core series (except a Sun Stone) require an Unova Stone.
For evolutionary lines introduced prior to Generation V, other Evolution stones (including the Ice Stone) are not required in Pokémon GO.
The Unova Stone is required for all Unova-based Evolutions that require some Evolution stone, except for Cottonee and Petilil, which require a Sun Stone instead. Helioptile also requires a Sun Stone to evolve, currently being the only Generation VI Pokémon to require an Evolution item in Pokémon GO.
Buddy Pokémon
Certain Pokémon can evolve by using certain methods as their Buddy Pokémon, such as Primeape evolving into Annihilape after defeating 30 Ghost-type and/or Psychic-type Pokémon. In some cases, the player must walk with the Buddy Pokémon for a certain distance.
In Eevee's case, its nickname or a nearby Mossy or Glacial Lure Module take precedence over the Buddy Pokémon method.

Gender
- Main article: Gender-based Evolution
Some Evolution paths are only possible if the Pokémon is of a specific gender. These requirements are the same in Pokémon GO as they are in the core series.
Lure Module
Some Pokémon require players to be in range of a special type of Lure Module to evolve. These include:
Weather
- Main article: Weather (GO)
Sliggoo can only evolve into Goodra when it's raining (unless a Rainy Lure Module is present)
Time
- Main article: Time-based Evolution
Some Pokémon can only evolve, or evolve into different Pokémon or forms depending on time, depending on whether it is day or night. Ursaring can only evolve into Ursaluna during a full moon.
Candy
- Main article: Candy (GO)
With the exception of Gimmighoul, Candy is required for Pokémon to evolve. The cost in Candy to evolve a Pokémon is typically based on its number of Evolution stages, but with some exceptions:
- Two-stage lines usually require
50.
- Three-stage lines require
25 for the first Evolution and
100 for the second.
- Baby Pokémon require
25 to evolve for the first Evolution and
50 for the second, if any.
- Marill only requires
25 to evolve. - All two-stage Baby Pokémon introduced in Generation IV require
50 to evolve.
- Marill only requires
Candy and Evolution items
Generation II Evolutions which require a Sun Stone or Evolution item in the core series games also require that same item in Pokémon GO (in addition to Candy). Most Pokémon with cross-generational Evolutions introduced in Generation IV require a Sinnoh Stone and
100 to evolve.
In past updates, two-stage Pokémon that cost
50 to evolve have their cost reduced to
25 whenever a cross-generational third-stage is added, such as Zubat and Duskull. Snorunt's Evolution cost was increased when Froslass became available: due to it requiring a Sinnoh Stone to evolve into Froslass (and all Sinnoh Stone Evolutions cost
100), the cost to evolve into Glalie was increased to match.
Trade Evolutions
- Main article: Trade (GO) → Trade Evolution
From January 10, 2020 onward, certain Pokémon do not cost any Candy to evolve if they are traded. This applies to these Pokémon, which Pokémon evolve by trade Evolutions in the core series: Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, Haunter, Boldore, Gurdurr, Karrablast, Shelmet, Pumpkaboo, and Phantump.
Pokémon introduced in Generation V or VI that are eligible for this cost reduction require
50 to evolve into the middle stage, if any, and
200 to evolve into the final stage, if not traded.
Purified Pokémon
- Main article: Shadow Pokémon (GO)
Purified Pokémon require 10% less Candy to evolve, with costs rounded down. For instance, a Purified Rattata, which would normally cost
25 to evolve, would instead only require
22.
